I am way behind in the application process. I have received and completed my secondary application from GW. I want to submit it but I am unsure if I can because my primary application has not been verified yet by AMCAS. Do I wait for AMCAS to verify it or can I just submit the secondary now?

The general consensus is to wait. Some schools, although not the majority, auto-reject you if you submit before being verified, so why take the chance?

Dude, I'm curious where you heard this? Just so that I can verify this for myself. I talked to one of admissions people about this and they said submit whenever. To quote her:

"You may submit your secondary now or wait. Your file will not be reviewed until your application is verified."

I heard similar things from two other schools as well.

I am not sure how it would help you if they only look at it after your primary is verified. Just get the secondary in the same day the primary is in. You have nothing to gain and a lot to lose.

Possibly, but what's the rationale for an auto-rejection if they get your secondary before your primary is verified? And if there is a disadvantage why would admissions tell us there's no difference? For the fee?

I don't think this is accurate. It makes no sense. Why would they send out their secondary before primaries are verified if they are just going to auto-reject those candidates? They would be cutting out a pool of people that they might want in their med class. It says on their website to submit the secondary even if your primary isn't verified yet. I submitted mine before mine got verified, and have not been rejected (or put on hold) yet....

What is the rush to submit 2ndaries before verification? They won't look at ur app before your verified anyways. Just complete ThE secondary and have it ready so when you are verified you can submit it.

Better safe than sorry. Plus you'll be at no disadvantage. They won't "complete" you until ur primary is in.

This whole SDN rumor started because one school last year auto-rejected applicants who accessed the secondary without an invitation. If you have an invitation to a secondary, they are not going to auto-reject you for completing it, that would be absurd. Of course make sure you read the application instructions, and if you're really worried, contact the school.

+1...check out Einstein College of Medicine's application thread from last year...a couple people were auto-rejected for filling out the secondary before invite. I agree with the people above...if you've been invited to complete a secondary, go ahead and do it, especially if the admissions office for that specific school has told you it's ok to do so.

The only school I know for sure that sends secondary invites but does NOT want you submitting until your primary has been verified is Boston U.

This is a direct quote from GW:
"Please ensure that your AMCAS application is complete and verified. Your file will not be considered complete until this occurs. You are welcome to submit your secondary application in advance of your primary application being verified by AMCAS. We'll make a file and hold your application until verification and then move you along in the review process."

so is there anyone else going to interview around sept 6th?

Yeah, Albert Einstein was the one I was referencing:

"Applicants who submit a Secondary without having received an email directly from the Admissions Office automatically will be withdrawn from further consideration and charged the processing fee, if paid at the time of application."

This is probably a really dumb question, but what does one say exactly in an "in the area" email? I have an interview "in the area" on sept. 13th, but I am still on hold for re-review here. Thanks for the help!!

First of all, I see an "in the area" email as a variation on a letter of intent. Remember, you are still trying to sell yourself to the school. Thus, I think it's a good idea to put in your "in the area letter" specifically why you want to interview there. Here is a format I'd suggest:

[Salutation],

[Paragraph about "being in the area," and how much you'd like to interview at GW also and (briefly) why it is difficult to make a trip to DC twice.]

[Paragraph with more details about "why GW."]

[Conclusion paragraph; recap how much you want to go to school here and why]

[Closing]

👍 Seems like helpful tips. Gracias.

To whom do we direct the email? thank you

Complete 8/07. Just read through all 13 pages to bring myself up to speed.

I actually submitted my secondary about 3 weeks before my AMCAS was verified, and I got an interview invite a week and a half after it was verified, so I am sure it will not hurt you, if anything it will help you get an ealier interview... 🙂 just saying.

I think if they did not want you to submit before they will say it on the instructions like einstein or would not allow you to submit until verification like boston...

Hope this helps with any questions on this matter.

yeah i didnt say it would hurt him, but like you said nothing happened until a week and a half (GW's typical turn around time) later after your primary was verified.

Got this:

Your application to The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences is complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee. To date, no final decision has been made and the Admissions Committee has placed your application on hold for re-review at a later date. Files are re-reviewed by the committee periodically and there is no set schedule for decisions.

Well, I am glad they didn't flat out reject me

The one thing I like about this forum is the complete difference in mindsets between some individuals. I would rather by flat out rejected than blue balled.

lol. I appreciate not being rejected. but waiting on all these mysterious "hold" statuses is killing me

Ehh... I guess I am being a bit too hopeful with this 'on hold' thing. The consensus seems to be that on hold = rejected, but I'd like to believe that I still have a shot at here 🙂

I've got some mysterious fairy dust for the both of you 😀

I've been complete since early July and it still says:

"Your file is now complete. At this point we have received all the necessary credentials including your secondary application and your letters of recommendation in order for your application to be reviewed. While the committee does its best to review applications in a timely manner, please be aware that in order to do a thorough review of your file it may be several weeks until you hear from us again. We greatly appreciate your patience during the application process."

Looks like I'm on hold 🙁

Oh well, guess that's what happens when you got ~15,000 applicants for 300 sports

Complete since 7/18 and still nothing. I called the office and confirmed that stays is still "complete".

Does anyone know the earliest GW sends rejections?

ETA: searched last year's thread...the first definite rejections seemed to come in early November, in case anyone besides me was wondering. Though someone on there mentioned he/she knew people who were rejected before being put on re-review. =/

I've been complete since 7/31, no status change yet.

sooo. Ive ben on re-review for a month, maybe more, and I checked my status today and it was taken back to "your file is complete" saying they are reviewing my application.

Maybe Ill get an II?! one can always hope haha but if so it would mean re-review isnt a definite death sentence!

Got an Interview Invite this morning! Good luck to everyone else! See you guys there on September 20th!

On hold for re-review this afternoon. 🙄

Still on hold.

Still on hold too 🙁 Have been since mid-july too. Congrats to all those with interview invites this morning though!

I was just invited to interview on September 11th! The hotels near GWU are RIDICULOUSLY expensive, not to mention the $380 flight from Portland 🙁

Are any female applicants interested in sharing a room on the night of September 10th? I promise I'm not creepy!!!!!!

On hold! I'm going to assume it's a rejection and move on.

use priceline! you'll end up in a nice hotel for 80-100 bucks/night depending on the area. Have used it in DC before and gotten great hotels at awesome prices.

It looks like I'll be interviewing at Georgetown Oct. 18 or 19 (Thurs/Fri). I'm on hold at GW and planned on sending a letter of intent. Do they interview on certain days? As in, should I schedule G'town on the 18th, and leave the 19th (Fri.) open for GW if they want to offer me an interview?

Just to ease some of your worries, I got an interview invite on July 29th for September 7. I was also "on hold for review" twice since my application completion in early July.

My numbers also are not high at all: 3.55 cGPA, 3.1 sGPA and 30 MCAT (8 PS 11 V 11 BS).

Don't freak out 🙂

Thanks for the advice! I checked and can't find anything below $200 🙁 I'm wondering if there is a big memorial or ceremony going on in DC for September 11th. It's not exactly the most auspicious day for our country 🙁 My friend suggested hostels, so I'll check those out too and post if I find anything!

My invitation said they interview on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays only
