Hmm are you sure? I was under the impression that UK screened all out of state applications.

That's what I meant by suggesting there are min test scores. I think there are minimums, but personally I think of screening more as glancing at the whole file, not just state ties and test scores. I mean, if (IF) there are minimums for a school and you apply anyway, you basically just donated to the school, right? Like those schools that have a policy against taking OOS students -- you can still apply, but you don't meet their recs. Guess it's just the semantics of what you think "screening" means -- evaluating to see if they meet your requirements, or taking a not-super-in-depth look at the whole file before deciding to offer a secondary.

This late in the cycle, a 31 MCAT from Canada would have to have like,"delivered-babies-in-Africa-(with-AIDS)-while-I-was-doing-my-PhD-in-social-sciences-and-history-of-medicine"-level EC's to get into a school that's an in-state heavy as UK. Sorry, but they do love re-apps. And the secondary fee is cheap so at least you're not out $125 or anything.

Some food for thought for out-of-state applicants:

Tuition:
.$67,786 (only an estimate. subject to increase)
Living expenses: $24,842
Annual budget: 92,628

Documentation of funds for first 2 years in an escrow account is required prior to matriculation. This amounts to $185,256.00.

hmm.........

False. OOS tuition = $58,553.

Interesting... The Assistant Director of Admissions said $67,786 on my acceptance letter. I hope you're right though.

That's an ungodly amount of money for OOS. I hope I'm right too. On UK's website, plus all of the paper material I've ever received from UK, OOS is stated around 58k. Unless they've ramped it up substantially in the past couple of months....geeze louise. Let's hope not.

I emailed them after getting the acceptance letter since I was surprised too.

It is estimated at 67k for next year as of now.

wow that's not what I wanted to hear lol
But thanks for your clarification.

This is just a guess but historically it's international students that need proof of available funds, not out of state US citizens since it is assumed that federal funding will cover their tuition.

That's what I thought too. As a Canadian, it is nice to be accepted somewhere so early, but tuition and living at close to 100k a year is insane 😱. I don't know how I will even find more than 250k. I might have to rethink this whole med school thing unfortunately. Here's hoping I get into DMS, where tuition is about 47k...

anyone going to the informational meeting on jan. 7th? I'm looking forward to learning about the school without an interview looming ahead.

If I can afford it I'll be coming up. I LOVED UK but I'm going to need some serious help paying for it!

thanks everyone for the input and responses! I'll call em and see what's up! I heard they were sort of canadian friendly and one of my other friends from canada got in here last year but didnt matriculate.

Long time lurker, first time poster (been using a friend's account to do some research on schools through here). Got the call at 10pm tonight while studying for exams! Very excited! I'm an OOS and interviewed on the 22nd of November. Loved everything about the campus, faculty and students (at least the two that were tour guides). Good luck to everyone else!

Got the call this morning while I was still asleep in bed! Accepted 😀

How can they raise tuition from 58k to 67k in one year?! This seems completely unfair and ridiculous. I mean, did physician salaries just increase by 19%? The increase is many times greater than inflation. How can they justify this?

UK seems like a great school, but this tuition is prohibitively expensive. 🙁

I interviewed on the same day. I wonder who you are 😉

I was accepted at UK as an OOS and have worked full time in the basic sciences here for the last year and may be able to lend some insight.
Because of the economy, subsequent budget cuts, etc, UK did not give raises to its employees for a couple years. Most in the health care division of the campus received them (they are a separate enterprise), but the university at large did not. The previous president who just recently departed felt that UK was becoming less competitive in retaining and attracting potential faculty and employees because of this. So for the first time in, I think, 3 years he allowed merit based raises. However they didn't have the money in the budget to actually do this (millions of dollars short actually). The first plan to get around this was to increase tuition campus wide. It especially hits OOS because UK receives much more state funding proportionally than say UofL. This didn't cover all of the cost for the raises and as far as I know they are still trying to figure out where to come up with the other couple million.

It brings up a lot of interesting facets about UK that a lot of outside applicants don't see.

I was the tall guy 🙂

Doesn't ring a bell. I am relatively tall too. 😳

That's interesting to know. Thanks for sharing your behind-the-scenes knowledge!

Thanks for sharing! This is good to know.

I'd also point out that, according to my UK interviewer, the cost of educating one medical student for one year is about $150,000. (I've never seen this number verified anywhere else, but he sure seemed like he knew what he was talking about.)

A lot of the difference between what we pay for tuition and what it actually costs is made up for by state subsidies. IDK if there are other sources of funding (federal, or private?) but there have been cuts to graduate education at a lot of gov't levels lately.

I interviewed in mid-Sept. with the following (In state, 3.5 undergrad, 3.8grad, 30 mcat, wealth of experience and volunteering, very strong pre health committee rec letter + physician's letter) and as of Oct 17 was put on hold. Committee met this past Thursday and I got word today that I'm still on hold, which is worrying me. Anyone in similar situation or has any advice I could benefit from?

You could send them a letter of intent saying how much you'd like to go to UK and that it's your #1 choice.

Besides the update/intent letter, not much else to do besides have patience. It has been reiterated to me that UK tends to see significant movement on the hold/deferred decision side because students decide on UL. Also, with OOS tuition one of the highest in the country, I'm sure a lot of people will withdraw an acceptance when deciding between ~$30,000 in their home state and ~$70,000 a year at UK.
Last piece of advice on a less hopeful note, start thinking now about what you are going to do in the time before you reapply if you don't make it off the wait list. Get a jump on research jobs, hospital intern programs, etc now. No one will blame you for dropping them in the spring if you get in. I was in your position two years ago and found myself sitting at home in May after graduation trying to figure out what I was going to do to improve my application. Get a jump on it now.

Can anyone else verify that tuition for OOS is estimated at 67k right now? That is a jump from 58k that I was not prepared for. I don't want to call and ask them for information that I could find elsewhere. If it has jumped that much, here's hoping that OOS students receive substantial scholarships...

67K is correct according to the letter and email they sent me. For international students they want to see two years expenses, so including living etc. which they estimate at around 92K per year, so about 185K 😱

I'm sorry, but that figure just makes me sick. :barf:

any idea how worth it this weekend would be? are most people going?

I think it'll be well worth your time, if you live anywhere within driving distance. I just want to be as informed as possible when making a decision that will lock me in to something for four years.

could anyone tell me how the escrow account thing works at UK? Kim Scott seems to be busy these days...

I just talked with Kim on the phone and Canadians are apparently an exception. In most cases, Canadians do not need to set up an escrow account. None of the Canadians that enrolled last year needed to set one up.

I won't be going since it's like a $600+ flight

Last year, a recording of the program was sent out, so I imagine they will do the same this year. Obviously it's not quite the same as being there, but you won't miss everything.

So, to those who went to the informational meeting on Saturday, did you feel relieved about the curriculum changes or was it disconcerting? I have no doubt that it's the right move for the school, but I am a little concerned that we'll be the first class to experience it at UK. I'm not sure if I want to be a guinea pig.

I felt the same way at first but the more I learn about these schools the more I realize that they make changes like this all the time. It's normal to do this type of restructuring every 3-5 years. And they're not re-doing quite as much as they make it seem. The professors are going use the same power point slides and test questions they've used in the past (or at least they do at other schools). They've just streamlined exactly who teaches what bits of information.

What days does their admissions committee meet? I could go filtering through this thread but would rather ask.

This has to be a mistake right? 😱 I'm Canadian as well and this is a tad scary... I recently received an interview invitation and was planning to check it out but I'm having second thoughts now. I already got accepted somewhere else but was hoping to have the option of deciding on which school I want to go rather than once again have the schools decide for me...

I know that the class is full already, and that several people will drop acceptances at May comes up, but I'm still on Hold and was wondering what some of you thought: I'm in state, 3.5 undergrad GPA at private lib. arts college, 3.8 graduate GPA, 30Q MCAT, had very strong letters, interviews went really well, and have lots of ECs and experience. I'm bilingual with Spanish and played collegiate athletics --> (though I know that doesn't really matter). Someone I know linked to admissions said they would expect me to be pretty high on the waitlist but I can't help but to be extremely worried now that February is coming and I don't have an acceptance. Any thoughts?

I imagine there will be more movement after scholarship are awarded at UK and other schools. I think it was said at the revisit day that Feb. 15 is when they'll notify recipients of scholarships, and UofL is in March (saw your other post there). I don't think many will withdraw their acceptance until after they know the cost for each school.

In last year's thread they received an email from admissions when all spots were filled stating that they were only interviewing for the alternate list. Lots still got in throughout the spring, and even late July the week before orientation. Don't get discouraged!

Yep, after Feb 15th, you can bet most people will begin to make up their minds about where they're going...cough...me. As your name implies...waiting.

Dunno if it'll make you feel any better, but I am in the exact same boat. Interviewed at both UK and U of L the first week of November and have yet to get a decision from either one. KY resident with a 3.58 GPA, 31 MCAT, and solid medical experience. I am a collegiate athlete as well.

One of my interviewers at UK was really honest and straightforward during my interview. He thought I would get in to both Kentucky schools, but said it would depend on the level of competition this year. I have pretty much accepted that I will be waitlisted at this point. Just hoping for a high spot.

Did anyone hear back on scholarships today? I know they said "on or around the 15th." Does that mean if we don't get an email in the next few days that we're out of luck? I looked at the threads for the last couple years but there was very little mention of scholarships (only something in mid-April in the 09-10 thread).

fyi, i got a call today so they were definitely calling. dunno how many they get around to today vs after, though.

Does anyone know when in march they are notifying the people on hold?
