Oookk.. Scratch what I said earlier! I just got the secondary. Here are the questions (and I've pmed ksm with these):

6. Please answer ONE of the following questions
1. The Committee on Admissions invites you to share important and/or challenging factors in your background, such as the quality of your early educational environment, socioeconomic status, culture, race, ethnicity or life or work experiences. Please discuss how such factors have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.

Or

2. What do you see as the most likely practice scenario for your future medical career?
Why do you believe that you are particularly suited for this practice scenario?
What knowledge, skills and attitudes have you developed that have prepared you for this path?


7. Personal Statement
Complete if you have additional comments or something specific to say to the school.
 
uuuugh... new essays this year. Had em written too...
 
I'm pretty excited about this one. I feel like Wake could be a really good fit for me and these essay questions are perfectly suited to my situation. I hope I get a chance to interview here.
 
That is the begining part of the URL, but mine was a lot longer. I would email admissions and ask them to re-send the link. I'm sure if posting the link is ok or not.
 
Anyone have any insight into how "optional" WF's personal statement is? I ask because my state school has a similar prompt that is also labeled as optional, but the FAQ on the school's website says "By not rewriting the personal statement, it gives the impression that the applicant is not dedicated." I don't want to be perceived as lazy, but I also don't want to make reviewers wade trudge through another essay if it is truly optional in this case...
 
I'm definitely going to write something, but I don't know how long. I hate that there isn't a word/character max. How long do you thing a good essay would be?
 
I usually write something for optional essays, unless previous applicants or matriculants said you can skip it.
It usually isn't too hard to find some information that you could use in such an essay.

So many secondaries have spelling/grammar mistakes, it's almost surprising.
 
David, I posted it a few posts back. Do you guys really think this is an optional-but-not-really essay? Anyone from last year say something similar?

Has anyone determined is this is a bad, good, or eh/blah message? I figured wake is going to screen me out... but I just want to confirm that before I move on and forgot about Wake.

I'm presuming this is pre-secondary, correct? The message is straight forward, they will review and then will send a secondary if you are screened in. Mine was under review for a while and then I got screened in.

Gotchya. Yes, this is pre-screen. I think somewhere earlier in this thread they mentioned this was a bad sign... or maybe it's a bad sign if it says your application has been reviewed but no mention of being screened in.

I think I am just worried about getting my first rejection, haha.
 
I got the initial email 3 days ago and now it says:
Your AMCAS application has been evaluated and we are sending you our secondary application by e-mail. Please allow 2 weeks for the application to be sent to you as we send them out in batches.

Woo hoo!! - I have the same status now: "Your AMCAS application has been evaluated and we are sending you our secondary application by e-mail. Please allow 2 weeks for the application to be sent to you as we send them out in batches."

This means I'm screened-in, right??

No it's definitely not a bad sign. I got my first rejection a few weeks ago from West Virginia, so I'm over the hump already :laugh:
 
I have the same "your application is under review message." Its funny to think that someone at a medical school will actually be looking at my application. Hope they don't laugh too hard!
 
How much is everybody writing for their essays? Are most people doing the extra "personal statement" thing? I have a good 500-word essay for the required essay and am thinking that will make me look interested enough in Wake Forest w/o providing additional comments. What do you all think?
 
I went with about 500 words for the required one and closer to 300 for the optional one.
 
How is everyone interpreting the practice scenario essay? Are you going to talk about what specialty? Or are they looking for whether academic or private practice?

I talked about wanting to practice in a rural area. I think you could answer this in anyway you want. They aren't specific at all and that might be intentional.
 
About how long was it from when you were verified to when you heard something from Wake?

OMG!!!! I passed the screen! I'm so excited. 😍 I know this is super lame, but being a reapplicant and turned down everywhere last time I applied just makes me feel like my application must be super lame and not worthwhile to every school.... but there was something that wake forest liked! Even if they don't interview me, there was something!

edit: Also -- is there only 2 essays (the And/or one posted and additional comment one). What are the word/character limits?

I am tempted to write about importance aspects of my background -- but it will be slightly more about other people from my background effecting me (like my best friend sleeping in the same bed as her mom for cultural/economic reasons) -- but also, living abroad in a free health care system and also my experience with a major pest in my graduate student household. OR is this question really more about if you are not white/middleclass and had education/life challenges... and not what I want to talk about?

I think talking about my future practice scenerio will be lame and pretty much already covered in my PS (Well the qualities/skills I have gained to both be a clinical and research physician)

I talked about both...thank goodness for their non-existent word limit (I used about 450 words?)
 
I think I am going to write about specialty to avoid sounding like a complainer- I don't have any major disadvantage stories, and I didn't mention type of medicine at all in my PS.

Any agreement on the additional info- I actually have been steering clear of those... last year it said " *Complete if you have additional comments or something specific to say to the school," which makes it seem like its only if you have a special circumstance. Any thoughts?
 
I am a OOS with a 35R with 3.85 BCPM and 3.93 overall. I still haven't even received the first email you guys have been talking about that says they're considering my application. To your knowledge does this mean I have been pre-screened out?
 
The first prompt says important and/or challenging factors, life, work experiences etc so I talked about a few life and work experiences that were important to my decision to enter medicine...

Didn't really discuss challenging background etc b/c I don't have anything really to say for that.. hope thats okay haha 🙂

No, not at all. They even say they do things "in batches." They will definitely tell you if you have been screened out.
 
Would it be a bad idea to discuss how you are not exactly sure what your practice scenario will be? This is the situation I'm in, I don't have a specific specialty I know I will pursue and mostly intend to keep an open mind going into school. I do know I'd like to work in a hospital with the opportunity to do some clinical outreach, so my draft discusses that scenario as the most likely.

Any thoughts? Thanks.
 
Hey guys!

I've been on the SDN boards for about a year and I'm officially MS1 at Wake now! If you have any questions, please pm me since I don't really come back here all that often.

Orientation week is underway for us and everyone is incredibly nice. When they say Wake is a "fit" school, they really mean it. Everyone here is very friendly and cordial and easy to talk to and get along with. The upperclassmen are very helpful and nice as well. Basically, if you want a place where you'd get lots of support and can also provide it, Wake is great.

If you were screened out, they might have just gotten the impression that you wouldn't fit. It's not a personal thing by any means (if so, then many personal insults are headed most applicant's ways from many schools). I know right now at the application stage, the mentality is "well I just need to get in somewhere". When you actually start school though, you'll realize that some schools work great with you and others don't. So just keep that in mind. Focus on being comfortable in whichever school you choose.

I cannot answer questions about the new application because I never saw it. If you have any questions though about the school, people, area, moving here etc. feel free to pm me and I'll answer to the best of my ability. Good luck 2015! 🙂
 
what percentage of students get rejected first round?? It seems like they didn't have a set cut-off based on gpa and MCAT...
 
This time last year I was screened-in and was less qualified. Since then I have:

-Been published in the Journal of Neurophysiology
-Been published in an undergraduate health policy journal.
-Finished a M.S. in Neuroscience w/ a 3.97 at Tulane
-Volunteered in Neuro Rehab Unit
-Volunteered in Hospice Facility
-Conducted free GED tutoring for brain injured patients

I understand the medical school application process is a crapshoot and seemingly random. I also understand that the caliber of applicants changes year to year. However, I believe I deserve further explanation.

This is just venting, so take it with a grain of salt. I need to forget about this so I can finish my other secondaries strong.
