Oh, and last year, 2534 students applied, 372 were interviewed and 267 acceptances were offered to fill the 176 positions. Of the 132 students placed on the alternate list, 69 were offered a position at UASOM and 26 of the remaining alternates were accepted elsewhere.

...Finally, can you fill out fafsa for a school before you have been accepted/for multiple schools? And is it mandatory to include your parent's income information for UAB? Also, are merit-based scholarships applied for or automatically awarded at UAB and South?

Thanks for any help or comments! Sorry for such a long post.

You can totally designate a school that you haven't been accepted at to receive your FAFSA. I did that with a school where I was still pending a decision and it didn't seem to impact me one way or another.

As for as putting down your parents' income, I believe it's highly encouraged if you're younger than 30 (even if you're married or independent). I think it plays into need-based scholarships, but I'm not 100% sure.

I think you have to fill out a specific form to be eligible for scholarships at UAB. It's a simple application where you list your career goals, ECs, awards, and submit your FAFSA. There may be scholarships that exist outside of that application process.

A friend of mine's friend was accepted from the upper third today!! The list is moving 🙂

wtf already?!? I guess uab is on top of their game this year lol hopefully they go all the way through to the lower tier 🙂

Wow that's awesome! Definitely good news for everyone if there is a stream of acceptances over the next few weeks. And thanks, Ebola!

Congratulations to one of you. You will soon be receiving my acceptance. I enjoyed South's small class size, friendliness, campus etc and will be going there instead. Good luck to all of you, no matter where you end up!

Enjoy South! It's a great school. And thanks! 😀

You guys are lucky. Last year the wait list didn't come out until early April and, due to some transitions in the administration, progress was slow on sending out acceptances off the list. A huge burst got in on May 20th, including myself. You can look back at last years thread for my paranoid analysis at every juncture. I know how some of you must feel, and I'd be happy to help by answering any questions you might have.

i guess i have two. first is there anyway we could affect our rank on the waiting list other than curing cancer/getting arrested lol? I updated uab regularly before the list came out, but I dunno if those updates matter anymore.

second do you know how many people get in from middle tier usually? like is it 1/3 or 3/4 etc...

Absolutely no way to affect your position on the waitlist. Not sure why getting arrested or curing cancer would affect your spot. Ha.

It's different for every year, you can go back and look at the old threads (probably back until 2004ish) and see how many people got in off the waitlist. Sometimes they make it halfway through the middle tier, sometimes they dip into the upper part is the third tier. There's really no way to know. I would be cautiously optimistic if I were in the middle tier.

I'm definitely glad it seems to be going much better than last year. It sucks almost the entire upper tier had to wait until 5/20. I just wish we had more applicants on here this year so we could have a better idea of how things are moving. So does it actually seems like almost half your class came in off the waitlist like people have said in the past?

Truth be told, I haven't really discussed wait list matters with any of my classmates, but I know from my experience last year that they got about halfway through the middle tier, which would make a little under half the class waitlisters. I hesitate to say this, but the trends bear out the fact that the entire upper tier is offered admission at some point. The lower third is rarely used, but a few were taken two years ago. As long as UAB has continued to never have more than 176 (class size unless they've expanded it) admissions pending at a given time, there will be significant waitlist movement compared to schools that have an over-acceptance buffer.

early april is usually when the waitlist come out right? anyone know why its so soon this year?

Good morning. Just accepted off upper tier!

I'm coming to Birmingham next week to find an apartment... Can anyone reccomend places I should look? I know nothing about the area.

Good luck to everyone still waiting. I think it will be a good year for the waitlist... last year was brutal.

Congrats!!! And it's good to see movement this early!

congrats nossan
check out Crown on 10th
University Housing (fully furnished but has lot of undergrads)
Cityville (fairly new)
or Bristol (condos)
all these above are downtown near or on campus

Mountain brook, Southside, A few places downtown by the hospital. Those are good areas to start looking. Avoid 280 like the plague, unless you don't mind 45 minute commutes, then are are alot of good options.

Homewood is also doable, those specific places mention above are all good options, minus university housing.

Seriously...COME ON SDN'ers. If there is anyone who sees this thread who is on the waitlist and who hasn't checked in yet, please do so soon. Thanks!

I've been being a lurker, but I'll help add to the list. I'm in the upper third of the alternate list.

I'm on the middle third. I've also heard of another one or two that have been accepted off the top tier this week.

Upper third... Let's hope that all the waitlist acceptances keep up.

Thank yall!!! It'll really help us get an idea of how many are on each tier and the size of the waitlist!

middle third here too! hopefully this movement continues!

I am lower third as well...again. After doing everything asked of me after being lower third last year, including taking 28 biology hours over summer and fall with a 3.85 gpa. (I majored in Finance from UA, so not much science background last go-round).

Has anyone else had a similar experience of doing exactly what was asked of you from Nathan Smith and not having any positive results to show for it?

I reapplied (first time lower third) and I was put on the middle third the second time around. I was pretty pissed, but it worked out. That's a tough situation you are in though, I would consider trying to set up a meeting with Dr. Smith (is he even the dean still?).

I remember there was a guy 3 or 4 years back who was in a similar situation as you, and somehow he fell through the cracks, and they wound up offering him a spot. I'm sure they don't do that often, but if there truly was a mistake and you don't have any red flags it might be worth a shot.

You can check back at the old threads, again either 3 or 4 years ago, and probably find out his exact situation.

may 15th is the date where an applicant can only hold one acceptance right? since uab is taking people from the waitlist already i got the feeling that they gonna take a bunch of middle tier this year lol

This is correct and part of the reason the list began moving like crazy around that time last year (especially considering no/few acceptances had gone out between when the waitlist came out and May 20th.) If I'm not mistaken, there is also a date in mid April when scholarship decisions are finalized. Applicants may be holding an acceptance until the know if they will get a scholarship, and, if they don't, they will free up spots after that date. If the upper tier is already seeing movement, refer to the thread from 2 years ago for an idea of how things might go because last year was atypical.

So if you aren't accepted until after April 15th (scholarship deadline), are you just ineligible to apply for scholarships? I guess coming off the waitlist you probably wouldn't get one anyway?

That's a good question and one to which I have no answer. I was accepted May 20th, and I never had the option to apply for scholarships.

Upper Third.
3rd time applying, moved from lower third to upper third this year. Continued to take classes and worked in the hospital for a year.

Congrats to all those that have been recently accepted, and a future congrats to many of you that will be in the near future.

For those that plan on going to UAB for sure, and have also been accepted to other schools (particularly USA), could you notify those other schools. I feel like a jerk for writing that, but every day makes a big difference for alot of us.

Thank you sirs and madams

Any news this week, guys? I guess I'm a little too optimistic about the premature movement of the list.

Did anyone else get that e-mail today and freak out because you thought it was a letter of acceptance? I definitely did. The worst let down...ever.

😱+pity++pissed+:wow:

Yes...and it makes me think there may not be any acceptances for a while

Yeah! I got it too. I know though that when the acceptance email comes in the subject of the email it will say acceptance.

Yes...and it makes me think there may not be any acceptances for a while
I don't know about that. In the email when we were told about the waitlist it said we would be receiving information soon about orientation and information about matriculation requirements

I got the email as well, and I think it is probably more of a reminder than anything else.

It probably has absolutely no connection to when they send acceptances..I just have a bad gut feeling ha. Probably because I'm more of a pessimist about the whole situation
