I have a question about the prompts though. The 3 questions (I'm OOS) I have are 1) the autobiographical, don't reiterate your PS question, 2) abstracts, and 3) how have your experiences prepared you to be a physician?

I think #3 overlaps a lot with my PS and #1, how did you all differentiate between answering all parts of #1 and not repeating yourself completely in #3?

Thanks so much! I got an initial email on 8/13 and I was just starting to freak out about not hearing anything yet. Hopefully I'll be getting a secondary invite soon!

Hang in there! I still haven't received a secondary invitation OR rejection and my initial email was sent on 8/13. I am also OOS and UW is one of my top choices! This whole experience has taught me to be VERY patient. 🙂
 
Hey all

for those of you wondering about OOS tuition the way it works is the first year you're billed about 55k for out of state tuition. However, in talking to classmates you receive a 20k scholarship that first year so it brings it down to ~10-15k more than instate tuition. After your first year, you apply to receive a out of state tuition waiver. this is not the same as becoming a resident but for the other 3 years you basically only get billed for instate tuition and the amount over that is waived.

As someone mentioned you cannot get residency unless you are in wa for a year for something other than education. However, if you have family who will be transplanting with you i.e. spouse will be working full time in wa and kids will be enrolling in school then you will be granted state residency~

If anyone has any other questions feel free to ask~ for what it's worth i'm a first year at uw and was in your shoes not so long ago! good luck to everyone this season

Wow...thank you so much, that is really helpful. Makes final decisions easier when the OOS tuition is not too bad.
 
^Ooh great, I hope I hear back soon. I am IS and submitted late september. Very antsy/excited!
 
Well, I've been emailing with the Director of Admissions. Supposedly, I'm gonna get an interview invite, but the interview hasn't been scheduled yet. Which is a huge hassle, because I'm in-state but go to school out of state, so it might be tough to schedule. But the fact that the Director of Admissions told me I'm gonna get an invite... well that definitely makes up for it, doesn't it?

That's awesome, congrats!

I got an invite on Sunday (of all days) for Nov 4th! 😀 Very excited and grateful, hoping for the best. IS, was complete on 9/20.

Anybody else interviewing on 11/4?

I'm interviewing on 11/04 as well. OOS. SUPER excited!!
 
IS, secondary complete 9/20, inverview invite received on 10/17, interview scheduled for 11/1. Booyah!

Last year there seemed to be three/four possible outcomes after your interview:

A} Not admitted and hearing from the adcom immediately and either simply not admitted or told you are 'not ready' with some info about improving your profile. This 'not ready' seemed to be mostly about experience shadowing, volunteering, etc and other ways to prove to the committee that you are, in fact, certain you want to be a physician and have been exposed to enough real life situations that you can affirm this.

B} Delayed until spring, the majority of people seem to be admitted in the spring

C} Immediately admitted, a smaller percentage of immediate admits are offered a position right after the adcom meeting following their interview, usually within a week or so of their interview. Last year's FB page for new admits had about 20 people on it by Christmas.

Lol aren't there like 6 people per interview day? It would be weird if like 6 people scheduled on one day were all SDN people lol

I was complete very soon after you (10/4) and they sent an email saying "Congratulations, your application is now complete, etc, our review of your application will take one month or more"

....So maybe you have a few days before you can get worried? good luck
 
anyone know when the first adcom meeting is? or when the first day is that people start hearing back about acceptances?

Same boat as you. . . IS completed 10/4. I'm thinking this week is our week.
 
Interview invite by email today for November 30! In-state applicant, complete on 9/2 (well far sooner than that actually, but that's when they confirmed my completion 🙂)

i noticed nobody has posted anything on the interview feedback page for uw this year - anyone who has already interviewed care to respond as to how the interview went this year? questions asked?

i interviewed a few days ago. when were the first interviews? i'm not familiar with the interview calendar. should i be expecting a response too?

interviews started the week of oct 11th. my excom mentioned that official notices would go out in a couple days. maybe your excom wasn't at the meeting or maybe they haven't gotten around to calling? good luck! :luck:
 
I interviewed on the 12th and I still have not heard anything yet!

I am going nuts!

Anyone else interview the 11th or 12th and not hear anything?

I was called by my Excom! For those of you who interviewed the first few days, don't panic. Excoms don't always make it to each of the meetings so there could be delay in finding out that has nothing to do with how you did.

In general, how the process works is that applicants are given an interview score after their interview. This score then ranks all interviewed applicants in the order in which they are discussed at meetings by their Excom. So if you interviewed early and got a good score relative to other applicants that day or that week as the school interviews more people, your order in the pile may change going up or down based on new interviewee scores.

Mine was much more conversational than I thought it'd be. I had heard stories about how hard they grilled you but I didn't feel that way at all, rather I felt that they were genuinely interested in getting to know me. I also heard that they have been trying to change people's perceptions. I'd say the great majority of my interview was about me and my application and the rest on the policy, ethics, and role play.

What was the role play about? and what kind of ethic questions did they ask u?
 
Hey guys- I just filled out a survey about my interview experience. Hope that helps! I interviewed on 10/12, so the second day of interviews. Things were still a little rusty, but it was a great experience.

mine was very much the same way. the policy/ethics/role play were tailored around my application - i think i had a total of 4 questions around health care policy and reform, and my ethics question was kind of a hybrid with policy. they definitely push you, but not in a bad way. it's something you definitely want to read up on.

Congrats everyone! I'm jealous. As an OOS, I apperently didn't meet their min cut off scores (30P, 3.9) so auto reject 🙁 Such a shame, UW was really high on my list. Though, I'm apperently still in the running for MSTP. We'll see if I've got a shot in h*ll for that 😛

Wait you aren't serious about 3.9 and a 30P are you? I don't have anywhere near a 3.9 - if you're serious, then I might as well not go to my interview...

NO...StephBee cannot not serious about the 30P, 3.9 seeing as you and I both got interviews. I have a 28O, 3.8overall, 3.7science. Don't lose hope.

If they invited you to interview then they would like to have you as a student👍...pending your interview so trust me, you passed the cut.

I know, I was kind of shocked about the rejection too but I'm totally serious about my 3.9, 30P. Are you guys In state? Also, I applied late so they may have upped their cut-offs or just flat out stopped inviting people OOS this late in the cycle (wasn't verified by amcas till mid october). Who knows. I was sad though🙁.

this was the email I got from them:The Admissions Committee for the University of Washington School of Medicine has completed its preliminary review of your application. As an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the regular medical school program. We thank you for your interest in our School of Medicine.
If, however, you have applied to the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), your application may still be under consideration.

I'm still holding out hope for MSTP but my stats are rather low for that....

PS: Skyhyp2009, you're MCAT is rediculous. Even if you're gpa is lower, your stellar mcat probably put you well above the screen.
THat makes me wonder, do they use a formula between mcat and gpa or just use your mcat score to screen? Oh well, guess it doesn't matter now.

^for OOS its much more than a numbers screen. They want people who have experience with underserved communities.. I think their FAQ on the admissions site talks about this
 
Fair enough! I knew they look for people who have experience with underserved communities but kind of assumed it was numbers based because they rejected me the day my amcas was verified... So either they're *really* fast or didn't really look at my application all that much.
C'est la Vie.

EDIT: I just looked it up:
The WGPA (weighted GPA)* is added to the mean MCAT score then converted to a 4.0 scale so that the maximal CS (Combined score) = 8
(eg. WGPA = 2.4, mean MCAT = 9 then CS would be calculated as 2.4 + (9/3.75) = 4.8).
If this combined score is less than 5, the application is automatically screened out and the applicant will not be invited to complete a secondary application
....

Ahh! More research:
For non-WWAMI applicants, an additional review will follow to determine if the applicant meets the criteria for out-of-region candidates.

sigh. rejections came out today. i am "not ready", according to UW SOM.

well! there's always other schools! not the end of the world =D

I'm sorry. I like your attitude though 👍. Most people I know that got in at UWSOM had to reapply. Can I ask what day you interviewed? I'm trying to gauge generally when people hear back because I think 3-4 weeks is too long.
