Oh right, I suppose that would have been helpful information haha. less than a month ago. 🙂

actually I just want to know right now. Whether I got in or not, I don't care anymore, I just need some peace of mind!
But I guess this should help me get something done instead of checking my email every min.

sounds like it.

FWIW, on my interview day, they told us the next committee meeting would be solely devoted to discussion of MD/PhD candidates and we shouldn't expect to hear back until January. Just something to keep in mind. :luck::xf:
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but did you mean MD/PhD candidates wouldn't hear back until January? (I wasn't sure about your "we" use whether you are regular MD or MD/PhD!)

Thanks!

Oh no, that's a good point. Me, MD/PhD? 🤣🤣🤣 I'd probably be sitting at 0 IIs if I had applied that route. 🙄 Nah, I'm a MD only applicant. No idea when the MD/PhD kids will hear back, but I'd imagine before January. Fingers crossed for all of us, MD and MD/PhDs! :xf:

OOS Interview invite!! Does anyone know what percent of OOS applicants get invited for an interview and get accepted? Thanks!!! 🙂

I am pretty sure it's around 40%. Pretty good, but not the best. I received an interview invite today also! For whatever reason, their secondary site doesn't give me any options to select an interview date though! 😡 Any idea why? Are you having the same issue?

OOS Interview invite!! Does anyone know what percent of OOS applicants get invited for an interview and get accepted? Thanks!!! 🙂
Fall 2008 Admissions Statistics Total admissions data : 2895 applied, 665 interviewed, 290 were accepted, 148 enrolled
In-state admissions data: 365 applied, 268 interviewed, 133 were accepted, 98 enrolled
Out-of-state admissions data : 2530 applied, 397 interviewed, 157 were accepted, 50 enrolled
Women's admissions data: 1224 applied, 276 interviewed, 135 were accepted, 71 enrolled
Minority admissions data: 943 applied, 215 interviewed, 86 were accepted, 36 enrolled

2010's OOS was 3064 (applied) --> 412 (interviewed) --> 158 (accepted) --> 50 (enrolled)
Thanks for the update... what about in state?
So no acceptances were given out today?

I should clarify. I have the "interview" tab, but when I go to select a date from the drop down menu, none are available for me to pick. It only says "select date". Is anybody else having/had this issue?

But doesn't the committee meet once a week? If you interviewed a month ago, wouldn't the committee meet the week after about the MD/PhDs and then continue the following weeks with the MD applicants?

where does one find such helpful information as this?

hmm thats strange. When I looked at the drop down menu three dates were available and the first one was filled already so i had to pick the next one. But if you dont see any options at all you should call them and ask because these stops are filling up quickly. And thanks guys for the useful information!!!😀

Yeah I did call them and they are talking to IT about it now :scared:. Kind of bummed because you're right, they fill up quickly and I want to set my date asap!

I see you guys have been curious about admission statistics. If you want a profile of the current M1 class, major breakdown, GPA, MCAT, age, etc. go to http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/md/profile/. During orientation week they gave us the admission info for our class as well:

Total applicants: 3,555 ---> Matriculated: 148 (including MSTP)
In-state: 357 ---> Matriculated: 99
Out of state: 3,198 ---> Matriculated: 43

They didn't give us how many interviewed or were accepted (which I know is what you really want to know) but I hope this helps a bit!

They figured it out and I scheduled for January 6th. I wanted it earlier, but that's all that was available. Darn errors! Mildly frustrated that students got dates earlier than me simply because their website didn't work for me (I tried all internet browsers, different computers, and different internet networks. In the end, they had to do something in IT department to fix it.)

I understand where you are coming from that sucks. But hey it can still workout if they are interviewing you that late they obviously anticipate that they will have spots open! 🙂

Yeah, can't do much about it now! Oh well, I'm confident. January isn't THAT late though. I would be much more worried if it was in March or April. Do you know how aggressive the rolling admissions at Carver is? I know at schools like U of Mich it's VERY aggressive.

Congrats on the interview! Because of the "final pool" at Iowa, I believe that even if you interview on the last day, you will still have a chance to be reviewed and considered. BTW, Iowa ends its interview season in January( late January that is, so your not late as you said)

Thanks a bunch! I appreciate it. I read about the final pool, but I do not fully understand it. Would you mind clarifying exactly what it entails?

I might have an opportunity to move my interview up to November 30th, which is 1 day before another one of my interviews. It would be a tough couple days, but I can handle it all. Do you think that one month difference between November 30th and January 6th could really make that large of a difference?

Thanks again!

Okay let me summarize what they told us during my interview day at Iowa. They said that after we interview here our files will be placed in a "pile". Each week, someone will draw 25 apps randomly from that pile. These 25 apps will be reviewed by a subcommittee ( about 5 people) for a vote. Depending on the number of votes each app gets, it will either be placed in the final pool or will be sent to the full committee for a full review. the full committee will either accept it or place it in the final pool. They repeat the process basically every Tuesday. So you can think of the final pool as a second chance, however, you will be competing with hundreds of applicants for a limited number of seats. When they review the final pool, they will either reject, accept or place the apps on the waiting list.
I believe that Iowa's rolling admission goes through Jan.15th. People who interview afterward are automatically placed in the final pool. It is to your advantage to interview as early as possible to have the opportunity to compete with 24 apps only during the rolling admission process rather than with hundreds of applicants in the final pool. During the rolling process, the worst thing that can happen is that your application will be placed in the final pool for another chance ( no rejections are given out at this stage). Don't lose that chance if you can interview in November.
One more thing, be ready for a pleasant shock on your Interview day. I liked everything about Iowa and Iowa is my number one choice by a clear mile!. The interview was stress free, the CBL was fun! have an answer ready to why medicine because it will be your first question! and good luck

My memory of the details is a little hazy, but it can't actually be completely random, can it? I assumed there was just variation in how long various adcom members took to go through their weekly file allotment or something. I guess it *could* be random, but that seems like a needlessly weird way to do things.

I believe she said that they draw the files randomly. I just reviewed my notes I took during the interview day and it seems like she said it is random.

This has been discussed on this thread but I just wanted to clarify, the CBL interview portion the group of applicants is presented with a case and we must all work together to reach a hypothesis about the patient and his/her symptoms etc. ? How many are in each group? Perhaps someone could shed some light on this...hopefully I'm not totally missing the mark here.

That is right🙂

Unless they have heavily changed it from last year, seriously, this is NOT a stressful thing! It is meant to be fun and informative and show you what CBL is like.

There will be probably between 4 and 8 students in your CBL group, and a facilitator, usually a student who is in the teaching track or an MD/PhD student. You will read a case piece by piece (turning pages in a booklet so that you can't look ahead at the info) and "House" it up on a whiteboard. Don't worry if you don't know anything, or don't think you know anything! 1 - you probably do, and 2 - someone else will. It really is just meant to give you more of a feel of the school. Did they tell you they were judging you on this portion, because I never got that impression. It wasn't an "interview" last year...it really is just for your benefit.

Heh, I just can't imagine them doing so!

You are reviewed during the CBL, but it is a very basic plays well with others vs gets into a shouting match over every detail evaluation.

Thanks for the clarification! I hope I can get my interview moved up. I am currently scheduled for January 6th, so still in the rolling admissions portion. Still, November 30th would be a HUGE improvement!

Does anyone know how quickly the interview invites will be drying up?

If I'm able to gain any information at my interview on Wednesday I would be more than happy to pass it onto the SDN group, stay posted

Would you mind also asking if the "random 25" evaluated every week or so means that not all people who interview before December will have a chance to be evaluated before being dumped into the final pool?

Good luck on Wednesday either way!!!! :luck::xf: Hope you love it as much as I did 😍

While you're there would you mind telling them to go ahead and accept me so I can cancel all of my other interviews and pending applications? :-D That would be great! Thanks.

Much appreciated, you are truly a scholar and a gentleman.

Has anyone that's been accepted heard anything from the school after they received their acceptance letter? I haven't gotten a single email or letter from them, just wondering if any more information had been sent out...

Good luck to those still waiting and interviewing. It really is a long process but a little bit of patience can go a long way.

Also, has anyone started a facebook page for the class of 2016? I tried searching without success.

Besides the packet with the acceptance letter, I received one other letter detailing how to access ISIS. If you are already at U of Iowa then you probably wouldnt get that letter since you'd already have access. I don't think there is a facebook group yet, perhaps you should create it Midwestern. 🙂

Alright well I gathered as much information as I could for all of you...so here it is:

1. They interview a total of 42 students per week, and have been going at it since mid september. Which means its been about 10 weeks of interviews x 42 students/wk = 420 interviews have been conducted thus far, and they invite 750 to interview each season. They are offering 152 spots in this year's matriculating class. So it looks like they are just over halfway on interviews, not including the ones they have sent out, so I would guess there are roughly 250 II's left in the season.

2. The "Rolling Admissions" schedule will continue until the end of January, as do Interviews. When I asked if applicants who interview in late January will have a chance to be reviewed prior to being placed into the final pool, it sounded as though each applicant is indeed reviewed prior to just being thrown into the final pool -- but there was a fair amount of confusion on my part with the final pool business. As far as the randomness of the files the committee selects for review, its just as random as everyone that has posted previously thought it was -- applicants are reviewed at random. The Adcom is composed of roughly 30 members broken down into smaller groups that evaluate applicants then present them whenever the admissions committee meets.

3. All of you should expect a lull in II's and Admissions decisions. The AdCom is taking a multi-week hiatus during xmas time. They have families too, remember this 🙂

4. Everyone should definitively know their admissions status by March 15 --- so hang on tight ladies and gents. Their wait-list is ranked, and we were encouraged to accept our spot on the wait-list because there is movement.

Hope all of this helps, and if I got any of this wrong please feel free to correct me. Good luck to the rest of you. I had a great experience at Iowa, and definitely would love to attend their institution. Anyone interviewing in the future weeks/months, relax and enjoy your interview day. The CBL session at the end was a blast -- don't stress over it, it's meant to be fun. Although the group I had knew a pretty decent amount about various health conditions but everyone has a chance to contribute. Best of luck to you all 👍

Yeah I think we need a fb page, too. Someone make one and tell us about it here!

About a week after I got my acceptance letter in the mail, I also got a letter telling me that I'm out of state. That was basically the gist of the info it imparted. Made me giggle.

Interviewing here on Monday... Anyone care to share some advice? My only other interview so far has been at UW-Madison. How different are the interviews? What should I expect?

Thank you for the info! However, did they tell you if they give out acceptances every Tuesday, I mean we know that they meet every Tuesday but do they send out acceptances every week too? The reason I'm asking is because the last two Tuesdays no one posted anything about acceptances here. It is either that they didn't like any application they reviewed, or they don't give out acceptances every week or maybe even that the people that got in are not members here...

So I interviewed md/phd here, beginning of Nov. Post-interview all of the candidates go through several rounds of 'committee review' through the medical college and then the mstp program itself. At the interview we were told that the first round of acceptances are expected to go out sometime this week, and I'm wondering if that, in combination with Thanksgiving holiday, is the hold-up for medical college acceptances. I e-mailed the program yesterday to see if the mstp first-round acceptances have gone out yet this week, but have not heard anything yet. I'll let you know what they say.

That is some excellent information, thank you. From the sounds of it not much in the way of IIs are left, and its going to be a bit of a wait to find that out, but it is very nice to know what to expect. Best of luck on getting accepted.

Thanks for the info, GoZags! As strange as the "random batch" application review process is, it's slightly comforting to know that I still have a shot at a pre-final pool acceptance.

I did not ask about how that works, sorry. I'm sure if you sent an email to the admissions office they could clarify that for you. I poked my head in to talk to them yesterday and they are all very welcoming and truly dedicated to helping applicants (me being one of them, had some issues with my secondary app) - they were clear in that they are more than happy to help us out.

I just called the admissions office and they said that they will continue to meet every week this month except for the week after Christmas. So, there will continue to be acceptances going out, unless I interpreted that incorrectly. I'm glad you enjoyed your experience! I loved that school and I'm sure I'll see you around so we can talk more about it. Such an awesome school! :-D Now that Nevada got rid of their OOS-In-state tuition averaging I would rather go to Iowa. :-D

OOS Interview coming up on Dec 9th! Everyone says that the structured portion is three questions: why med, how to resolve conflict, what if med not an option, rising costs of healthcare...any others that shocked you that we could prepare for?? Hope it goes as well as everyone else's feedback!! :xf:
