Submitted secondary here last night! I really love what I've heard and read about GW. I have the "ready to be reviewed" status; looking at everyone's posts, it seems to take about a week to hear whether you're on hold or offered an early interview?

I'm gonna need a lot of willpower to resist checking my status twice a day =/

lmao..if u write about gaining 50lbs of "muscle" in 3-4 yrs, the committee would just laugh at ur ignorance...do you know what 50lbs of muscle is??? :laugh:
 
my friend put on 60 over college..he's now a competitive body builder

So how did you control for and rule out bone growth or growth of nonmuscular parts of your body? How can you definitively say you put on 50 lbs of muscle? Your entire body is growing at your age, so unless you weighed your skeleton and everything separately there is no way to determine how much muscle you gained exactly.

FWIW, I would stick to the ED tech thing. 50 lbs of muscle is an impressive achievement, but someone might take it the wrong way (for example, they might think you are narcissistic, even if body building/weight lifting is something you really like to do). Unless you used your 50 lbs of additional muscle for a good cause or to learn something significant about yourself/life, it's probably not the best topic to use.

Well, it was actually closer to 49.3 pounds of muscle, so I guess you have a point there.

Thanks for a real answer. I was going more for the dedication, perseverance and sacrifice it took to get into shape as opposed to just talking about body image, numbers and vanity...I went from 100lbs skin and bones to 160, and being recruited to the power lifting team my senior year (I declined since I was a senior). Might be a little more uncommon and interesting of a response, but the more I think of it, the more likely I'll probably stick with the safe essay.

I'm just curious how you can calculate that you gained 50 lbs of muscle? Do you just calculate your lean mass percentage?

I have a scale that actually weighs out your muscle and your fat. It uses bioelectrical impedance to determine how much of each tissue you have. Perhaps he did the same?

Props to the Geebeejay, it takes a lot of discipline to get that far, but the experience is great! It's too bad you didn't get to powerlift earlier in college. I did it my junior year of High School and had a blast!

Nah I didn't calculate anything...I gained 60 lbs, very little change in bodyfat %, and my lifts went up as high as 300% (not taking into account how my form was laughable at the beginning too)...I'm just ballparking. Might be 50 give or take, or maybe I'm way off. I don't plan on using exact figures in my essays, don't worry 🙂

Some of the guys I work out with are trying to convince me to do it (powerlift competitively) in Med School, and maybe start a team if the school doesn't have one. Would be a great outlet, but I imagine I won't nearly have the time for that type of commitment. And I don't think I know enough about the sport to start a team.

idk why everyone is giving you such grief, i think that's a great thing to talk about! of course, as long as you're not bluffing. not that I think you are but they will see you if you get an interview.

Sorry if it sounded like I was giving him grief. I was being really nitpicky about how the calculations work because it's something I'm not familiar with, and was confused on how you would accurately calculate just the weight of your muscle.

I think that would great to talk about, and I was just debating how the calculations work.
 
haha you can do body fat % to figure it out. Say you're 200lbs at 25% body fat to start. You might end up 225lb but 15% body fat, so technically you've gained 41lbs of muscle (even though overall you've only gained 25lbs)

Ya, sorry to seem so jealous of 'mirin geebeejay's muscles. I was just confused about lean mass not being all muscle, but I guess the skeleton would only be negligible weight.

I think your stats are awesome for GW. Maybe they're just waiting to see if you're still seriously interested in them once you get acceptances from other schools (which you almost certainly will)? If so, an LOI will probably help a few months from now if you aren't taken off hold sooner.
They seem to be looking for a very specific type of applicant at this point in the cycle...one within their ranges and therefore more likely to not use GW as a back-up plan.

Heh, "laugh at your ignorance" came off as pretty cocky, but whatever, water under the bridge, no hard feelings dude.

On a side note, I don't think I've mentioned yet....really hoping I get an interview here. Awesome program. Hopefully verified this week...................................................

Haha, I don't know. Wish I did. I said that because SDME321's stats seemed to place him/her in a very good position for GW (exceeding their averages), and yet he/she is currently hold for re-review. So, my best guess is that right now they're looking for people more within their average ranges for matriculating students...and/or some other characteristics not readily apparent via numbers. A focus on leadership? A secondary that emphasizes an applicant's interest in GW to a greater extent than most applicants? Your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah, it was me..I do competitive bodybuilding, and there is NO WAY unless you have taken heavy doses of tren, equipoise, deca and GH that you gained 50 lbs of muscle in 3 yrs...Maybe 50lbs bodyweight, but not muscle. I mean, unless you were anorexic and malnourished I can see where 35lbs of muscle could have come from, plus your genetics must have been obtained from the gods of Mt. Olympus themselves...

I would call them tomorrow to make sure that's what your status actually is. I submitted on 7/18 too and was "complete" for a while, so I called yesterday to find out if anything was wrong with my app. Turns out that they had forgotten to update my status (aka the one that I can see) to read that I was on hold for re-review.
 
Has anyone experienced the whole complete to hold to complete switch in their app status? I know that a few people were going through this earlier in the thread. Wouldn't mind a switch back to complete :xf:

We can argue about it if you'd like, but it was over 5 years, and it was 60 pounds of body weight. 5'6 100 to 5'6 160.

What is your initial age during that time frame? A 5'6" male, weighing 100lbs is significantly underweight (almost no muscle, only bone and organs), even by 1970's standards where the average male weighed in ~160lbs.

I'm about 5'8" 170, slightly above average muscle mass. At 5'6" 160, I can't see how 60lbs of muscle was added, with no change in height...you must have literally been skin, organs, and bones.
 
hey guys, so I just received an email from GWU saying that they'd like me to complete a secondary. The problem is, my application has yet to be verified by AMCAS and my LORs have yet to be received. I don't want to get my hopes up thinking I might have a chance because seeing as how early they've send me a secondary, I feel like this is just another way for GWU to get $125 in their pocket. Any thoughts?

I'm 5'6" and weigh 125; I'm pretty damn skinny. If I was 100, I would look like a starving child in a third world country or something.

they send the email to everyone who designates them on amcas, verified or not.. they probably have not even looked at your app, sorry.

I was 18....I don't remember how tall I was then, maybe I was shorter, but I was 100 lbs.

Application marked "complete" 7/17--status hasn't changed since then and I definitely haven't gotten an email.

The optimistic part of me is happy that I'm not up for "re-review" but the neurotic part of me is worried sick. :scared:

I have been on re-review for a while now 🙁 Decided as a shot in the dark, to send an "in the area" email yesterday, hope it wasn't a bad idea!
 
Got my official rejection from last years waitlist this morning... ah well onto this year!!! So excited for my interview here again
 
I've been "complete" since 7/6.....
