The student and faculty body isn't all that racially diverse, but I don't believe that it reflects a preference by the admissions committee. Rather, I think it is a reflection of the applicant pool to medical school. You can get the exact numbers from the MSAR book. The UVM undergrads seem considerably more diverse. There is a significant refugee population in Burlington including Burmese, Bhutanese, Somali refugees.

There is an incredible amount of diversity of experience. Lots of nontraditional students, parents, older students, people who have done research, people who studied primatology in Africa, people who travelled the world, history teachers, actors, etc. Never a dull moment here!

Thanks! Diversity is something up on my priority list when choosing a med school.

pooled today, it took awhile. Are they still offering many interviews?

Interviewing Nov 3. Does anyone know how fast their turnaround is for acceptance/rejection/waitlist?

What do you consider a while? I ask since I've been complete since 9/2 and haven't been pooled yet. Beginning to lose hope here.

Check your status online if you haven't been pooled. They reject without email notification.

just spoke with the office this morning and asked for more clarification regarding those that have been waitlisted. the director is the one that pulls students off of the waitlist herself, and she makes offers in batches. her last batch of offers was last week and the next set of offers is slated to occur before thanksgiving, which sucks, because people like me, who are on the waitlist, will have to wait another three weeks.

nonetheless, at least i don't have to obsess and check the status page 15 times a day 🙂

Thank you for letting us know. When you said the director made her last batch of offers last week, did you mean those offers were to people off the waitlist or just straight acceptances?

The lady on the phone told me that she picks both direct admits as well as people off of the waitlist.

This wait is driving me nuts.

Same here. And that's kind of nervewracking as I had presumed that being waitlisted meant they weren't going to look at us until the end of the cycle? I wonder on what basis she makes the decision on waitlists at this point.

Hi, can anyone please tell me what makes university of vermont stand out differently than the other med schools? besides the really diverse student body?
thanks,

I have my interview on thursday. Does anyone know how many interviews there are (1/2)? Also, what was the interview like? Intense or laid back? Research focus? Faculty?

Hey SDapplicant,

There is only one interview. It will be with either a current faculty member or alumni of the school. I found my interview at UVM to be incredibly laid back. My interviewer was incredibly friendly, and I could tell that she really loved the school. She had thoroughly read my application and just asked me about my different experiences. She did ask a couple of tough questions about some of my leadership roles, such as what was the biggest mistake I had made as a leader. All in all, though, I really enjoyed it!

I wish you the best of luck in your interview! I hope you like UVM! :luck:

Hey darkhope,

I think this may vary from applicant to applicant, but I feel like UVM's integrated curriculum is definitely one thing that sets the school apart. The VIC(or Vermont Integrated Curriculum) is definitely a unique approach, and the opportunity to start your clerkships early is a definite plus.

The school also has a very strong primary care presence. In fact, they're well known for having a majority of their class go into primary care(except for last year where everyone went EM...). You'll find out more if you do some research into the curriculum, but their is a primary care preceptorship type of experience during the first year that transitions to a public health project during the second year.

I also found their simulation center to be absolutely amazing. Most schools have sim centers, but UVM was the only one I've seen that also had laparoscopic surgery simulators in addition to the traditional models.

Again, this is no substitute for conducting your own research. Scour their website and your MSAR for any tidbits you can pick up! Good luck if you have an upcoming interview!

Interview Invite today!

They gave me mid-december but im hoping to reschedule, anyone know how good they are about that?

Also, OOS, any chances of becoming a Vermont Resident, Dont know much about the school but honestly even the OOS tuition is pretty fair compared to some of the other schools I applied to.

Still hoping for an OOS interview invite. I LOVE this school. Come on Vermont!!! :xf:

there is little/no change of becoming a vermont resident. everyone who is enrolled in the school pays OOS tuition throughout all four years unfortunately 🙁

sorry to burst your bubble! they do offer financial aid scholarships to offset your tuition expenses.

Thanks a lot Ironclad!, the school sounds great!, I do have an interview invite, but I'm not sure if I should go, since I'm not really into primary care so it might not be a great fit, I need to still research the school more,
but is the curriculum for the 1st and 2nd yr pass/fail or is it graded?
Also is there a weak research focus and instead mostly a strong clinical focus since there is less nih funds?

Yeah, you'll definitely have to see if it's the right fit for you. I enjoyed my day there, and I got a great vibe from everyone that I met. I don't think it's the best fit for me because the diversity in Vermont is not quite what I would like. Nonetheless, it is an excellent school!

The pre-clinical curriculum is honors/pass/fail! If you've taken a look at a schematic of the VIC, you take your boards earlier and start your clerkships several months ahead of schools with more traditional curricula.

While research was not mentioned extensively during the interview day, I've come to learn that schools that don't necessarily have the best USNWR research ranking still have plenty of opportunities for research. Speaking specifically about UVM, while research may not be UVM's emphasis, I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunities to get involved with research. They had an entire building on the UVM College of Medicine campus dedicated to biomedical research. If I remember correctly, our tour guide even mentioned that they had just received a new Electron Microscope, if that's your thing!

I would say just think about whether the school would be a right fit for you, take into consideration other interviews you may have, and the cost of attendance at UVM and then determine if the school is right for you. You should also try to PM some of the current UVM students if you have more specific questions on research opportunities! I hope this helps! Good luck with everything. :luck:

research is prevalent here, as it is at most any medical school. there is a focus on primary care but really what that translates to "on the ground" is a very strong, grounded clinical education that will serve you well no matter where you end up. there are no barriers to specialization.

also, to correct what was said earlier: the entire curriculum is H/P/F. there is no P/F in preclinicals. that said, the grading scheme is normative (ie, no curves) and the distribution is such that virtually the entire class falls into the "pass" range. this is not a competitive place.

Caught my mistake... sorry about that! I interviewed at a few schools during the same week as UVM... got them a bit mixed...

Thank you for your input! I definitely enjoyed my time at UVM, and I hope you're enjoying it there! A good family friend of mine is an alumni, and he has nothing but amazing things to say about the school. 🙂

Does anyone know what the rough chances are of getting a interview if we have been placed in the "pool of applicants who may receive a interview invite"?

Last year's class was not only EM heavy, but surgery heavy as well - including surgical sub-specialties, we had 24 students match into surgery, which was unprecedented for UVM. One of the "knocks" I frequently hear about UVM is that it's too primary-care focused, but that's definitely not true if you look at last year's match list. If you want a school that's one of the best when it comes to primary-care education, it's hard to beat UVM, but if you know you don't want primary-care, you won't be limited at all by going to UVM.

Agreed that the VIC & early clerkships are the major selling points for this school. The curriculum is very logically put together in a way that makes the material easy to understand and retain, so you don't lose anything by finishing pre-clinicals faster. Since the school switched to VIC/early clinical format a few years ago, board scores have stayed the same or slightly increased, so there's no downside to having shorter pre-clinical classroom time.

And there are definite benefits to early clinicals. The obvious one is simply having more time in the hospital before starting residency, which will hopefully help make you better prepared to jump right in and hit the ground running as you start intern year. The other major benefit to early clerkships is starting 4th year early as well - UVMers start 4th year in March of their 3rd calendar year, which gives you a full 6 months of 4th year before you submit your residency application. So I was able to do a home and away sub-I in my specialty, 2 electives in my specialty, one of my required 4th year months (ER), and take Step 2, all before I submitted my application. And then I was able to do 2 more aways during application season before interviews started. So I had the whole package when I applied - 4 letters that were all from 4th year rotations in my specialty, a strong Step 2 score (the extra time in 4th year allows you to take a whole month off to study for it), and the time to do audition rotations and show commitment to my specialty. And that was all done by October, so there was plenty of time later in the year to take vacation/interesting electives/etc. before the end of the year.

As you can probably see, I am very happy with the education I received at UVM, so I'd be happy to answer more questions about my time there.

in recent application cycles it appears to have been ~1/4, ie 25%

also: yeah lockjaw 👍

Thanks a lot, this was a hard decision, and the school looks so beautiful!, but I think I'm going to withdraw, but just a heads up, I don't think I got pooled first, so you can get an invite without getting pooled, good luck everyone!!

Anyone have advice for travel to/from airport and campus? Are cabs cheap? Hope I get to stay with a student...

Airport to near campus was like 12 bucks. Its weird, they charge you like 8 bucks for the first mile or something.

REALLLY hoping for this to be my first acceptance. I need this OOS acceptance. NO WAITLIST!

Anyone have any thoughts on Pre-Interview update letters? do they help you get an interview from the pool? do they make any difference at all? are they just annoying for the staff to add and read?

I know they take them, I sent them updated grades from my summer courses but I am just wondering if it will make any difference?

What does pooled mean?
My check app status page still just says that app has been received...

Had a fantastic interview here last week. Absolutely loved the campus, curriculum, and community. I know the committee hasn't had a chance to meet yet, but I can't help obsessively checking the status page.

Good luck to those recently pooled or with upcoming interviews!

I would love to interview here!! I think Vermont is amazing and, being from the west coast, I would love to have the opportunity here! 🙂

Good luck with this school!

Is anyone having any trouble accessing the Online Applicant Center? I'm getting this message: "500 Internal Server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed."

Just tried it and got the same message

Hey, just checking to see if anybody knows how long one can be pooled for? I assume it's until the end of the cycle, but is there a usual time frame that they decide on a pooled applicant?

Pooled here, but looking back to past years I think you can be pooled until the end of the cycle.

Anyone know what this status means....

We have received all materials you have indicated on your supplemental application and your file is under preliminary review. Please note that the preliminary review of your file may take 6-8 weeks. Please continue to check your status through the Online Applicant Center.

It just changed to this yesterday, but before that I had a different message that said essentially the same thing.

i think this is what marks your application complete. it is going to go in line to be reviewed my the admissions committee 🙂 good luck! i interviewed her and i'm currently on the waitlist. this school is super cool!

anyone hear when the next ad-comm meeting is going to be? this wait is literally KILLING me.

At my interview on the 1st, they mentioned that the next ad-com meeting would be either the 16th or the 19th (I can't recall precisely). If that is the case, I would imagine that the next wave of acceptances/waitlists/rej's should be released a week or so later.

I'm right there with you on the wait being terrible. Here's to hoping for good news :xf:

OH CRAP! that's next week! now i'm super nervous 🙂 it has to be the 16th, b/c the 19th is a weekend 🙂

PLUS, interviews occur on Tues & Thursdays, so it is most likely that they meet on a Wednesday.

good luck all!! 🙂 hopefully this list explodes next week with acceptances!

yea they said 16th and that we can expect to hear something by the 20th. The students said 9/10 OOS ppl are not accepted off the bat so dont freak out if u get waitlisted. its a good thing for this school
