Is this appropriate? Are "letters of interest" basically letters that you send to their dean of admissions saying something like "I really like your school - please accept me?"

If so, I need to be sending these out asap! 🙄

when is an appropriate time to send a LOI? I just got put on hold today. Also, generally how long should a LOI be and is the content mainly why you want to go to their school specifically?

I was complete at GW July 5, then sent a LOI after being on hold essentially the whole time July 23. II received Aug 10.

One more person that doesn't know what to put for the "outside of the classroom" question. I ran a marathon, but I really don't think it was my greatest achievement. It was just hard. And it's already in my primary. My other "greatest achievements" (doing a series of cultural competency trainings, helping to build and deliver a series of community first aid trainings, taking care of my dad after a liver transplant) are also in my primary...do they really just want me to repeat something that's already in my application? I could talk about the time I hitchhiked 10000 miles in a summer and didn't die, but I don't think that's what they want.

The one challenge that I am really proud of that I didn't put in my primary was overcoming math anxiety and doing well in physics. Faiiiillllll.

i mean the thing that I talked about in the secondary WAS in my primary but I didn't really repeat anything, it was a totally different aspect of it

I have been invited for an interview at Georgetown at the beginning of November, and want to write an "In the Area" email to GWU, but I want to be a little patient and see if an invite will come on its own.

My question is this: How much of a notice should I give GWU for an "In the Area" email? If I will be in DC the first week of November, when should I start thinking about writing them?

Thanks.

I reserved a hotel near by GWU no I'm not concerned with commuting in between..but is there a public transportation that I can use to get from the airport to the hotel and back?

Not only do you have google at your disposal, but also two years worth of GW-specific thread to sift through for your answer.

Or you could just answer his question instead of being a dick...probably would take about the same amount of time as writing a rude, useless response

No one can answer this question for you, because we don't know where you're staying or what airport you're flying into. I'm sure there is public transport, but you'll have to look up the specifics yourself. Google Maps has a nice option to get your directions in terms of public transportation instead of by car.

Nothing about that was being a dick. Grow up and stop expecting to get spoon fed.

I'm with CsHead on this one. The guy/girl wanted specific public transportation information. Why would he/she expect a useful response to that on a pre-med forum? That's why google was invented. Also, the super helpful responses attacking CsHead still failed to answer the public transport question, so really the flaming is pretty hypocritical.

I didn't answer his question because I didn't know the answer. Maybe he shouldn't expect a useful response, but why write a useless one? To insinuate your superiority over him? If you know the answer just write it, stop with the pretentious e-bullying. Your response was a lot better than CsHead...it is laughable if he thinks writing "not only do you have google at your disposal blah blah blah" isn't being a dick

It's laughable that you believe my response was intended in that fashion and further your attempt to call me out in a public manner when this forum has a nice, working private messaging system speaks otherwise.

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

YESS!! A pissing contest!! Exactly what this thread needs. I'm with GBJ.

Hi, if you are flying into BWI, you would get into DC via Amtrack on weekends or the Mark train on weekdays (cheaper). I'm not sure about Dulles, I would call the hotel to ask because I'm sure that is a common question for them.

Yikes guys! Let's all be friends...And to redirect a little bit...

I still have the complete status and sent the in the area email Monday...still no word 🙁 but only a few of people posted this week about getting interviews...hmmm...I wish the rate of interviewing at Gtown and GW were similar haha would be easier on a lot of us huh?

I'm still waiting with the complete status too, but I won't be sending an "in the area" email unless I get switched to the "re-review" status.

Get me out of this hold for re-review!!!

Patiently waiting..... 🙁

You will get there pal 🙂 I know you will. Breathe through the process, relax, have fun. Its not a good idea to get stressed before medical school (which will be WAY more demanding and stressful of course).

We will make it through.

Hey everyone, if you do not like a comment/question or you are not interested in answering, do not respond. No one is forcing you to respond.

Lastly, "if you do not have anything nice to say, do not say it". Bloggers are people who have feelings too. Think about others before you say something. Respect each other's feelings and difference in viewpoint.

I have noticed disrespect in some threads in general. I feel it is necessary to speak up.

If you have anything else you want to say regarding this, feel free to post thoughtful responses. Otherwise, good luck to everyone and let's get through the application cycle with patience, hope, optimism, and happiness.

Have a good day.

Hey everyone,

i know you are prob sick of hearing about this ques but im kinda conflicted about what to write for the "significant achievement outside the classroom" ques.....initially i was going to write about how i'm trilingual and i used that skill to become a volunteer medical interpreter but i already talked about it in the extracurricular summaries for AMCAS (it was one of my most significant ECs). Is that too repetitive? 😳

OR...should i write about coming to the US from a foreign country and having to acclimatize and blah blah blah....problem with that is that i was 7 when i moved here...so kinda young to have rlly significant achievements?

Sorry for my long post!!!

Probably best not to repeat any info from your Primary. I had a couple written essays, and ended up choosing the one least related to medicine, but that was only my interpretation of the question. Good luck!

fly into Reagan. seriously. don't be seduced by slightly lower rates at BWI or Dulles. it is a huge pain to get from either of those places into the city especially during the work week. also Reagan is just a nice/efficient airport in general. the metro stops at the airport and GW and will cost 2-3 bucks.

I've lived in DC for about a year so if anyone else has logistical questions feel free to ask and I'll help as best I can.

hold for re-review here...getting really nervous now :/

Hold for re-review.
edit: completed Aug. 6

Yea...keep forgetting to relax.

Its because reading these posts on SDN makes me feel so behind on everything.

Thanks for the kind words!

haha I know how you feel...hang in there ... I'm looking forward to going sky diving when this is all over... or touring through East Asia if I have any money left haha maybe plan something fun to get through this!!!

good luck :xf:

GW must not be reviewing applications in chronological order. I was complete on 8/3 and was put on hold for re-review via status change 2-3 days after that.

I was complete 7/31 and no status change yet at all.
Just "complete and ready for review." 😕

I'll need some help navigating the non-metro aspect of DC.

1. I need to catch the 5A to Dulles bus after the interview at Roslyn. Is this easy? Do I need to buy a ticket far in advance?

2. Is there a place for suitcases at GW on interview day? I won't have time to go back to my room.

Anyone wanna split a hotel Sept 5th to 6th? And/or know a where to look for a good area to stay?

Been on hold for re-review a few weeks now. I'm still waiting on one more LOR to arrive, could that be why they haven't re-reviewed my application?

Interview Invite sent today! First one! Beyond pumped. Complete 8-6 for those who want to know.

I just attempted an "in the area" email... and it failed. They replied and I'm still on hold - they're holding their ground like pros. 🙂

Okay maybe a stupid question, but I'm unclear on one of the essay prompts.

"For the 2012-2013 application cycle (Summer 2012 through Summer 2013), please indicate activities, academics, employment, or other occupations to account for full-time activity (approx. 30-40 hours per week)"

Is this asking me to account for all my work, volunteering, etc. that adds up to at least 40 hours per week combined, or am I only to include my job which is 40 hours per week on its own?

I listed everything. Ended up with 50+ hours a week.

Put on the "re-review" waitlist. Lame!

Lot's of people that received re-review on this forum have gotten interviews, so no worries. I'm sitting on over 2 weeks without any change to my status, just complete and ready for review. When did you submit so that I can get an idea of when I should expect any news.

okay who am I gonna see on Tuesday? Getting pretty excited here!

I'll be there bright and early Tuesday...I'm very excited....and VERY nervous 😱
