I haven't heard ANYTHING from them since I was accepted! I even sent them a "hey could you please confirm that you got my signed offer of acceptance letter back" email and NOTHING. A little concerning, but...

I thought the acceptance letter told us only to send the signed form during the first two weeks of May... I read it as they didn't want responses to admission offers until then.

You can't pay the $100 DEPOSIT until May 1st (and it's due May 15th). But they want the signed form back within 2 weeks!

Oh i see. Postmarked? Bc, i bes be gettin' on dat train. toot toot.

Yea, I'm assuming that must be the case. Just looked at my letter again. It states "Please complete the attached "Acceptance Reply Form" and return it within two weeks."

So I'm guessing that must mean from the postmarked date.

Give them a call and ask if they got the letter. Afterwards, they will send an email to confirm that they received it.

just got an email from admissions about the official 2017 fb group!

Shadow-a-student day was amazing! Really showed me what Downstate is all about. I recommend to all those accepted applicants.

If i interviewed on early january, when can I expect decision? =]

+1. Also, do decisions go out via snail mail or email? And if they don't make a decision on you and put you on hold for the next adcom meeting, do they notify you of that? Thanks.

Decisions usually take six weeks. For some it had taken longer but that's what it took for me and several others.

If you read back through the thread, you'll see that everyone got their acceptances by snail mail and "wait lists" and rejections by email. They do not let you know if you've not been reviewed yet. Waitlist is more like a hold for re-review at a later date in the spring.

They finally responded to my e-mail confirming that they received my acceptance reply form, but addressed the email to the wrong name. As in, if my name were Allison they addressed it to Nicole. Hooo boy, these people are a little bit of a mess!

I spoke to my friend who is a MS2 student at Downstate. Here is what I learn about the problem.

The hospital only serves ppl with no insurance; hospital closing is bound to happen, but if they close it down, where will these ppl go? it's a dilemma. The administration is kinda facing a GM like crisis. The employee compensation is ridiculous, and they over hired for the same position. For example, they just cut the employee vaca days from 60 to 45. The research foundation has a lot of money and the medical college has endowments from alumni, but the hospital is definitely sinking. So the finances is pretty complicated. Rest assure, this should not impact the pre-clinical years, but highly the latter two. If the hospital does close, the clerkships would be a little further away, but there's always Kings County Hospital across the street.

Downstate's fame for good clinical training doesnt come without a price. As sub-i in internal med, you get on avg of a 8 patients, whereas at other schools, 4 may be already too much.

Third year Downstate student posting:

LICH is a great hospital, but due to its location it competes pretty heavily with Manhattan hospitals. It does seem likely to close unless Governor Cuomo gets involved to keep it open, which is what happened the first time around where Gov. Patterson helped broker a deal for Downstate to purchase LICH. We do have clinical rotations at LICH but it is only one of half a dozen hospitals Downstate students can rotate through. However, it is the most cushy place to do IM and surgery, so we will all be very sad to see it go.

Also, Downstate sub-I's don't carry 8 patients; they carry about 4-5. As a third-year you carry up to 3. Sub-I's are all about getting your skills up to speed so you can handle the work of an intern. Personally, I wouldn't want to be at a hospital that only lets you carry 3 patients because it's going to be even harder to make that jump. Downstate clinical experience rocks, you see **** you don't see anywhere else. Many patients come straight from international flights from JFK to "visit their cousin" but also take care of their fungating tumor.

PM me if you have specific questions about the school.

Also the hospital's finances are quite complex which even the new President would dare to try to explain so simply. Even Lenox Hill on the upper east side of Manhattan that caters to celebrities was in dire finances until LIJ bought them out recently. Downstate has been around for a long time and I would be very surprised to see it go just like that.

For those that interviewed...approx. how long were the interviews itself?

Mine was around an hour too. I would say anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour is probably normal though, since you only have one interview here there's nothing else really to compare it with and I'm sure all of the faculty are different.

Good luck!

Thanks, mine is in a couple of weeks and I'm starting to prepare for it

Decisions go out via snail mail. Not sure about the hold though.

Interviewed 12/17.
Accepted via snail mail 2/02.

Friendly faculty interviewer; interview was very conversational, lasted 30 minutes.

Super excited. Good luck to all!

Interviewed mid December. Came home to an acceptance snail mail today.

What's are the stats of some excepted students? I have an interview but my mcat was really bad although i already got a couple acceptances and I wanted to know if I still have a chance. This is my top choice!

If you have an interview you definitely have a chance. Don't worry about stats at this point, just do well in the interview and you should be golden. Good luck!

Yea from what I've seen so far, email decisions (hold/rejection) gets sent 5-6 weeks and acceptances takes slightly longer.

Did anyone that interviewed in January hear back yet???

My decision took 12 weeks. it really depends on who interviewed you and if they are willing to pencil in a meeting with the admissions committee to talk about your application

Wow, mine only took about 4 so it definitely varies like everyone has been saying.

this might have been covered already, but what exactly does the "hold until spring" signify? does that mean we are waitlisted or will we be reviewed again in may only to be waitlisted?

From Downstate's website, hold post-interview means:

"I received a decision email stating that my application is on hold after interview. Is this an alternate list?
No, it means that your application will be reviewed again in late May and at that time a decision will be made as to whether you will be offered a place on the alternate list."

cool, thanks!

I've been doing a bit more research on what being on hold for spring consideration means... It seems like last year there was a SUNY Downstate Waitlist thread in which there was a clear difference between the alternate list and the hold for spring consideration list. Judging by this year's thread, I've only seen acceptances, hold for spring and/or rejections -no alternate... Did I miss something or is Downstate not using the term "alternate list" until later on in the cycle? Here's the thread I am referring to....

Woke up to a email from SUNY Downstate Admissions today...Turned out to just be a email about submitting a application to the MPH program. Still on the hold list for spring 🙁

Hang in there! Keep sending those updates and you'll be fine. Best of luck. :luck:

I got that e-mail as well. I would guess that they sent that to everyone currently on the hold list? Either way the hold list isn't looking like such a great spot to be in right now, but all we can do is wait and hope for the best!

I'm on hold and got the email as well. The problem for me right now with the hold list is that I have acceptances to, in many ways, better schools, but they lack the location of downstate. Though I know I can accept after already committing to one school I feel like it will be a much harder decision then. Having an acceptance now in hand would allow me to better research where I want to go and evaluate my options. Anyone have thoughts on applying for MD/MPH program increasing chances of Acceptance before May? I've been considering an MPH and intend to apply to joint programs wherever I get into.

students received this email today in regards to the financial situation at downstate

This morning, the SUNY Board of Trustees voted to approve the closure of the Long Island College Hospital site. This is a necessary part of our hospital restructuring as we move to strengthen Downstate for future growth.

We know that many of you are asking whether this development will affect clinical training. We want to assure you that the LICH closure will proceed in an orderly fashion, and there will be no interruption of your education.

We are working with our network of affiliated hospitals to secure placement for all students scheduled for rotations at LICH.

We also want to assure you that all of our colleges are not only in good shape, but in better shape than ever before. We continue to receive record numbers of applicants to our programs. Our graduating students score higher than the national average on board and licensure exams and are in high demand by residency programs, hospitals, and other employers. We continue to make improvements to our academic facilities to enhance the learning environment and quality of Downstate’s education programs.

Because we have strong relationships with our affiliates, the closure of any one single training site will not affect the overall strength of Downstate’s education programs.

Please feel free to contact your college dean or your academic advisor with any questions you may have.

I know of a few students in the MD/MPH program who were waitlisted and later accepted in the spring. If you actually have some interest in public health, it's not a bad idea to apply to the program since, as I understand it, you can simply withdraw your spot if you don't get into the MD program. I'm pretty sure every MD candidate who applies is accepted to the MPH portion.

Any hope for an interview at this point? Still waiting to hear back from Downstate! In-state, 3.8/30T

just got an email from admissions about the official 2017 fb group!

Hey guys, congrats to those of you who have been accepted to Downstate, and fingers crossed for those of you still waiting!

The way the Downstate FB group works is that the school makes an official FB group, and the students make an unofficial one.

Every year, students mainly use the unofficial one so that we can discuss things on an unofficial basis with no affiliation to the school. Last year, one of the MS1s on the 2015 Med Council made the Class of 2016 unofficial Facebook group for us and we have been using it prolifically ever since. Please also join the official group to get information straight from the school/administration!

Since I am on the 2016 Med Council, maybe I could make one for you guys if it doesn't exist yet... It's the circle of life.

Here is the Class of 2017 student-run Facebook group!

Thanks you!! I hope all goes well this is my top choice!

I feel a little like I'm beating a dead horse because I know this was discussed a lot, but do we find out rejections by email and acceptances by snail mail? I interviewed 1/29 and I have my fingers crossed, this is definitely my top choice.

if it was discussed a lot and you read the discussions then why exactly are you asking again?

But yes dear, rejections and hold lists are by email and acceptances by snail. Average of 6 or so week responses for everyone, so you might have some time left, although I don't know it they pick up the pace towards the end.

Ah thank you for indulging a dumb question! I am definitely obsessing...
