II confirmed for Nov 15!!! So excited to visit New Orleans for the first time.
If you interviewed here already, could I get some tips on hotels, visits, and how the interview went? Thanks everyone.

If you're classified as a resident it might not come up in the interview, but if they show you as a non-resident you'll probably get asked about it.

i was accepted (37 / 3.9 / in state) and did not complete the essay. looking back, i think it's good idea to do though. there's really no reason not to...if anything just to state what about LSU-NO attracts you to the school.

my essay like that for other schools has been ~300-400 words, enough to touch on something you didn't get to express in AMCAS
 
What was this essay about? It's been so long I cant remember doing one. Probably didn't.
 
it was just a letter of reasonable length to comment on how the adcom could assess you better.
 
oh, yeah, no. I really didn't have anything else to say, even though my pre-med advisor told me to do every "optional" thing.
 
Does any one know when they cash your "hold place" check? I was accepted early decision and sent it in a while ago but the $ still hasn't been taken from my account. I guess it's not a big deal, but do they not cash until May or something like that?
 
How long does it take to get confirmation email for interview? I called on Monday and still nothing yet. I don't know what hotel to book so it's not far from school and expensive. Any ideas? thanks

i didnt get an email with details about the interview until the week before.
I use hotwire.com and priceline.com to book hotels for all my interviews. hotwire doesnt always tell you exactly what hotel you're booking, that's how they're so cheap. I wouldn't book anything under 2.5 stars 'cause then you might get like a super 8 or something kinda sketchy.
Use biddingfortravel.com to see what other people have gotten hotels for in the area.
the best way to do it is to narrow it down to an area around the med school on hotwire, see what you can definitely get a room for on that site, then go to priceline, look in the same area, and start bidding around the same price as people got the same level hotels for according to biddingfortravel. If your first bid gets rejected, you can add areas that don't include the hotel level you're looking for, and it will let you bid again for the same area and same level because you've added another one. Or you can go up a level. If your bidding doesnt go well and you keep getting rejected, you can always go to hotwire and still get a cheap room.
sorry, its a little complicated but you can get really nice rooms at like half price.

It shouldn't take that long. I would call them and check to make sure. They usually send a receipt in the mail to you as well to show that they cashed it or received it. One of two anyway.
 
Is it a bad sign if my file has been complete since August and I have yet to receive an interview invite?
 
I applied to UC Davis, UCLA, LSU, UT Southwestern, Baylor, and Texas A&M. I got an early decision to Davis. Accept or not to accept?

Accept. Always accept. Bear in mind that you are just reserving a spot. You can accept offers from all 6 schools if you get them. In April you have to actually make a choice, but the worst that can happen is you lose a deposit later. 😀

If you do early decision isn't there some sort of provision that if you get accepted there you have to go there? Or at least I think it's considered bad form to reject an early decision.

I thought that applying to Early Decision means you can ONLY apply to that ONE school until a decision is made. Then, if not accepted in early decision, you can apply to other others but you are a little late in the cycle. Hence, the downside of applying early decision if you don't get in - and why they tell you to think carefully before choosing it.

Secondly, your status is "Resident" and not "pre-medical". So if you're actually applying to medical school, you would: a) know that early decision applicants can only apply to that one school and are locked into that school until the early decision is made, and b) not be a "resident".... Otherwise, you're probably a troll.

The residence hall is awful. Super convenient, super cheap, but still awful. I live in them.

To everyone on the wait-list, DO NOT fret. I got in off the wait-list. I know it's awful, but just be patient.

My hold-place check was cashed after school started.

We aren't ranked because rankings are based off of amount of research. There is research done here, but I don't think its anywhere near the level of schools like Duke and JHU.

Can you be more specific about the residence hall? what's awful about it?
Did you get accepted to shreveport as well? if so what made you choose one over the other?

It's really old and really dirty. The lobby is nice but the rooms are awful. Though, if you're looking to spend the least amount of money possible, you cannot beat it. Plus, leaving at 7:58am for an 8:00am class is amazing.

I got wait-listed and accepted into both Shreve and NO. I chose NO because the facilities are way nicer and also because it's not in Shreveport. NO also accepted me earlier.

Yeah, honestly, having spent two years as a giftie in Natchitoches... you just do not want to be in that corner of the state. It's basically South Arkansas. Good luck finding a decent shrimp poboy. 😱

Sorry to go off topic folks but I have a quick question. I got waitlisted last week, do I have to wait all the way till the advocates meeting in February for my next shot at getting in? or, Do I have a chance to get in everytime the committee meets after each round of interviews?

supposedly your "advocate" is supposed to keep pushing for you in later meetings. But they also said most people move off the waitlist in like, march or something. Best not to agonize over it and just don't expect anything til at least next year, then it'll be a nice surprise if you hear sooner.

From what I remember during the orientation at the interview, you have the potential of getting a letter after any comittee meeting. :luck: However, it's most likely that you won't hear anything until February. If you don't hear anything it's not bad though because they make most of their acceptance decisions at that February meeting.
 
Everybody just chilll. If you are good enough to be accepted, there's a good chance you're going to be accepted. I'm in school there now, and it is definitely a long and tiring process to get there. If you do get put on the waitlist, don't stay up all night worrying about it. You'll probably die waiting. Medical school admissions committees are strange, there's no way to predict what they are going to do. You could get off the waitlist at the next meeting, or you could be on it until May. Oh, by the way, the out of state applications they are taking this year are not solely for MD/PhD students. They've opened up the general application pool to OOS students, and will be accepting up to 40 out of state MD students this year. They gave us the run-down on this stuff a million times trying to prepare us for when we give tours, so if you are dying of curiosity then just send me a message. Otherwise, just chill and enjoy your last year of freedom. I promise you, no classes you can possibly take in undergrad are going to prepare you for this. Everyone comes in unprepared, but this is hardcore school. No matter how ready you think you are, you never will be truly ready to jump headfirst into the fire, because that's what it is. They'll tell you that they are deliberately throwing you to the dogs, but you'll survive. You'll be looking back on the application process in a year and thinking how insane you were to believe that THAT was the high stress part. Enjoy yourselves!!

I often hear this but don't quite understand why; when I think of nightmare classes I think of things like digital signal processing, differential equations, physical chemistry... anything biological is more like a vast, yet finite, amount of material that more or less makes intuitive sense.

Volume really. The material isn't harder in a "challenge your mind" kind of way. It's a different kind of hard. Sometimes you come to the realization that you've been studying non-stop for 2+ weeks (crunch time) and still don't know the material as well as you think you should know it.

Path - Heart (Congenital, Atherosclerosis, Angina, Ischemia, etc.), Head and Neck, GI (Oral, Esophagus, Stomach, SI, Colon, Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder), Dermpath/Skin, Bones, Joints, Soft Tissue, Pediatric pathology, Hematology thrown in at the end. Basically every relevant disease within those categories including neoplasia as well. Includes identification of gross/histo specimens. Also, cumulative.

MIP - Virology (all RNA/DNA viruses), intro Bacteriology, Antibiotics, Antivirals

SPM - lots of stuff.

Roughly 5-6 weeks of lecture.

Whats up guys. Lurked here for a while and figured I'd join eventually, might as well do it today.

Congrats to all those accepted! I interviewed yesterday and feel pretty good about it. Have you all applied for housing? (that is if you're gonna live in the res hall)

There is... click on Interview Feedback on the top SDN bar, then search All Allopathic Medical Schools, find LSU-NO, click on "See survey results", then scroll down to the "Questions" tab, and voila!

Apply now, don't wait until you get in. There's about a year long waitlist for one bedroom apartments in the res hall.
 
I plan on mailing my app tomorrow. Is the list of 2 bedrooms shorter? I'm thinking that I want a roomate......Finding one is another story
 
Doubles are shorter, but not sure by how much. I know people who got them coming into first year

Does anyone know what month the pre-matriculation program starts? my tour guide was talking briefly but highly recommended doing it
