Are these apartments one-, two- or three-bedroom apts.? How do you get matched up to other people?

There are both 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, and they won't match you with anyone. You can meet people at second look (or via a class facebook page) to find people to room with and go in on a lease together, or you can go ahead and rent the two bedroom and find a roommate a bit later.

While the Darragh apartments are great, I would also encourage you to look at off campus housing in north oakland and shadyside. It's a bit further away (North Oakland is about a 15 minute walk, shadyside you'd catch about a 10 minute bus), but you can generally find larger places for the money. The med students I know with the best housing setups are usually those that got a group of 3 or 4 together and rented a house or duplex.

I'm going to assume the Darragh apts are not pet friendly....?

Is there a PittMed website with available apts, houses, or duplex's listed? Or do most people go through companies? Maybe M4's who are leaving a really sweet living arrangement.

Accepted PSTP omg YAY!!😍
Excited to be joining Pitt this Fall!!!😀

That website is pretty handy for finding housing as a Pitt med student.

I live in Darragh and I really like it there. It's not as big as some of the apartments further away from school but its a good fit for me. Everything is included (washer/dryer in your apartment, dishwasher, electricity, water, basic cable and you have an air-conditioning/heating unit in each room). While for a 1 bedroom it is on the expensive side (around $900/month) for a 2 bedroom it is only about $560 per person every month. For what you get (all I mentioned above) and for the close proximity to the school (4 minute walk) it is very good. I don't mind being close to Scaife but a lot of people need to feel like when they go home, they are actually home in a different community away from school which is understandable. You can find housing away from school in Oakland, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Bloomfield etc for cheaper (maybe around 400-500 or so a month) with larger rooms and nicer set ups. Depends on the preferences of the student.

I'm wondering if any current medical students could answer a question about an average daily/weekly schedule. For example, on average are you in class (for the first two years) from 8 to noon? Or 8 to 5? Or is there a mix depending on the days? Any answers would be appreciated!

Short answer is every day/class is different. I'll give it a shot though. Basically we have 1 primary class going on at a time (currently neuro), and 2 classes that only meet once a week (like medical ethics, medical decision making, etc.). We also have a clinical course for 1 afternoon/week (either physical exam, medical interviewing, or just spending that time doing H&Ps in the hospital).

Monday: main Class from 9-12. If you have your clinical course that day then its 1-5, if not the afternoon is clear

Tuesday (worst day): main Class from 9-12 and 1-4. Usually there will be about 4 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab or PBL depending on the course

Wednesday: secondary classes in the morning (e.g. ethics from 8:30-10, medical decision making from 10-12), that may be either small group or lecture). Afternoon is usually main class from 1-3 or 1-4.

Thursday: Main class from 9-12. If you have your clinical course that day then its 1-5, if not the afternoon is free.

Friday: Main class from 9-12: If you have your clinical course that day then its 1-5, if not the afternoon is free.

Weekends = Party time/study time (depending on how soon the next exam is)

Anytime I say "main class" that can be lecture, lab, or pbl depending on the course. Obviously classes like anatomy have more lab, and classes like biochem have more lecture. In anatomy, classes generally started at 8, while most units class starts at 830 or 9.

Hope that helps.

Hey, do most students go to lecture? Are lectures video or audio recorded?

Thanks!

The amount of students that go to class varies based on the class (most people went to anatomy, biochem/genetics seemed about half full most days), the specific lecture/lecturer (a lecture on parts of a normal cell would have fewer people than the neurosurgeon's lecture where he showed clips of his endonasal surgeries..most people came to that one) and what else is going on at that time (Im guessing closer to psych time when the weather is much nicer (another 4 weeks, attendance will drop) and when you have major exams (many people don't go to the supplementary classes that are not mandatory close to major science course exams like micro or immuno).

The lectures are audio recorded and synced with video of the slides so you can see the progression of the slides alongside hearing the audio. Also, if you really wanted for some reason to go ahead of the class (girlfriend coming for a weekend, leaving to go somewhere for a couple days etc) most of the lectures from last year are on the website so you can just listen to those if you need to do so.

I usually go to class. That being said, I would say there are about 30 ppl that will ALWAYS be there and another 60 that come in and out.

lectures are video recorded so there is really no point in going

Hi everyone! I am a graduating MS-4 at Pitt Med, and am looking to sell my condo in Oakland. My family bought it when I was an incoming first year, and its been a great place to live during med school--its quiet, has free parking, and really convenient to the med school. The mortgage payments are way cheaper than paying rent.

If interested, email me at [email protected] for pics or more info.

Has anyone on the waitlist gotten an e-mail asking if they are still interested in Pitt? I got one today around 12:20 pm CST and I'm wondering if this is a good sign for getting off the waitlist.

My experience last year was that it was a good sign. I responded positively and was accepted shortly thereafter.

If you look at the thread from last year a bunch of people got that email on one day and were all accepted the next. [I'm too lazy (sorry!) to post the exact posts, but I believe it was sometime around March 15-20.] So it seems to be a good sign indeed -- congrats!

Just wondering if you have sent any letters of interest or updates?

Does anyone know if the recorded video lectures work with Ipads? I am thinking about getting one if I can use it to watch lectures.

I know someone who got the same letter today and they sent a letter a few months ago.. I would guess (with no proof) that this will be the last wave before second look weekend at the end of the month and then another wave might come at the traditional mid-May time frame

I got the same email.

Didn't send any letters btw.

Also, I replied in such a fashion that they might not straight up accept me tomorrow lol...

Yea, I got this email today as well. I called the office and they said this was not a generic email to waitlisted applicants. I hope good news is going to come soon. I'm sooooo excited 😀

Yessss. Major 👍 for calling. My response was short, but I made it clear that I'd take Pitt over the schools I'm currently accepted at. Hopefully good news tomorrow!

I don't play the game very well... I just mentioned that I was making my decision between some other schools based on stuff hinting at desiring financial incentives and what not. Also lol said "love to remain in consideration" when I should have said "love to have a spot." oh wellllll stressful days lately have been causing me to send uncharacteristically strange communication.

Got it. There no problem with being honest about it. I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Accepted off the waitlist today! First acceptance!! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

I didn't get the "interest email", but I'd already sent in more than 1 letter where I stated my interest.

Congratulations!! So begins my neurotic compulsive checking of emails again... I had pretty much given up on this school until yesterday.

I just did too!! And it was my first acceptance after a LONG LONG line of waitlists (including this one)!! So excited and RELIEVED, haha!

Congrats! The wait made the feeling even more amazing haha. I was sitting on 6 waitlists here.

I had seven myself, with a pending rejection from my state school. It wasn't looking good for a while....

Congrats everyone! Hope you guys will be some of my classmates next year. If you're interested, and haven't already, I would get signed up for the darragh street apartment. They fill up pretty quickly I hear. I'll be living there next year and would love to have you guys as neighbors.

When were you notified you got a spot? I filled out the application and never heard back.

I sent a letter a few weeks ago and didn't receive the email in the past few days. 🙁 Are there still a good number of people taken off the waitlist after the May deadline?

Attention people who got the e-mail: CHECK YOUR STATUS ON THE ADMISSIONS SITE.
oops. Sorry for yelling.
Just got a little excited.
But yeah, accepted!👍

I love you for checking, planktonelement, and for the heads up. Acceptance too! This better not be a computer glitch.

Accepted via status page as well!! I know it says we'll get mail within the next 2 weeks, but...anyone have any idea if we are also invited to second look at the end of the month?

If you are accepted you are invited to second look. You should get emails/info about it shortly.

I was also accepted after receiving the email yesterday!

I interviewed in October and was waitlisted in November. Good luck to everyone.

I filled out the application to be put on the waitlist in early march, and was called last week.

Oh ok. I definitely missed the ball on this one. Didn't turn it in til the end of March. Am I SOL?

Wait what? We have to fill something out to be on the waitlist? All I ever got was an update to my status page telling me I'm on the waitlist...no mention of any required action on my part.

No, no, no don't worry. I was confused at first too. They're talking about a waitlist for living situations.

Unfortunately no good news for me and checking my page. Oh wellz

Phew! Thanks. My bad for not reading back far enough.

Yeah that scared me too but Pitt is just killing me with all these waves of acceptances.. Each one is like getting waitlisted again haha.. I can't imagine they will let off another with second look weekend coming up in two weeks..
