Interviewing here in the morning. Really excited to see what Tech has to offer! Social was fun and the students seem really down to earth and love the school.
I have a quick question, since you interviewed most of the Texas school. Is there a status page on line to ck for Glaveston (Dallas) and Houston location?
thanks

Not that I know of. Most of those schools do not notify you of anything unless you get an interview. UTSW and UTH do send out confirmation emails that tell you that they have your completed application in hand but all it means is that they are reviewing you not that you are for sure going to get an interview.

My interviews at Tech were alright but I was definitely not feeling Lubbock all that much. I think that even the students at the student panel were not enthusiastic about the alternate campuses and it seems like almost everyone wants to stay in Lubbock. Some people end up with their last choice campus in the Permian Basin and have to go through an appeals process that only takes into count marriages or children. If you end up going to Permian Basin it also seems like you will be traveling a ton to do rotations which is not ideal for me.

Funny side note: on our way back to the airport we saw someone that had a horse IN THE PASSENGER SEAT of the truck! Can't get more country than that lol.

For OOS, they're notifying on Monday right?

And ya, Lubbock isn't the greatest. But it's a college town and I haven't grown up yet, so being in a town with 30,000 coeds doesn't sound too bad to me. 😉

Yeah Monday is when OOS begin to get acceptances. They mentioned that every OOS applicant that is accepted gets a scholarship so that they only have to pay in state which seems like a big plus for the school. Not that it matters to me since i'm in-state...

Just want to chime in- I'm an MS3 and Amarillo was my first choice for campus assignments which I got. I am absolutely loving our campus and so glad I am up here. The student services staff knew all of our names when we came to orientation (literally on day 1) and are really amazing, the faculty have loved teaching in each of the rotations I have been on, and I really have enjoyed the residents here.

Last year almost everyone who went through the appeals process got their location changed which was good- and several people got a switch to be with a bf/gf and were not married.

Lubbock is Lubbock lol, I really liked having all the amenities of the undergrad campus available during my first years- sports events, arts, the amazing student center, etc. but I am much happier in Amarillo this year.

In the end you need to go where you feel you will be happy but I couldn't imagine doing medical school anywhere else, Tech feels like a family to me and I really am glad I made the choice to go there as an out of state student.

I have to agree with justdoit on this one - I'm sorry you got that impression, but that's really not the impression I've gotten while being here at all. A lot of students do put Lubbock as their first choice, but many students also choose the other campuses as their first choice. The students in Permian Basin received quite a few perks - scholarships, funding for conferences, etc. - so that wasn't last choice for many of them. Now that they are there I have heard fabulous things about the training they are receiving and the amount of one-on-one attention they get from their attendings. I haven't heard anyone complain about Amarillo or Permian Basin at all.

You have to remember that the students on the panel likely haven't been to the other campuses. The first and second years may favor Lubbock at that point, but there's a bias in that since they haven't yet been to the other campuses. The third and fourth years on the panel obviously favor Lubbock, because that's where they ended up staying.

I wish we could Skype in some students from other campuses during the panel so they could give a more first hand account of the other places. I'll bring that up with the Dr. Peck next time I'm up there if y'all think it would be a beneficial addition to the panel.

At my interview day, they did set up skype for the panel so we could talk to students at the other two campuses. However, only one student showed up from one of the campuses and no students from the other campus

Do you know if they notify OOS by email or snail mail??

How did you do? Did you get in?

I just wonder if they send out acceptances early and rejections later. I still haven't heard...😕

Me neither.... I hope this isn't a bad sign 😕

For those of you that got in, does it say so under admissions offer on the secondary website???

Congrats guys! Were yall oos or special programs Texas residents?

So, what if on the secondary website it just says, "The Secondary Application is now closed"? Am I looking in the wrong place?

Hmm. Nevermind. I just spoke with someone in admissions. She said that they started sending out OOS acceptances today (obviously), and they don't have a waiting list. But, she said, they keep sending out acceptances until the match date at the beginning of February. So, my guess is that if you haven't heard yet, you're on the non-existent wait list.

Tsov tom.

I called them around the same time and got the same info

When you spoke with admission, did they say anything about dual degree programs? Nobody has mentioned anything but oos.

Do they send out flat out rejections at all??

No they didn't. That's a good question, though. Let me know if you find out.

I didn't ask about dual degree, sorry

I don't know, but they told me that they only send out acceptances until the spring after the match. That's when they come out with the waitlist

Those were good questions so I called and asked them.

Dual Degree: Acceptances for dual degrees were allowed to start being handed out today. She said you may get accepted to one degree before the other. But it sounds like it's the same dealio as the regular MD degree.

Rejections: She said they do not hand out rejections. Because it is a rolling admissions, they will continue to hand out acceptances as more become available, I guess.

A good thing to know: She said that the people that were accepted have 2 weeks from their acceptance to respond. If they do not respond, then their spot is forfeited to another applicant. So, she said that in two weeks there will likely be more acceptances handed out.

This is so stressful.

Thanks for the additional info.

+eleventy million on the bolded part. I loved my visit to Lubbock

I asked specifically about the special programs and was told they sent out most of them, but had not completed the FMAT applications. I was told they would finish these this week, maybe tomorrow. The whole staff at tech is very nice and helpful, even more reason to love the school.

Special programs like MD/PhD and MD/MBA? Do you know if they filled the seats for the MD/MBA one? 😕

I asked specifically about the FMAT because that's what I applied for. From what I could tell, they already sent out acceptances for MD/MBA MD/JD MD/PhD. Don't worry. It's only the first round of acceptances.

My brother texted me that they had a crazy dust storm today, Lubbock or hate it.

Lubbock or hate it!! Ha ha ha!!

That's the craziest junk I've ever seen!

I'm flying to Lubbock on 11/10 for the next day interview. I don't have a car and this is my first time in town. I'm planning on going to the social and now try to figure out how to get there. The car rental fee is so expensive because I'm 21. If anybody (fellow interviewee driving to Lubbock or current medical students) can offer me a ride, I would really appreciate your help.

You should consider staying with a student host if you haven't already signed up for it. My host was nice enough to take me from the airport directly to the social and then he even took me to dinner. They're usually really nice people.

Would you happen to know when they announce early admissions/decisions and regular decisions?:xf:

Early decisions have already been handed out, I think theres a guy on this thread who has gotten in.

Regular decisions for all Tx schools except Baylor are 11/15. Baylor started last week.

these are for in state, I think OOS acceptances have already started going out.

Dude, you posted this same question on multiple texas school threads. If you've applied to Texas schools, the rules of when acceptances can be announced are listed on TMDSAS.

Also, if your status is "Medical Student", you should either: a) know the dates of acceptance, or b) got accepted elsewhere but don't start until 2012, making you still "pre-medical".

Not to mention, it looks like you're upping your post count to continue as the DMN troll on the UTSW thread.

lol i was thinking the exact same thing

Has this school shown up on anyone's rank list? How long does that usually take? Only one of the schools I interviewed at is up so far, but this was actually my first interview.

Yeah... it took a little while. I don't know how long since I only look at TMDSAS once a month or so. They will all be there by Jan, which is what matters.

does texas tech have a summer research program for medical students?

My apologies if this has been asked a million times but I am interviewing here soon and trying to figure out how to schedule my flights... After the interview is there a bus that will take you back to the airport from the school? And if so, what time did any of you actually arrive at the airport when you finished interview day? Thanks a ton.

When I interviewed no one needed to go to the airport, but one of the current med students kept asking us because he was in charge of driving the van if anyone did need to go.

Yes, during the spring of MSI you will get numerous emails from faculty seeking students for research- if you decide to do research you get a stipend for the summer from the school (not sure on the amount as I did research at another school because I was interested in a very specific sub specialty).

Other summer programs include preceptorships that are paid in FM, Peds, and I believe IM too... also there is an ER preceptorship where you work a certain number of shifts over the summer- all of these except ER can be done anywhere in the state as it's a state program. They also have international trips- people in my class (MS3) could go to either Central America with one of the faculty to work in a clinic or to Spain for a medical Spanish program- both of those met your Medical Spanish requirement. People also went to other countries with private organizations.
