Thought I'd increase the neuroticism in this thread a bit and throw out some "research" I did into scholarships from last year's thread. Scholarships started being awarded in early December (~the 10th) via a second call from the dean. A few people that were accepted later on (January or February) were offered scholarships along with their acceptances, though this doesn't seem to be the norm. All scholarships were awarded by March, but if they are awarded to someone that withdraws they will be reawarded to another accepted individual.

I thought I'd share this since for me getting a significant scholarship here would end the cycle for me, and I'm guessing others might be in the same boat.

Best of luck everyone!

Did you happen to notice any commonalities among those awarded scholarships (e.g., stats)?

To be honest I didn't take the time to look at MDApps profiles (if they were there) and I didn't really take note of stats. If you'd like to look yourself, though, just search "2009-2010 vanderbilt" and go to page ~18 or so.

Do you think I am out for getting a scholarship?

I got in, no waitlist or anything like that, but I interviewed in August and found out almost 12 weeks later.

P.S. Were any of you that were accepted able to check out the housing listings? I couldn't get the username/password they provided us to work.

Just a little side note, I haven't been paying much attention in here to add my $0.02...

I'll give you some more housing sources other than Vandy

There are a number of houses around campus that are for rent. I know of students who get together and "shack up." Like if you go down Natchez Trace toward 440 down in that area...Cute houses. I'd totally love to live in there - simple bike ride/walk to campus.

The apts in Vandy Village (across from Children's/East Garage) are $$, when I moved here a studio I think was like 450sqft for like $650. (This was 4+ years ago)

A free housing service www.aptselector.com You give them your price range and area you want to live in and they'll give you the places with openings and other details.

There are a few apt complexes down 21st just on the other side of 440 (say 5-10mins depending on traffic & stop lights). I think prices there are around $900/mo for a 1bdr.

As always, if any of you have any questions, you are welcome to PM me.

Congrats to the acceptees and good luck to those waiting!

Hey all. For those of you who interviewed Oct 15th, just thought you might be interested: I just called to check on my file status and I haven't gone to committee yet. So, if you're waiting, you might be in a similar boat!

Hmm I'd like to add my .02$ since I think those are probably the places where undergrads live or something...not too many of us around there.

First of all, I tried apartmentselector and thought it really wasn't useful at all. It only had some of the bigger apartment buildings and didn't include any of the smaller or independent places, which are often both cheaper and nicer.

The vast majority of med students live inside the 440 loop in the Acklen Ave/ Fairfax Ave area. It's within a short walking distance to the hospital and there are a ton of apartments here. Apartment rents vary- generally if you live with a roommate or two, you can get a place for maybe 500-600$ each if you're smart in your search. If you want one of the nicer, newer places it can get up to 700-800$ per person. For a 1-bedroom in this area, I'd say they range from 800-1300$.

Another popular area is down West End Ave (if you look at the map of Vandy campus, it's left of West End, still within 440). It's not as quick of a walk and most people from there drive or take shuttles if they happen to be next to a Vandy building, but apartments can be a bit cheaper (2 of my friends live over there and they share a really nice 2 bed, 2 bath for 1100 total).

The area around Belmont University, which is 18th Ave and thereabouts is probably the third most popular area to live in. Again, most people over there drive but they have cute houses and such. A handful of people live downtown and a few people do live outside the 440 loop, although many of them have moved in closer this year. Generally those that live farther away are the ones with families or who live with an SO and who want an actual house or a pretty big, nice condo.

As for Village At Vanderbilt, which is literally across the street from the Hospital (in fact, many doctors' offices are in the building itself) it really is very expensive. I think the cost for a studio now is at least 800-900$. A true one bedroom is maybe 100 square feet larger (550-600 sq ft) and costs maybe 12-1300. Not really worth it in my opinion, unless you're the kind of person who hates walking around in bad weather even for 5-10 minutes or who is always late to class or something. A couple of the people I know who live there don't even have a car.

Ok, I hope this helps. If the website doesn't work now, I'm sure it will soon.

One more thing: traditionally, the first years create this big publication called the Paddle for the incoming kiddos. A big chapter in the Paddle is dedicated to housing, and that's usually sent to you guys just about right after second look weekend, once you have basically figured out if you're coming here and once you may have met someone you want to live with. That will really be an invaluable resource since it has some reviews of apartments and landlords and stuff too.

Hey LET, do you have any idea what the merit committees are looking for in a student that they're considering for a full scholarship? I'm thinking more and more about neurosurgery; in which case I'd much rather go straight through the regular MD program than the MSTP. But the only way that's even possible for me is if I get a full ride. My undergrad & post-bac debt is already nearly $100k. Any of your input would be greatly appreciated!

Just wanted to say thank you to all leaving their input on Housing here. Ever since I received a phone call from Vandy a month ago, I've been hearing more and more good things about here (then again, my selectivity filter might be biased a bit 😉 ) Anywho, I'm definitely looking forward to second look weekend and the Paddle publication. Housing has me entirely worried that's for sure, but I suppose it will work itself out--it always does. 🙂 Looking forward to meeting those accepted in April and good luck to those still in the process!

Hey!

I wish I could tell you what it is they look for in merit scholarship recipients. The truth is, I have no idea. Even the assumption "they're trying to get you not to go to other med schools" doesn't really hold water because one of the merit scholarship folks in my class had already committed to coming here through the early Vandy program when she received the money...All I can really gather based on the people who have scholarships is this: basically there are those who are very highly qualified URM's or who represent other minorities (even LGBT counts), and then there are those who are very competitive in one way or another. In general, they have amazing grades, above-average research, and are pretty well-rounded. On top of that, they're fairly fun and sociable and non-robot-like. I know this doesn't really help, but like everything else about this process (maybe more so) getting a merit scholarship is about luck as much as it is about merit. Most applicants, and certainly most of the people who get in here are fantastic all around, so what drives you over the masses is pretty vague.

I am going to say however that you shouldn't complain too vocally about only being able to go to med school if you get a full ride. They are REALLY rare. A lot of people have undergrad debt, and even if you tack on med school debt, you should be able to pay it back. I'm pretty sure they give good need-based money here too so if you have a very high need, they may be able to help you anyway, but either way, going into MSTP just cause you want the free ride really isn't worth it. Just hope for the best and prepare for the worst (all loans).

I've been under review here for the past 10-11 weeks! No secondary or anything!

That cannot be good!

Best of luck to you all!

I think you missed what I was saying and we actually had similar points. 🙂

It only had some of the bigger apartment buildings and didn't include any of the smaller or independent places, which are often both cheaper and nicer. Sucks you had a bad experience, but they were helpful both times for me - and free. Not to mention they do the leg work for you and can get you ideas of areas and prices/availability/specials when you're busy (like finals for those of you still in school).

This is the same area I was talking about for the houses that are for rent. Acklen and Fairfax run parallel to Blakemore; Natchez crosses Blakemore perpendicularly over by the practice football field. It's the chunk of housing between Natchez and 21st from campus to 440. Post-docs and faculty live down there, in addition to students. It's gorgeous! Parks and other goodies (restaurants close, Belcourt Theater, Harris Teeter grocery, laundry...)!

I'm sure this question is answered elsewhere in the thread, but I can't find it. Does anybody know when/how often the committee meets?

Thanks!🙂

Damn...looks like I officially killed the conversation

It's okay, you are now all exempt from answering the question...chat-on Vandy hopefuls!

Got accepted today, too! Interviewed the last week of October. So excited! This is one of my top choices.

Nope, no scholarship offer for me. Not gonna lie, I was secretly hoping, but it doesn't seem like SDNers have heard about $$ yet?

Does anyone know how often their admissions committee meets? If the calls today were for the late October and early November interviewees, I guess the next call day will be around Jan 12?

To anyone who has already interviewed, are the interviews open or closed file? And if open, do they have access to both the primary and secondary or just the primary? I keep finding conflicting information.

no call. interviewed oct. 22.
there seemed to be few people who got it a bit later, but that seemed like the exception.

short but seemingly long wait for a waitlist confirmation letter? 🙁

It's open file, but just the AMCAS stuff. They don't read your secondary or letters of recommendations until after your interview.

I interviewed 10/15 and as of last Thursday still had not gone to committee, so don't assume that you're waitlisted at this point. They may just not have had the chance to review your file yet. Good luck!!

thanks for that post. definitely makes me a feel a bit more optimistic. good luck to the both of us!

Just letting everyone know, I interviewed two weeks ago and they specifically said almost all scholarship offers will be sent out in March. As students withdraw acceptances close to May 15th, this money will be spread around some more.

Hope that helps!

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Let, how would you describe the cultural/ethnic diversity of the classes?

Also, for the emphasis program, how much are you guys paid? Are people ever upset with the project they are assigned to do? Do any leave the country for those 8 weeks to pursue the project? How much time is left between the end of the project and the beginning of year 2?

Is your tuition fixed for your class?

Well I'm not Let, but I did interview here this last weekend and can answer just about all of your questions. There are only 11 URM in the current 4th year class but they have increased that to 24 in the current first year class and plan to continue. You get paid $3600 over the summer for the Emphasis program. You pick your project so if you are upset, blame yourself. My tour guide was planning on going to China, and she said (as well as my interviewer) that it is pretty common and that it is fairly easy with all of the connections the university has. I don't know how much time is left between the end of the project and year 2 but I am guessing only a few weeks at most. Tuition is not fixed but the financial aid office said they will not increase tuition more than 5% per year.

I hope that helps!

So, yesterday afternoon at 3:05 (west coast time) I had a missed call from Vandy, but there was no message. Anyone else get one of these?

I got one of those a while back. I called the admissions office and they said they hadn't made that call. The next day I got the call again. It was my interviewer calling to see how I was doing and whether I was still considering Vandy.

Hmmm...well I guess it's a good excuse to call the admissions office again 🙂 Still waiting to hear back about their decision, so hopefully the call was a good sign. Thanks for replying!

Don't wanna burst your bubble, but my acceptance notification was left on my voicemail. I think they'll leave you a voicemail if that's what they're calling about, but who knows... :luck:

Bubble intact. I didn't think it was the Dean calling. Trust me, I had a glimmer of hope, but I read this thread enough to know better 😀 Just thought maybe it was my interviewer saying hi, or the like. Thanks for the reality check though...I can use one every once in awhile!

Not sure what you guys are talking about regarding emphasis and year 2. Emphasis is basically all of the first two years and ends before you start studying for the boards. Maybe the question isn't clear? I agree with the rest.

Hi All,

Does anyone have info on rough time frame of second look weekend? I'm looking into flights and wasn't sure what time that I should be sure to arrive by, time to leave at the end of the weekend, etc. Any information would be much appreciated. 🙂

Thank you,
Bubbly

When will Vandy finally reject me?!

I have been complete since mid-September and have not heard a peep!!

Just got off the phone with admissions. They said that they may have gotten to me last week, but they may get to me this week. They are so nice there despite me calling every five minutes. So, hopefully I'll know a little somethin' in time for Christmas.

Coincidentally, I will be spending Christmas in Nashville, so it would be CRAZY to get good news while I'm there. Then I could celebrate at the honky tonks. Of course, I have no expectation that I will actually get in, but still...fun to think about 🙂

getting antsy... I should hear back from Vanderbilt MSTP before the holidays! :luck::xf:😍:meanie:👍😎🙂😀😉

Straight MD here, but while before the holidays would be nice, after is more likely for me. No acceptances recently? I'm interested in the timing of when interviewees are going into committee right now!
