Oh and 1 more thing. Yes, people will share study guides and extra material that they found helpful... when they are done with the class. The reviews Sunshine1025 is talking about were sent by 2nd years, as were the slides for that 1 biochem exam. THe circulating video review that I never got was circulating among year 1 students. I definitely stand by what I said, people in your class will prefer that you (the rest of your class as a whole) did worse. This will lower the passing grade and increase their chances to score a higher z-score. People here are nice I believe, it's just the system that makes many of us this way.

Agreed with your second post - I just felt like your first post made Wayne look like a terrible school you would never want to go to if given the choice again. Which may be true, I don't know. As for being a genius - definitely not. I go to school, study for a couple hours after dinner, and study on the weekends maybe five hours a day total in between working out, church, cleaning, everything else. I wasn't implying you were a bad student, I was saying there are quite a few bitter people in our class I've noticed and talked to and they usually have other life circumstances going on that make med school a lot more difficult for them and come with a lot more bad attitudes towards it. Which is fine - I am a typical undergrad to med school student that has no other obligations in life so it's a lot easier for me to study uninterupted than other students and may make me less empathetic to such students (which is completely unintentional).

I have some of the same problems with Wayne you do, I just think those problems are at every school. Sorry 🙁 I don't want to argue... and no, there is nothing spectacular about Wayne in the least, but I also don't think there are many other things that set other medical schools apart from one another, either. I think the clinical experience at Wayne is great, and the fact that most M4's (94%) apparently matched in their top three which is way above national (81%) MD schools is pretty great, too. I hate Detroit which is why I don't live there, and I'm a streamer so I only go in for required days/exams.

I have my list of reasons I hate Wayne, too, but I also have my list of reasons Wayne is going to give us a good education. I'm nervous for USMLE Step 1 next year, but I know our student senate is trying to petition them to get some study materials for us starting this summer so we can really knock it out of the park. (There is no way I am studying this summer, but I appreciate them trying to make more things available for us) With that said I think Wayne does just fine with their match rate just released. Wayne has a good rep in the state, and in the state is where I want to practice when I graduate.

Sorry...

I'm a little irritated about the recent posts that have been made so I felt the need to chime in. First, all schools have their pros and cons, obviously. But I have spent the last two years in the med school (as a graduate student, not a med student). I have MANY friends in the med school and I can say that the majority of them feel the way Sunshine does, not dadocca. I applied to some great med schools but withdrew my applications from all of them once I was accepted into Wayne. Z-score drama aside, the people are wonderful (students, staff, faculty, everyone). The clinical experiences are amazing. And I love the school.

PS: In regards to being "Wayned": please know that every school has something similar...an expression used by bitter students who don't get everything they want from the school. Fortunately, once you live a little longer and spend some time in the "real world", you realize life isn't fair and learn to roll with the punches!

Haha I love being the villan. If the only posts that you see on sdn are positive then people will learn the hard way when they start. I am simply pointing out the flaws, which I feel are serious and overlooked on here.

I chose to apply to Wayne for its clinical reputation and location. I do NOT regret going here! And I am really looking forward to the clinical years here. Are the people here nice? Yes! Students and faculty are generally really nice. Faculty will go out of their way to answer any questions and are very approachable. Fellow students are always pleasant (though most including myself are just never around) - Streaming/making lecture attendance optional is a big plus I found. Nobody will try to sabotage you and if you ask something from anyone about anything school related they will answer you. We have fun after the exams and there are many organizations and opportunities to serve in the community. Co-corricular (getting school credit for doing volunteer work) is something that Wayne is proud of.

I am a fairly typical student both in and out of the class so please don't think I am some bitter, failing, hating life student. I actually enjoy learning the material for the most part and faculty try to tie in additional information to make details sound more clinically relevant. This is both good and bad, since you are then expected to memorize this detail for the exam but people who write the boards do not expect you to know it until you are out in the clincal world. The grading system is bad, it encourages unnecessary competition and makes you lose sight of what's important. The prep for step 1 is fully independent, with just enough time to prepare and immediately start year 3. And from what I have seen and heard the board is styled and written very different than how the tests are here. But in the end everyone passes it and again, I might be wrong but our average has typically been the national average. WE DO HAVE A PRETTY GOOD MATCH RATE!! I attribute much of that to the clinical years, which Wayne is known for.

Tough crowd haha. Anyways, I gave you guys my $0.02 - take it or leave it. PM me if you have any questions. 😀

Gujudoc, man, you sound like a scared kids, who made the big kids fight 😉 😉 😉 😉
I for one throughly enjoyed the debate. It is awesome to see both sides.
And adding pepper to the fire......
I know I am going to do well, wayned or not. there is so much material to study.... study it... enjoy med school..... life's way too short too take stress about z scores. enjoy your zzzzzzzzzzs

HAHAHAHA dodocca! You are definitely not the villain! 😛 And I do agree with you that posts should definitely include the positive AND negative. I just feel that we could find at least one person to dislike almost EVERY aspect of a school, so it's important for people looking for information to get facts since opinions (while very important and often informative) can be misleading and are based on individual experiences that may not apply to many others.

And for those who are interested, below is a link about Sunshine's match stat. Last Friday (the 17th) was Match Day and the M4's at Wayne matched at 94%. In 2010, Wayne matched at 93% (link is below too). If you ask me, these are very impressive numbers for such a huge class!

2011:

Haha thanks! Like I said, Wayne is not a bad school by any means it just has those 2 major flaws. We have a history of matching the national average in board scores and Match. My guess is that by ranking everyone relative to each other, it just makes (like most of the class) us average. In other words, it helps some and hurts others. 94% is exactly what the national average was for matching this year, which is pretty good and impressive considering the size of the class. Ahh I promised myself not to spend anymore time on SDN! Ok back to studying I go.... got to be better than average!! 😛

Yep, no change still waitlisted..ugh!

lol don't forget it's not even a real waitlist. we could still be rejected after may 4th. They'll probably make a real final waitlist by then or around May 15.

Same here. After multiple attempts, interviews, and waitlists, the slightest glimmer of hope of being able to finally (after 8 years) move on from being a pre-med to an actual medical student has gone remarkably dim.

I'm not anticipating any good news come May 4. In fact, I predict I will once again not even be invited to join the extended waitlist and instead be rejected (again).

I'm going to apply to the Caribbean for next year (Fall 2012) if and when that happens.

This just REALLY, REALLY, REALLY sucks.

Yikes didn't know that...

Waitlisted today, interviewed 2/24. Was on the extended waitlist last year all throughout the summer until classes started. Re-applied and waitlisted again. Very frustrating.

So is May 4 the deadline date to decide on 1 school?

Accepted today (well, technically yesterday now)!! 😀 Interviewed 2/28. OOS, 3.4 ugrad, 3.9 grad, 35 mcat.

Can't wait to live in/around Hockeytown!! 😎

Congrats to the acceptances from yesterday!! Manbearpig's post reminded me: if anyone is planning on living downtown and wants to know anything about the area, I've grown up next to Detroit my whole life (and am actually moving into my midtown loft TOMORROW 😀 ) so I can answer some questions about downtown if anyone has some.

What's the best place to live in downtown?! haha.

I completed in October, interviewed in March, and just got the dreaded "Alternate list" status yesterday. Last year they kept me on this list until classes started. Now I'm just waiting again. Medical school better be worth this agaony!
Congrats to those accepted yesterday.

IS, 3.7, 30O, 1500+ clinical hours, 5 published abstracts, two research positions.

How many times has everyone who has been waitlisted applied IN TOTAL (not just including when you've been waitlisted, if applicable)?

I'm just curious.

I just applied last year, and once more this year.

I just applied last year, and once more this year.

Same. Applied last year was put on the final waitlist until classes started and re-applied this year and was just put on the waitlist. Guess we'll find out if I make it to the final one this year again.

Haha well it really depends what you're looking for. I have looked at quite a few places (I was originally looking to rent but ultimately decided to purchase a loft instead). Some rental places I liked and considered living in were 55 Canfield Lofts, Lofts at Merchant Row, Ellington Lofts, Washington Square Apartments (you have to look around and decide where you want to live too, like Midtown is great because it's a nice area and close to school. I considered apartments right in the downtown Detroit area though because I really like the city and having all the stadiums/restaurants/bars right there, and it's still only like a 2 minute drive to school). For anyone looking for something more long term, the two places in Midtown that I considered and ultimately ended up purchasing one of were Willy's Overland Lofts and Garden Lofts. You can find some really decent prices on places down here now since the housing market was so low, but I know a lot of people want to (or are currently working on) building Detroit back into a great city so I am very confident my loft will increase in value in the coming years (from the time I originally looked at the place in December until the time I signed my final agreement papers this week, there were originally 15 lofts still available in my building and now there are 4. Lots of people moving int 🙂 ).

I would recommend staying away from Studio 1 Apartments on Woodward Ave. It's a fantastic location, super-convenient for school, and the model loft that they show everyone looks really great, but I've heard (and read) some not-so-great things about the building. For example, it's very dirty in the common areas, the appliances look nice and shiny and new but end up breaking quite frequently, and (most importantly to me) there are a lot of Wayne State undergrad students moving into the building recently so the noise level is quite high on the weekends (not to mention the Starters Bar and Grill is now on the first level, so if you have a second floor apartment on that side of the building it could be really bad on the weekends).

Just my two cents! 🙂

Thanks for the valuable info, sedaniel. I think you may have a thing for lofts . The Garden Lofts and Willy's Lofts are really neat. I was thinking about Royal Oak (my cousin lived there when she went to WSU-SOM), but now you have me thinking about investing in Detroit property 😕. I'm really only have 2 criteria though: 1) proximity to ice rinks, and 2) a place to put/air-out my hockey equipment

Haha, well unfortunately I can't help you out with that since I don't play hockey so I wouldn't know where anything like that is, but you could google it and see if there's any rinks nearby. All I know is that there is a community ice rink in Campus Martius (http://www.campusmartiuspark.org/) right in downtown Detroit and that there is the Red Wings stadium downtown.

Obviously it's a big decision to buy a place, but if you are planning on staying here for not only med school but for residency, it could be a good investment. I hope to stay in the area for residency, but if I can't manage to stay, the good thing about buying a place in Midtown is that I will be able to rent the place out to a med student if I have to.

Well I am off to move in today so wish me luck with moving all these freaking boxes haha

Haha. Thank you so much for the info..I guess i'll google and look into those lofts:laugh: I wrote on your profile under discussion but I guess you don't check there as often as on this page..haha

Can anyone who has been accepted or wait listed share their stats?
I'm tryig to figure out where I stand amongst the collective.

Check out the Troy Sports Center, I'm pretty sure they have hockey leagues. It's also pretty close to Royal Oak.

Yeah, they saw that you would be their neighbor and now the building is sold out!😉 Maybe you should do real estate on the side?

Hey guys - just wanted to correct the comment made about the "average" match rate at Wayne. Wayne is in fact, quite a bit higher than average!!

94% of MD students in the country match somewhere.
81% of MD students in the country match in their top 3 choices.
94% of Wayne State SOM students match in their top 3 choices - 13% ABOVE the national average. 🙂
>94% of Wayne State SOM students match somewhere.

National Stats: http://www.nrmp.org/pressrelease2011.pdf
Wayne's Stats claiming the top 3 choices info (someone also already provided this link!): http://prognosis.med.wayne.edu/arti...-class-ever--achieves-94-percent-on-match-day

Check it out! I'm just proud of my school and don't want it to look average as previously claimed. This is another reason I chose Wayne 🙂

Haha, you're right! I stand corrected. I like my school too. I think they should fix the grading system and do something like either end year 2 ealier or have a part of the end of the year focus on review of systems or something to give us an edge on the board. Not necessary, but it would be nice. Overall, I still attribute much of our success to the clin years here. By the way do you know where they post the Match list? (haha as you can see I am procrastinating on my neuro studies 😳)

what's the earliest you hear back after you get interviewed? how are the interview's and does anyone know what the class size is and how full it is? i'm interviewing march 30th

Hey guys…I'm a MS1 almost a MS2! If you have any questions about relocating, housing, school, anything feel free to PM me!

See you guys next year during welcome week…there will be a party EVERY NIGHT so make sure to party hard before your lives sux

I think they release the match list in June. I don't know why they wait so long. But I was in the student affairs last week to get some records sent for my externship and saw there was a poster in there with where all of the 2011 grads matched.... so the list has to be somewhere.

Neuro isn't bad, but I have been procrastinating soooo much. I'm in summer mode 😎

Is it just me or shouldn't it be 50s and 60s in weather by this time of the year rather then the weather that I experienced coming here for my tomorrow morning interview??? LOL

I thought it would be a bit warmer at this time of the year. Last year at this time i lived in Boston and it was warmer by this time of the year and greenery started coming back. But even they are getting hit by similar weather this year.

nope we still need one more snow drop in April, then it starts to change. The next few days its going to be sunny with freezing temps. You should look forward to michigan summer though. I love it. Sometimes it gets too humid for my taste, but hey if you lived in Florida, this wont feel bad at all.

Yeah I'm up here right now for my interview tomorrow.

lol, I hope you brought some warm clothes. Dont worry though, they wont take you outside unless you have to interview at the DMC, and even then its a very short walk (50 feet) from Scott Hall. Good luck and relax cause the interview is laid back. I might see you and the other interviewees at the cafeteria all dressed up and looking good 🙂

Accepted last week. Interviewed in December. I have yet to receive any official info in the mail. Anyone know when second look is?

I have to agree with what Dadodeca and sunshine have said.

I came to Wayne because of the strong clinicals and the location. I figured I am in charge of my own destiny, so if there are some bad courses, and bad profs, it's on me to learn what I need to know. I can do that.

As DaDodeca said: Some of the classes force you to memorize the phonebook without teaching you how to read a map.

For those classes, the exams are similar to being asked to recite John Smith's address and phone number. While on the wards I feel we will be asked to go to John Smith's house. Hopefully by then we know how to drive or call a cab.

However not every class is like this, and many of them are well taught and good.

As for competitiveness, I believe Sunshine has it spot on. Some people will complain about an 'easy' exam with a high mean, and them not honoring because of it. They are the minority. Most people are friendly and I have never seen anyone purposefully sabotage others.

In regards to the 'special study guides', the administration promises to be taking care of this. I do not necessarily agree that all the necessary and proper steps are being taken, and I do believe this is a sign that the administration is resistant to making changes to the exams that are necessary, but as for deciding which school to attend, I do not believe this should factor in. Individuals make their own luck, and that will be true at any school. Every school have courses that are well taught, and courses that aren't as strong. At any school you choose to go to, if you work hard (enough) you will do well. So many factors go into making a choice on which school to go to that how a school structures their exams should not make or break any one school.

Second look is this Saturday (April 2nd).

I think they specifically invited those who are holding on to more than one acceptance -- at least that's what the flyer made it sound like.

Hope that helps.

Bleh, well I have multiple acceptances now 😎 . I'm going to the other school this weekend for second look. Bummer as I really need to see Wayne again given all the negative energy flowing from it as of late.

of the interviewed people from in state how many do you guys think get in?

Wish I knew, because Wayne is my #1. But my school starts in Summer, so I cant wait around much longer.

Withdrew my seat this morning
Good luck guys! :luck:
