Placed on hold today.....complete 8/29th (3.6/34 IS).

Kind of sucks...it's like they are telling you that you're not good enough but maybe they'll change their mind later. I thought I was a pretty good fit but guess not.

Hmm, maybe I could end up in a similar position. Complete 8/6: 3.6/3.76/35 IS. I've been under preliminary review for 10 weeks or so. I wish schools made it more clear what they're looking for, since MSU's 2009 stats (http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/faq/pages/competitive_faq.php) are 3.6/3.5/30 and likely slightly lower for IS students compared to OOS. And why won't they accept any updates or a LOI?!?! 🙁

i've been under prelim review since july buddy.. i just checked my status to make sure i didn't get rejected there.

hmm. i don't know what to make of this. sadly theirs was one of the first secondaries i completed, and i just read what i wrote... god awful 🙁

Congrats!!! I'm excited for you and I don't even know you! 🙂

Loved my interview day in GR! Loved the students, loved the school!
Fingers crossed for some love in return!

Congrats to those who have been accepted!
Hey, I was there then too! I concur, concur, and concur. MSU is an awesome school, and I loved the MMI. I hope I get accepted

Me too!
Loved the MMI, but I have no idea how I did! I'm hoping I didn't screw anything up royally!

Here's hoping we get some good news!

(brand new to the forum)

I'm in the same boat: complete since 7/26, still under preliminary review. I did read through some of the thread from last year's cycle though and it looked like a decent amount of people were just being contacted for an interview in January... so it looks like we're still in it? 👍

Can any current med students plugged into admissions stuff (or anyone for that matter) shed any light on whether MSU conducts any interviews during the week of Thanksgiving? I am a MI resident but go to school out of state, I will be home for the entire week of Thanksgiving and am wondering if it would be worth sending an in the area email?

On that note, can anyone with a recent interview invite share when they are currently scheduling interviews?

Thanks so much!

Going to be at EL on Friday, so excited and nervous ugh 😱

All of our interview days are on Fridays throughout the year and we have no classes Thurs/Fri of Thanksgiving week. My very educated guess is that no, CHM does not have any interview dates that week.

Thanks! I figured such but couldn't remember what days they did interviews so I thought I'd double check. Guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed!

Try not to get discouraged from being put on hold. I know plenty of people who were accepted off of hold.

And try not to get discouraged if you're rejected. It's not necessarily that you are a poor applicant, it's really that the applicant pool is ridiculously competitive and amazing. It only gets harder to gain acceptance every year. As someone who applied twice, I can tell you that applying to medical school is a very humbling experience, because you can do everything right and still not get in, and there will ALWAYS be someone with a better application than you.

I got the interview invite this morning for 11/2. I'm going to East Lansing from the Troy area which is a good hour+ drive. Is anyone else staying the night on Thursday???

Got the call tonight, missed the phone because I am OOS from the East Coast and dealing with Sandy. Very excited about the offer and all that MSU has to offer, Grand Rapids was extremely impressive. Good luck to everyone else!

MSU's interview day (at least in Grand Rapids) was a really long day and you want to be rested for it. I would highly recommend spending the night before and then you can drive back to Troy after.

Accepted earlier this evening! Pretty speechless!! Thank God

I interviewed in Grand Rapids on 10/5 they said we would probably hear on the 13th so it was a nice surprise that they got to me so quickly.

I meant what day was your application complete at the school! 🙂 like before they asked you for an interview

Wow sorry I was on an acceptance high. I received the secondary in mid July, submitted end of July, complete a few days after, and invite in mid September but that might be a bit out of the ordinary because I am OOS.

I missed the call earlier tonight, around 8pm. I was just leaving work, and I got a call from a 517 #, I checked my voicemail and Dr. Maurer's soft voice had me in suspense... I almost started hyperventilating by the time he got to "Congratulations, your going to be a doctor."
So stoked! Thank God

I interviewed in GR on 10/19. Super excited cuz they said to expect to hear around Nov 16, so the call came more than 2 weeks early! Good surprise

Congrats! When were you complete??
AMCAS processed it on 9/18, and I submitted the secondary 9/27. I rescheduled the interview for 11/9 which is in GR so I'm definitely staying the night now! Congratulations to everyone accepted! Any advice for interview day... especially the MMIs?

Those who were put on the alternate list--how were you notified of this? Email, status change??

do they accept LOI pre-interview?

They do not.

Source: Myself. I asked them about this about 2 months back, and they will not accept documents of any sort (LOI, in the area, updates) until you have an II or hold status.

I personally loved the MMI interview...I was a little stressed going into it since I had no idea what to expect, but the stations were actually really interesting (and more fun than the normal "tell me about yourself/activities interviews we're used to). Just make sure to go in with a positive attitude, and if you trip up on one station, forget it and don't dwell on it because there are 7 more you can make a great impression on! Good luck to those of you interviewing soon!

I got the acceptance phone call a couple days ago, which was really exciting because they told our group not to expect an answer until later in November. 10/19 interview date, complete end of July 🙂

Can any current students shed light on the things they really like and maybe dislike about the program?

Also, I just lost access to MSAR recently. Does anyone know historical stats on acceptances based on interviews at CHM?

Dr. Maurer (the Assistant Dean for Admissions) said last year MSU CHM got around 6300 applications, they interviewed about 500 and there are 200 spots b/t EL and GR. So if you get an interview, you have a 40% chance of getting in.

I don't understand your question. Also you mean michigan state?

Meaning, does michigan state send out statuses that say you have been rejected pre interview?

Can someone post the link to the status check page... I can't find the email with the link. Thanks.

If those numbers are right (and I'm pretty sure they are) then the post-interview chance of being accepted is higher than 40%. To fill a class of 200 students, MSU surely accepts more than than many because not everyone who is initially accepted will end up coming to school here. I'm sure the post-interview acceptance rate varies year to year, but my guess is that it's closer to 50% or even higher most years. Then again, this is just my guess, not fact.

I suggest reading through this thread and maybe last years thread as well. Many students (including myself) have already enumerated many of the pros and cons of CHM.

Best wishes.

From US News last year:

Applied: 6,256
Interviewed: 554
Accepted: 333
Enrolled: 200

So it looks like about 60% are accepted post-interview.

Except last year there was no MMI, so I believe they interviewed ~30 per week as opposed to >60 this year. So I wouldn't be surprised if that percentage went down...

So you're suggesting MSU is going to be interviewing over 1000 people this year simply because they switched to MMI? I would assume the numbers will remain relatively the same.

During the interview day they had the capacity to handle 40 interviews with MMI (give or take a few). My understanding is they are only doing one session a week so I do not believe that they are increasing their interview rate significantly. Their MMI format leads to a full day interview schedule (about 8-5) which was extremely informative so I don't think they will be adding to much more interview capacity. That said maybe one of the med students on here can shed a little bit of light.

Has anyone who interviewed in East Lansing been notified of acceptance?

Does anyone know if people who are put on hold for re-review are reviewed periodically? Or are their files just not looked at again until February?

Also, the hold email I received says this:
"Please do not submit any additional information unless it is requested. We consider your application complete and all unsolicited material will be discarded."

However, I saw in this thread that people called the admissions office and they said that updates would be accepted from people placed on hold?

Here is what an email I received pertaining to updates said:

"As to updating your application, we are pleased to hear that you are still working toward your goal of entering medical school by your ongoing professional accomplishments, additional coursework and/or activities. The College of Human Medicine, however, considers an applicant’s AMCAS application to be complete at the time it is submitted for verification. We only accept unsolicited additional materials when an applicant is placed on the alternate list. If the college review committee would like additional information in support of your application, you will be contacted."

Hope that clears it up. Sounds similar to what they already told you.

Yes, I interviewed 9/14 in East Lansing and was accepted 9/25.

Accepted 9/25? IMPOSSIBRU!

No but really, unless firedoc was an Early Decision Application (which makes them an exception anyways), the first acceptances weren't allowed to be given out until 10/15 at any allopathic medical school.
