Congrats to all of those with acceptances!

I hate to put a damper on things amidst all this good news, but I was deferred.. Seems like all I've been hearing about are acceptances. I was wondering if there were more people in my situation and if anyone knew of any stats on deferrals/rejections?

I've gone through all of last year's forum and it doesn't seem too bad at this point. Regardless, it's still quite disheartening. THIS WAIT WILL KILL ME!

I'm sorry you have to wait, but I'm sure you'll get good news in a few months! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! 🙂

EDIT: I feel like there are a lot of people who had October interviews who never told us the results. Did you guys all get good news?

hey guys!! My BRE came to my parents house in Tulsa yesterday and words cannot express my excitement! I also was accepted by the School of Community Medicine, and I am pretty sure I am leaning in that direction. Any words of wisdom?

Also, when will you all start thinking about the housing situation?

OU has a cutoff for rolling admissions so I would keep your hopes up especially because as a november interviewee, you will have better statistics than the january and february people.

The wait is tough however you could ask Dotty if the committee will take a update letter. I would give some advice in that as a deferred applicant they will ask you to submit your transcript with updated grades. So don't let your grades slip as you wait anxiously.

Is there anything that the interviewers pointed out critically in your interview. If its like correctable like maybe lack of shadowing I might shadow a doctor in Dec Jan and submit an update letter to show improvement if that is allowed.

But in general keep in mind that ou does have a cutoff of admissions rolling. at a certain number they have to stop and defer. before last year that cutoff usually happened in january with 140 I think. But to give more of a fair shot to jan and feb interviewees I think from what I've read in other posts they lowered it to closer to 120. meaning that well qualified november interviewees will be deferred but still have a comparatively good chance of acceptance compared to january and february interviews.

is anyone taking any classes next semester in prep for medical school maybe an evening class or something? I'll actually be a year out from school and I feel like I've forgotten everything if I took the mcat now I'd guess a 26 as my score.

additionally, anyone know how to change the member name. I should've thought of a better name than medapplicant how original.

You could take histology with me 😀 Everybody says its a good one to have under your belt before you get to med school. (i'm gonna finish my zoo minor up with it) Though it's not in the evening unfortunately...

Congrats to those accepted. Getting deferred this early stinks because it's a long wait but realize that since you interviewed in November, you will most likely have better stats and a higher chance of getting accepted off the deferred list than those put on in January and February.

is that at OU? and are there any spots still open? I don't know if my job would allow it but histology was one of those classes I wanted to take for a while.

I do not think at his point any one class is going to be worth taking to prepare for school. The first system is genetics and pretty easy biochem type stuff, but very doable without much prior knowledge. The second system is a bunch of stuff no one undergraduate class can prepare you for, maybe immunology, but again, not worth taking a class. And the third system, which we are in now, is anatomy. An anatomy class could help, people who have taken it seem to be better equipped to handle our hyper anatomy class, but you will do fine either way. Just one can probably offer a better opinion about having anatomy before you begin.

Somebody below said something about having histology before school starts. It has not been necessary to know up to this point in the new curriculum, but that is not to say it will not be important in the coming systems. Either way, I wouldn't waste money taking it before.

Have fun, relax, and if you want to do something, start watching hours of recorded lectures on hippocrates when you get your OUHSC login. 😀

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Relax and enjoy your last few months of freedom. 🙂

Congrats on the acceptance. I think you will simply have to start a new account if you want to shed your name.

Don't worry about being a year or more out of school, you will find your routine quickly. I took a year off and had no troubles getting readjusted. Things from undergrad classes will come back to you quickly. I will agree with everyone else, no need to take another class. Enjoy your evenings next semester - watch tv, read (not pre-studying for school!), take a cooking class, go out, play sports - live!

I'm taking an Immunology class but only because it's required for my major.

Otherwise, I would be taking more classes like Wine Tasting (which I'm currently enrolled in 😀).

Firstly, congrats on getting in. Congrats to everyone that has been accepted, and congrats to those who have been deferred, as you still have a great chance of getting in down the road.

To be honest the best preparation for medical school, and I know I'm repeating what others have said, is to relax and enjoy the time left before you start. For me personally, now into our third system, Genetics and Anatomy have helped me out the most from undergrad. I know that others in our class have mentioned that Biochem has been helpful as well. All in all though, if you have a basic, and I really do mean basic understanding of biology and chemistry, you have what it takes to do just fine in med school.

Finish out your degrees, and if you have the opportunity to take an anatomy class, genetics, or cell biology then go for it. Seriously, do not work too hard trying to prepare yourself for school, because once it starts it does not slow down.

Congratulations again, and if you all have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Got accepted 🙂

They sent it to my current address and not my permanent one.

Now that I know I'm accepted I'm starting to think about living situations for next year. Does anyone know what area most people live in? Also, would anyone be interested in sharing an apartment to save on costs? I'm a female by the way.

New condo's have just been built downtown. My parents might buy a few of them. I can let you know if they do.

I was thinking about getting a roommate as well. My parents were looking at houses in the 45th and Western area. Its like a 5-10 min drive downtown and its in a really safe area. I also looked at the campus housing. I'm not sure what to do.

I've been planning to live somewhere just north of downtown. There's some really nice areas and some are not ultra expensive.

Is anyone planning on staying in Edmond? I live north of Sorghrum.

Also HW51 Revisited? you mentioned an email account? can we get an account from IT?

Also did anyone choose the Tulsa track?

Also is an iPad a useful tool? they have that ad where they show the uses for the iPad.

Just some random thoughts that have come to me.

I went to Barnes and Noble felt like buying the entire shelf of medical references and books. Unfortunately I opened up my wallet to find five bucks ended up just reading some of the books.

Also did anyone watch the game yesterday. Wow all I can say. If we had played like that defensively all year maybe they'd be going to the national title game. instead it looks like connecticut which shouldn't even be there. I'd rather watch us against 1 loss boise state.

it looks like we'll be playing connecticut (not connecticut for the national title game)

Yes, they send you an email with a secure link to an account for OUHSC but I never got mine working. I need to call IT in the morning and get that sorted out.

I opted for the school of community medicine track. The financial incentives are just amazing and I am originally from Tulsa.

If only we had Nebraska's kicker. He is amazing. Good game though.

I'm a huge thunder fan so would you believe I chose the OKC track just so I could watch Durant and Westbrook for four years rather than just two.

anyone interested in sports medicine. Pretty cool to travel with a team during the regular season and take care of nba players.

Also I saw this book in Barnes and noble, a lady doctor who talked about serving three presidents. working for the white house.

Or joining the world health organization.

I also saw this group of doctors on CNN and they solved medical mysteries like conditions that have never been known to medicine Gupta did some reporting on that story.

I've been pretty critical of the OU kicker myself. But he's also won some games. that Nebraska kicker was amazing. he's also the punter. we have a good punter but he was amazing. A lot of resilience for OU. I thought it was over down 17.

I toured the on-campus housing not long ago and filled out an application while I was there. It's not all that expensive, and the fact that you can walk to the basic science building and library convinced me it was a good option

what's it per month?

what's it per month?

Studio apartments are $543 per month.

2 Person apartments are $842 per month ($421 individually).

Everything is including in rent except electricity.

I hear the Lincoln Apartments are also popular in the area for medical students, but I have not looked into that.

That's not bad monthly rate. Most likely i'll commute from Edmond. Hopefully my antique car can handle four years of daily commutes.

At worst I can sleep in the modules right?

I live in edmond on the south end and can get right on the highway so it only takes me ten to fifteen minutes to get to school

Do people like the Village? I would love to be able to walk to class.

Psh. I know what time you leave to get there, though. 😀

When I leave at 4am there's no traffic. 5am still no traffic. 6am not bad. 7 am adds about 10-15 minutes. Oddly enough if I leave my house at 7:20 I'm parking at school about 7:40 and seems smoother than leaving at 7.

Do you take 235?

I was almost late heading to my interview. I can kind of joke about it now but I was panicked at 7:50 and it looked like walking to OUHSC would've gotten me there faster

Seems like heading to the big things like MCAT testing etc. I've always hit some sort of traffic.

also just one did you take an anatomy class before going to med school and did that help you?

I jump on broadway ext from Kelly, as long as traffic is not at a standstill before wilshire, I stay on the highway. If traffic is stopped before wilshire I get off and take Kelly.

I took anatomy, TA'd it for two semesters before med school and I still go back to my undergrad to TA. In my undergrad the anatomy class was a prosection course, so I also took a dissection course which prepared the bodies for the anatomy course. So I had a strong background and have found anatomy in medical school pretty easy. The human structure course is 5 weeks long, the first week we did superficial and deep back, along with the thoracic cavity including the heart and lungs. I was very prepared for those and only about half of the material was new to me. The second and third weeks were head and neck. Probably 75% or more was new for me but I still found it pretty easy for me to learn.

With all that, I don't think one semester of anatomy will set you up with an advantage. Much of the class has never had anatomy before. But if those just have to work harder but for the most part they still learn it near to the level I do. I just don't have the stress and late hours like them.

Too bad I have to take Comparative Anatomy instead of Human Anatomy. Hopefully, it's still of some use next year

I have talked to several people that took comparative anatomy only and the opinions I received is that it wasn't very helpful. Probably depends on the class and student though. The big thing about medical school anatomy is the is no time to teach (and sometimes learn) the little details. Such as what a foramen, fossa, tubercle, sulcus, etc are. You pick it up from repeated use but in the beginning you have all these new terms that is like learning a second language.

Well I do at least know that vocab at this point. Hopefully it sticks.

I guess I'll keep studying for this practical either way

Rub it in, why don't you? 😉

Seriously, you can survive without having had anatomy beforehand, it's just extremely unpleasant.

I'm really worried about certain classes first off thanks to all those msI students (and msII) for advice.

I doubt I would be able to take the aforementioned classes I think it's fool's gold for me to entertain taking a class like histology, immunology, or anatomy.

If anything I'd like to take a class in general to get back into the flow of studying or maybe just go over biochemistry with my book since my senior year didn't go as well.

Biochem is my major but I don't even think I can rely on that in medical school.

I'm an electrical engineering major...I've only taken the minimum prereqs for medical school, so I'll be looking for some good study material as well lol.

not to cut off the anatomy discussion or anything, but I'm also looking into housing. To OUDoc or kb1990, either of you still looking for a female roommate? I'm not in the area right now, but will be in about a week to look at apartments, and I'm really thinking the Village on campus is a good option. Thoughts?

bc you're a GEEEEEK:laugh:

Thanks to this geek, you passed quantitative chemistry. Just admit it, your life is boring without me in it anymore.
I think I hear the nurses calling you to go wipe someones butt

Because of you I passed neurophys. Because of ME you passed quantitative analysis!!!! 😎

btw quit stalking me, its getting scary, next time i see you hiding in my bushes im going to sick my dog on you.:scared:

im not working the floor today (THANK GOD) im at the desk

So, I'm kind of confused.

I submitted my primary application way back in September, but haven't heard anything back since then. No secondary, no rejection, no nothing.

Seeing as how it's now Dec., can I safely assume I've been "silent rejection"ed?

Or might there be hope yet?

Are you sure your primary was verified and sent to OU? Or that your email address is correct with AMCAS? I was under the impression that the secondary was an automatic thing. I received an email for the secondary less than 24 hours after my AMCAS was verified. I think you should check to make sure they got it. It's pretty late in the cycle, though. I think February interviews will be sent out before December's over.

I hope you can get it figured out!

And I just remembered that the secondary was due by November 1. It looks like it's too late for OU this cycle. 🙁

Hopefully, another school this year or OU next year will work out. Good luck. :luck:
