2011-2012 Wake Forest University Application Thread

11. Is there a mentor/advisor system? Who are the advisors—faculty members, other students, or both?
1st year students are assigned 2nd year mentors. I stayed in touch with both my mentor and my mentee through all years of medical school. Once you pick out a field of medicine that you want to match into, most departments will link you up with a mentor (if you ask) to help you through the process. This is department dependent though.

12. How diverse is the student body? Are there support services or organizations for ethnic minorities and women? Not having attended other medical schools, it is tough for me to say how we match up. I would say our mix of minorities and women match the surrounding community as a whole. There are interest groups for people of all colors and genders. There also seem to be very generous scholarships and some sort of “pre-medical school” prep course for minorities/underprivileged students at our school. Not sure if this is still something that is offered or not.

Facilities
13. Tell me about the library and extracurricular facilities (i.e., housing and athletic/recreational facilities).
Library is excellent. Tons of online textbooks and other resources. Pretty much unlimited printing in the library for medical students (they give you a generous credit when you start school). There are various study rooms all over the school. We have an onsite athletic center (albeit small, it does have circuit training, treadmills, bikes, some free weights, wet sauna, etc. Along with a variety of fitness classes offered). We are very active in the extramural program through the main campus and have class reps that put together teams in all sorts of sports to compete against all the other graduate schools. Housing is pretty much on your own. Lots of people rent in the neighborhoods adjacent to the school. Some people commute. In general housing is very affordable here and few people commute more than 10 minutes to the hospital each day.

14. Are there computer facilities available to students? Are they integrated into the curriculum/learning?
Yes. Each student is given a laptop during first year with full computer support throughout the 4 years in school. Lecture slides and audio are published on our online portal “ewake.” My portal shows my personalized schedule for all 4 years. I can go back at any time to review old lecture material, etc. We are also given quizzes online during class, for which the results are automatically displayed in graph format in the front of the class for the lecturer to discuss. These quizzes make up a small part of our grade, but it is a fun way to keep people engaged and paying attending.

15. What type of clinical sites—ambulatory, private preceptors, private hospitals, rural settings—are available or required for clerkships? Does this school allow for students to do rotations at other institutions or internationally?
One of the great things about our school is that nearly all of the clinical rotations are completed at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, with the exception of 2 weeks of OB and a few days here and there in downtown clinics, hospice, and time with private preceptors during 1st and 2nd year. By and large though, we seem to do better than average at keeping you from running all over the place for clinical rotations. Away rotations are allowed during 4th year as are international rotations.

At some point in the future they are talking about building a new medical school building away from the hospital for 1st and 2nd year classes. This is a terrible idea and hopefully someone crushes it before it comes into fruition. But it shouldn't impact anyone starting school for the next few years. It is great taking classes right next to the hospital and being able to get involved early on in clinical activities. Wake does a great job of this.

16. Is a car necessary for clinical rotations? Is parking a problem?
A car is necessary for clinical rotations (although you probably need it for less than 10% of your clinic duties). Parking is not a problem.

Financial Aid
17. What is the current tuition and fees? Is this expected to increase yearly? If so, at what rate?
About 40,000 for tuition. We were in the top ten least expensive private medical schools in the 2011 US News and World Report. They do not charge you extra for your computer, Step 1 or Step 2 (the school reimburses you for the Step 1 and 2 exams after you register for them). Students are required to have insurance either private or through the school. Most textbooks are available online through the library so you only have to buy what you want to buy. It seems like tuition goes up every year, but that holds true just about everywhere. Our financial aid people are excellent! They work hard for the students who want extra help and provide a lot of great educational material.

18. Are there stable levels of federal financial aid and substantial amounts of university/medical school endowment aid available to students?
Yes.

19. Are there students who have an "unmet need" factor in their budget? If so, where do these students come up with the extra funds?
Our financial aid office is awesome. http://www.wakehealth.edu/School/Financial-Aid/MD-Program.htm Probably best to search there if you have specific questions. I try to stay within my budget and most of the other students don’t seem to have a problem doing so since the costs of living here are low.

20. Are spouses and dependents/children covered in a student's budget?
Yes. This is a very family friendly school. There is a very active "better halves" group of spouses.

21. Is someone available to assist students with budgeting and financial planning?
Yes.

22. Does this school provide guidance to its students, and to its graduates/alumni, on debt management?
Yes.

Student Involvement
23. What medical school committees (e.g., curriculum committee) have student representation?
Curriculum committee, financial aid committee, honor council, and several others that I can’t think of.

We have a new dean of the medical school. He is making some changes and hasn't sought much student involvement as of yet. Hopefully he will be more proactive in speaking with some of the more seasoned students before implementing drastic changes. Only time will tell, I just want to put that out here.

24. Are students involved in (required or voluntary) community service?
During some of our rotations we are required to spend time at free or low cost clinics as part of our curriculum. There is a weekly student clinic each Wednesday evening http://www.wakehealth.edu/DEAC/ that is well run with all components run by students. There is also a student run community health fair each year that we organize. Many students volunteer at other local clinics. Each class has a couple volunteer coordinators that plug us in with opportunities to serve with habitat for humanity, ronald mcdonald house, and many other local charities. Each year the classes compete for who can donate the most to local food banks as well.

25. How active is the Student Council/Government? Are there other student organizations?
There are a number of student organizations. Ranging from very active, to not very active. In general though there is always something going. Usually a couple lunch talks/student meetings a week for some organization or another.

Policies
26. Is there an established protocol for dealing with student exposure to infectious diseases? Is disability insurance provided to cover this exposure?
Yes. Yes.

27. Does this school provide, or does the student pay for, vaccinations against Hepatitis B or prophylactic AZT treatment in case of a needle-stick or accident?
I think the school pays for it.

28. Is there a school Honor Code? Is there a grievance process/procedure? Are the students involved?
There is a school honor code. We have a student elected honor council with a well established protocol for handling honor code violations. All complaints go through the student honor council prior to moving on to the faculty. If no basis is found for a complaint, faculty never know about it. Which is nice.

Residency
29. May I see a list of residency programs to which this school's recent graduates were accepted?
I don’t think there is one online, but we match just about everywhere into everything. A good percentage of the class is from the Southeast and pursue residency in this region. Here are some of the places the class of 2011 went: St. Louis Children’s, U of Chicago, Ohio State, U of Ky, VCU, Case Western, Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, UT-Soutwestern, UVA, UAB, Oregon Health & Science University, U of Tenn, Rush, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, UNC, Baylor, Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus, Thomas Jefferson, U of Md, U of MI, Ohio State, Barnes-Jewish Hosp, UT Texas, U of FL, Phoenix Children’s, Cincinnati Childrens, U of WA, Tulane, Beth Israel Deaconess MA, Penn State, UCSF, NYU, Massachusetts General, UC-Davis. Lots stay here at Wake.

We match into all specialties. Of course the school would rather more of us go into primary care, but the split last year was 50/50 between primary care and other. With the other category having many going into anesthesia, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, dermatology, radiology, emergency. Wake Forest is nationally known for their anesthesia and radiology residency programs.

Questions to Ask Yourself
30. Does this school have strengths in the type of medicine (primary versus specialized care, urban versus rural practice environment, academic medicine versus private practice) that I will want to practice?
This school is large enough to provide you with whatever type of experience you want to get out of it. It also prepares you to be a stellar clinician in whatever field you end up going into. This was apparent on away rotations when universally my classmates said we were very well prepared to perform at a high level.

31. Would I be happy at this school (for at least the next four years)?
That is a question only you can ask. Most applicants don’t have so many acceptances that they can be ultra picky about where they want to go. If you are in that position, go where you will be happiest. I have been very well pleased with my experience here and given the choice would gladly come here again.

Any body know the stats necessary for an OOS applicant to be competitive???!!

do they email II and/or status updates or do we need to check reguarly?

once our file is complete how long to hear back from them (on average)?

Has anyone who received the secondary been rejected? I have been complete since 8/9 and have yet to hear anything...

what are your stats? I've been complete since 10/19 (not long I know), am OOS and want to know how long I should prepare to wait. 3.65(BCPM)/4.0(AO)/35Q

So I just called WF admissions... I submitted my secondary on 9/17, complete on 10/4, my application's been reviewed but I haven't gotten any word back. Guessing that means I'm not competitive enough to get an interview yet - do they send rejections? The receptionist said I could send a letter of interest about why I want to attend WF and if it changes my status, they'll be sure to let me know.

I am in the same boat as you. I am planning to wait till the 20th and if I dont get a communication, I will send a letter of interest!

Hey guys did your status change online after your applications had been reviewed or did you have to call and ask??

It doesn't seem stat based at all. I got an interview invite with a 35 and 3.65 cGPA, but many others with better stats did not even get a secondary.

They email you. I was complete 9/16 and received an invite 10/12. I have no idea how representative this is though.

Good luck all!

Anyone else eagerly awaiting 30-Nov?

I loved Wake and really saw myself there. Definitely my first choice of the schools I have interviewed at... :xf:

Just curious...what are you waiting for on Nov. 30? When did you interview? I interviewed on 11/9 and she told us our decision would be made 11/16. Still no word on the decision.

I interviewed much more recently.

Anyone interviewing on Wednesday the 23rd and want to meet up the night before for dinner or something?

Has anyone heard anything post-interview recently? We were told on our interview day (late October) that a decision would be made 11/16 and that we would hear from them on the 18th. Still no word... This is one of my top choices and the wait is killing me!

I am in the same boat. I interviewed on Nov. 1st. I was expecting something at the end of last week. Does anybody know when we'll be hearing back from them?

No, nothing here either. Going back through this year & previous years threads seems to indicate that they meet on Wednesday and then you can hear anywhere between the subsequent Friday to the middle of the following week. Here's hoping for some good news tomorrow.:xf:

Accepted! By status change this morning and I couldn't be more excited.

Accepted as well! via email. Interviewed 2 weeks ago.

haven't heard back since.

those receiving Interviews, when were u complete

When you get an interview invite, are you told a date or do you get to pick one? If you get to pick one, anyone know what dates are currently available?

If you don't mind, what are your stats? I was complete 11/1 and have not heard anything.

Didn't get my secondaries in until beginning of November but I got an interview on 11/17 for the middle of January. Is there still some hope of getting in or should I go ahead and start working on next year's application?

They interview until March. Of course you should go!

Wake Forest tends to take their time in handing out interviews and acceptances. We haven't sent anyone to WFU med in the past five years simply because the folks that got in were accepted so late in the season everyone was already making plans for other schools (ETSU, UNC, ECU)

anybody on here interview with me on 11/21? if I remember correctly the adcom is meeting tomorrow to decide on our files, so I guess we'll find out soon!

There is definitely still hope!

Even if you aren't accepted this cycle, going to an interview and getting the experience will really help you if you end up needing to reapply. And at this point, you've already put so much time and money into applying that a bit more for this interview is a very worthwhile investment.

Sent in a letter of interest and in the area email yesterday. Got an acknowledge that it was added to my file a few hours later. Would looooove it if I got an invite sometime today as I'm about to book my flight for RDU tonight lol.

yeah I was there! our fate is being determined as I type... wonder how long it'll take to get back to us :xf:

Great success! I got my interview invite about an hour ago. It was a reply to my "in-the-area" email from Monday after sending in my letter of interest yesterday. It said they had Jan 25 and 30 open for interviews (I'm there 26-29). I replied back Jan 30 would work out and asked if that meant I was receiving an invite. Got antsy after waiting 30 minutes so I called to confirm that it was indeed an invite =D

I'm so glad I have a friend in Durham with a car. Public transportation from Duke -> WF seems nonexistent except for the PART.

People weren't kidding here when they said WF loves hearing about "Why Wake?" haha So to those still waiting...send that in!

👍 on this decision date, however I interviewed during an earlier date.

Good luck to you both!!! Hopefully we're 3 for 3!

im guessing you were one of the 5 girls haha, but it looks like people usually find out by midway through the next week at the latest, hopefully we'll know sooner!

Forgive me if this was posted elsewhere. Who do you send the Letter of Interest to?
Thanks, and congrats!

Congrats on the interview! I want to send an interest letter along with my fall grades in a couple of weeks - do you have any tips on what to say? I like Wake because of the area and for its reputation but it's hard to come up with specifics to put in a letter. Any thoughts / tips?

I would definitely like to know this!

has anyone tried calling after the date your decision was supposed to be made? i wonder if they would tell you if you got accepted/rejected/waitlisted

should we still send a "why wake" letter if we already wrote about that on our app?

I wrote about interest in some of the specific centers they have (e.g. regenerative medicine). I also wrote about why it applied to me personally (i.e. family history of illness), the curriculum, and student body. I tried to pinpoint uniquely Wake things and convey how they affect me personally.

should we still send a "why wake" letter if we already wrote about that on our app?

I didn't write a personal statement in my initial application so *shrug*

How long was your letter??? I am going to send one soon, but do not want to make it to long.

Any help would be awesome😀😀

I interviewed yesterday, and due to travel delays in Chicago, I missed the first half of the day. I was told that this is when financial aid and admissions are reviewed.

I was wondering if anyone who has interviewed could help me out an give me some insight into what weight different sections of your application are given by the adcom. Thanks.
