Did anyone hear back on scholarships today? I know they said "on or around the 15th." Does that mean if we don't get an email in the next few days that we're out of luck? I looked at the threads for the last couple years but there was very little mention of scholarships (only something in mid-April in the 09-10 thread).

I'm not sure if your having not heard back yet means that you're out of the running for a scholarship, but I do know that quite a few of my friends, as well as myself, have received scholarship notification, and most of us heard on the 15th via email/phone call.

Hi everyone! I was recently accepted into UK COM and it's definitely one of my top choices. however, I'm out-of-state, and as you all know, the OOS tuition is pretty high. Does anyone here know if it's possible to become a kentucky resident while I'm in med school?

I received a phone call around 10 AM that morning from one of the interviewers I had back when I interviewed. Two of my friends were also notified by phone. Julie McDaniel sent an email two days afterward with a scholarship acceptance form. If you haven't heard yet, I would call Julie to check it out. She's really nice and helpful!

The numbers are out:

OOS Tuition went from $58,553 to $62,066. Keep in mind, that's held constant for all four years.

IS Tuition went from $31,907 to $33,821.

The other 'curriculum costs' add about 3k to those figures (supplies, books, etc).

Total Cost of Attendance:
OOS:$88,298 IS: $60,053

Does anyone know when those applicants that have been placed on hold will be notified if they have been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted? I want to say I heard it was in March but am not sure how accurate this is.
Thanks guys and congrats to those accepted!

when is the last day to withdraw acceptance?

isn't it usually may 15th? that's the last date to withdraw by that you can still get your deposit back. Uk actually didn't ask me for a deposit, though.

Well, according to the admissions folks, acceptances are unfortunately out of the question for now until the waitlist has been made. I interviewed 2/25 as an OOS student and received a thin letter (heart attack city) last week saying that I was placed on hold and that decisions about the waitlist would be made in April, probably late in the month IIRC. It appears we have a bit of a wait before us. So, hold on and good luck!

Edited to add: Acceptances are out of the question because the class is full and oversubscribed. I hope everyone already accepted gets into Harvard or some such and finds magical ways to finance it.

Haha I am with you there. Fingers crossed. Luckily I am accepted elsewhere however UK is my number one.

Hey guys! I just wanted to add that I got a call last week about a scholarship so there's still hope! I was guessing that someone else who had been awarded that scholarship decided to go somewhere else or something.

I have a question about the guaranteed tuition, though. Most schools estimate that tuition goes up each year partly because of school budget, which UK obviously accounts for from the beginning, but also because the second year is longer than the first, and 3rd and 4th years are even longer. Will our tuition at UK go up predictably according to the length of the school year, or is it truly the exact same every year?

I just got an alternate list notification. Time to invoke Dumb and Dumber: "So you're saying there's a chance!" Hope you have good news headed your way as well!:luck:

Does anyone know how many are normally placed on the alternate list? I have heard there is considerable movement on it as the cycle ends.

Not sure, and not sure that they would tell you. My best guess is that they send out a good deal more alternate list positions than they think they'll need.

Might be a dumb question...but if we haven't heard anything about possible scholarships does that mean we are out of luck? I was accepted back in November or December and haven't heard much about scholarships at all.

need based i dunno, merit based i would guess most schools have done most of their handing out already, BUT keep in mind those with scholarships may attend another school, and if the money is freed up it may well be reawarded.

I had figured that was the case but I just got one recently, way after they were normally awarded. Definitely don't rule it out yet!

I am interested in graduate housing options. Could any current/past students comment on these in general and which one you'd recommend?

Thanks!

withdrew my acceptance. hope someone gets my aid!

Thanks to all you folks for withdrawing sooner rather than later. As someone still waiting, I really appreciate it. Someone else can have your aid, I just want your spot! 😉

Any other action recently? This thread has been pretty dead recently. Are there folks still on hold? Anyone else get waitlisted, or, even better, has the waitlist started moving yet? Or is everyone else just lurking this thread like I have been?

Hey, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the waitlist as well. You're Joe? I hope we both make it off the list! There seems to be a bit of movement before May 15th according to older threads so hopefully the same will hold true for us!

Is there a specific day they send out calls or is it just as soon as a spot opens up? I'm from Canada so I need to make living arrangements asap if I were to get off the waitlist 🙁.

Good luck!

I believe it's just as spots become available. Nice to meet you, Lawrence, hope there's good news headed for both of us soon! We could start a UK waitlist support group or something.

I imagine the waitlist will move towards the end of May. I'm waiting for responses from Canadian schools on May 15 (fingers crossed!)

On the alternate list myself. It's interesting to see that some people are already relinquishing their spots, but I have yet to hear anything. I'm not expecting news until the end of May or into June. That doesn't keep me from prowling the SDN though! Let us know if you guys get accepted off the alt list! --Josh

Hey Josh nice to meet you! I really hope to hear back from them soon.. I can't keep myself from constantly refreshing my inbox and checking for missed calls. How are my fellow alternate-listees coping?

Graduation has left me with a lot more time to wonder. Just a couple weeks and we should see some movement, hopefully. Hang in there folks!

Withdrew my acceptance today (scholarship included). Was on the waitlist at a few schools all of last app cycle so I know what you're all going through. Good luck! :luck:

Tomorrow is the deadline for making a finalized school selection!! Of course that doesn't mean we'll hear any news tomorrow 🙁. Here's to hoping that in the next couple of weeks we can overflow this forum with celebratory posts!

Do we need to update our AMCAS? Or just be holding one acceptance and other waitlists...

This should only apply to you if you're holding multiple acceptances, ie taking up seats in multiple incoming classes. If you have one acceptance (which you're holding) and waitlists you're fine.

May 15th has come and passed. No updates to the forums, I guess no one has received any news on the Alt list?

I talked to someone in the admissions office last week and she said that May 15th is really just when things are set in motion. Pressure on those with multiple acceptances to select a single school is just beginning, things take a little while to shake out. So, keep your head up, the movement should start soon!

Yeah. Upon snooping last years forum the earliest anyone on there got a notice was 10am May 16th and then it seemed to pick up in the last few days of the month.

It'd be nice to know if offers have started to go out or if spots are not yet open.

When I called last week, they were still oversubscribed.

ahh that was me! as we're wrapping up the final month and a half of first year, I'm procrastinating studying physiology so I meandered onto these old stomping grounds to wish everyone the best of luck! i remember how life changing this time last year for me was. i hope the same for all of you! :luck:

For those of you who are already accepted, have you heard anything about the schedule yet, or the books that will be required. I know UK is altering the schedule this year somewhat significantly and it would be cool to get a head start on reading if anyone had heard.

They mentioned a few items briefly in the newsletter. I apologize in advance for the wall of text:

Curriculum - Highlights of the New 1st year UKCOM Curriculum

- Basic Science and Clinical co-course directors for each course
- Block scheduling – one course at a time, mornings 8 am – 12 pm
- Five weeks shorter than previous curriculum
- A true Winter Break
- A systems-approach to learning that mirrors upcoming changes in Board examinations

In this newsletter, we wanted to describe in more detail some of the course changes and highlight key features of the new curriculum.

- Greater integration of the clinical and foundational sciences. To ensure this successful integration, each course will have a basic scientist and a clinician as co-course directors.
- Retention of our old curriculum's strengths. Students have long appreciated our "block" curriculum, where focus is primarily on one course, with classes 8 am -12 pm. This will continue in the new curriculum (the only standing afternoon commitment is a weekly
- Introduction to Clinical Medicine small group meeting, one of our most popular experiences which will continue in the revised curriculum).
- Elimination of Redundancies. With greater integration of M1 and M2, we have identified areas of redundancy in our old curriculum.
- This has resulted in the M1 year being 5 weeks shorter, ending in late May rather than early July! The M2 curriculum is currently being developed, and is expected to be of similar length to our current M2 year (early August-early May).

- Anatomy. Your first course will be principles of anatomy and basic histology/cell biology, with increased clinical correlates.
- Biochemistry/Genetics. This has long been an exception to our one course/one block system, as these courses dovetail in so much material and are naturally taught in tandem. One benefit of our curriculum change: Biochemistry and Genetics had previously spanned November-February, with exams occurring soon after Winter break. Students will now finish these courses prior to Winter break in the new curriculum (courses will extend one week longer in December, but resume one week later in January), with a true break in study.
- Foundations of Disease and Therapeutics. This course will focus on the basics of disease (inflammation, neoplasia, infectious disease), the basic principles of therapeutics, and immunology.
- Neurosciences. This will be the first "systems" course, including not only neuroanatomy, but also neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuropathology, neurohistology, and neuromicrobiology.
- Behavioral Basis of Medicine. This will include instruction on psychiatric disease and psychiatric medications, dovetailing nicely with the neuroscience course.

The dates for first year are in the online academic calendar.

... I don't recall seeing anything about textbooks though. In all honestly I wouldn't recommend buying anything until talking with a few second years during your first week (or so I've been told).

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Still no news on the alternate list? There should have been some movement by now right?

I called the office of admissions today, they said there HAS been some movement on the alternate list and there are still individuals holding multiple seats so they expect to see further movement still. Keep those heads high!

Hey Josh thanks for posting! I guess this is much better than the class being oversubscribed still. Lets hope for the best!

hey guys, don't buy or read any books over the summer. seriously, take the summer off and enjoy it. Whatever you do over the summer will probably not help you anyway, or if it does, it will be VERY minimal.

books wise, usually the professors have their own lecture notes and will sell the note packets at kennedy's book store at the beginning of the block. i honestly have never cracked a textbook all year nor have i bought anything besides note packets and an anatomy atlas (netter's or rohen's).

that being said, it is way too early to be worrying about books/courses. find a place to live, then go on vacation!

oh, and you will need a stethoscope. now would be a good time to hint to friends and family to buy you one with your name personalized on it.

Here's to hoping the month of June brings good news!

Could anyone recommend any housing options within walking distance? The Renters Guide that they send out is helpful but quite discouraging. Most, if not all, of the properties they surveyed have comments like "do not come here" or "a class-action law-suit needed"...

I've been looking into Cravens properties (159 Gazette Ave. and 178 Leader Ave) and Anderson communities (University Village). They seem pretty nice at reasonable prices but was wondering if anyone here has lived there before. Any advice on housing would be much appreciated.

I would stay away from University Village. It's loaded with loud and annoying undergrads. Leader and Gazette apartments are the most convenient, but kind of depressing looking IMO. I live in a condo that's a 10-15 minute walk from the med center and am moving out this month if you might be interested. It's extremely nice, quiet, and has excellent security. $900 plus electric and cable/internet. DM me if you're interested

Back to the thread, has there been any movement recently?
I haven't heard a thing, unfortunately. Are most deadlines for picking one school past at this point? Anyone with multiple acceptances want to comment? When I called, they said the period of most movement lasts through the first two weeks of June, but that window is rapidly closing.
