I just recently submitted my secondary app after sitting on it for a while. I called Carver and was dealing with different departments to ascertain what my chances are for an ii this late in the game. I just have to say that Carver has some of the nicest and outgoing staff and students I have come across in this entire application season. To those who have been accepted and those whom will be, congrats! And I am sure you will be joining a wonderful organization!

...was stalking last year's thread... Have we talked about this "random 25" idea for the weekly committee meeting? It seems like the assumption has been that the order of review is definitely chronological, but that does not seem to be the case for last year(?).

I met with Barbara in early November when I passed through Iowa City. I interviewed on 9/19. Once you interview, you're placed into an in-state pile or an out-of-state pile. The files that are presented to the full committee are chosen by a subcommittee member. This is done without regard to who interviewed first.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah, I definitely don't think it's chronological. Who knows what criteria they use.

That's great to know--thanks!

I was thinking about this further: "without regard to who interviewed first" doesn't mean "random." It could just as easily (and perhaps more likely) imply a value to post-interview applicants. I don't know if last year somebody heard it was random or they inferred it from other info, but it seemed to send a lot of people into thinking "random" was the order of the day.

#overanalysis

Subcommittee members choose which files to bring to full committee meetings each week. Their is no process by which they select these files each week. That's what I meant by random.

Oh--I wasn't implying that you said anything about it being random. Last year people created a dichotomy between it either being completely random or chronological. All I'm saying from your information is that perhaps there's a third way: subcom members choose based on their preferences/interest in the applicant.

Possible?

Secondary submitted: I think...10/1
II: 10/6 (It took 5 days to get the interview. I was shocked)
Interviewed 11/14
Accepted 12/ (4th or 5th)

OOS: 3.8+ / 33

Good luck everyone. This program is amazing. The LCs are absolutely top notch. The MERF building is top notch and everybody is super nice. Also, getting accepted means you automatically gain access to some of the best labs. There will be plenty of opportunity to work on an interesting project and also publishing. Still waiting to interview at other places, but it is unlikely that I'll find a place better than this. Very humbled to received an offer from a place like this.

Yes I am having trouble logging in with the hawk id.

Congrats!!

On the hawk ID thing, I just called that tech support number and had them change my password.

Was just thinking: of course Christmas/New Year's had to land on a Tuesday this season. 👎

Yeah that's unfortunate. I called them the other day and they said my file hasn't even been reviewed since my interview. I interviewed in the very first week, way back in September. It's just frustrating that they don't review applicants in order. It drives me crazy seeing people get accepted to interviewed later than me knowing that my file hasn't even been looked at by the committee yet. #endrant

Wow, they'll tell you if your file has been reviewed? Interesting. Yes, it definitely sucks. Interviewed 9/21--just torture.

Thanks for the cathartic moment of commiseration. 👍

Yep she said she could tell me if it was in review or if a decision had been made, and mine was neither of those, so that means they haven't reviewed it yet.

You interviewed the same week as me! :highfive:

Hopefully we'll find out soon... but just in case... does anyone remember the date that they'll tell us we're in the final pool or whatever it is?

Interviewed on 9/19. I'm an IS applicant. Haven't been reviewed yet either. Let's hope for something tomorrow!

Nice--it was a good week! I may or may not have stalked the crap out of the last 2 years' threads yesterday while snowed in all day (I had already cleaned every surface in the house and done 3 loads of laundry), and I'm pretty sure it was the 2nd or 3rd week in January that they sent out final pool notices. Hopefully we hear good news before then! 👍

Wow--IS here too, and I can only assume the same for futchadoc judging from the avatar. I seem to recall either last year or two years ago that the OOS bunch was heavily favored before Christmas time. Maybe that's going on again, or maybe I'm just not aware of many IS acceptances thus far.

...or maybe they just don't like us...😛

Yep I'm IS as well and interviewed the same day as HawkDoc. It seems to be that way to me as well right now - mainly OOS or IS with >30 MCATs being accepted. It's kind of obnoxious. I'm spoiled because I applied DO this round as well and most of the DO schools will make a decision within 2-4 weeks of your interview. I have a deposit due at a DO school in 5 days so hopefully I hear some good news from Iowa tomorrow before I have to put down my deposit....... but probably not

All the more--here's to hopin' for good news tomorrow! 👍

Sorry to hear that. I'm sure good news is awaiting you. If you're IS and received an interview, you have a very strong chance of getting accepted. Good luck!!

I'm in the same boat!! Nice to hear back so early, but since Iowa is my top choice, it's hard being patient, too! Good luck!!! 🙂

This is interesting. I called them and they said that I am "in review." So this means I have been reviewed and passed over? Or have I not been sent to the committee yet and might not until Jan?

Did you just call today?

I would interpret that to mean that your application is before the adcom today, no?

Jealous.

Im not sure, she didnt really make it sound like that. It sounded as if everyone who has been reviewed (and did not get accepted) remains "in review" until Jan. But I'm not sure...thoughts?

That certainly sounds like a reasonable interpretation. I guess it's not clear from what people have heard in the past whether you continually are considered for admission once first reviewed or simply final pooled if not accepted initially. Since they likely have so many applications to review, I would think the latter (and therefore, when she said your application is "in review" it was merely code for "sorry, you were final pooled").

?

Can I ask who you called? Because I just tried calling the admissions office to check my status and the lady who answered said she couldn't tell me anything about whether or not I have or have not been reviewed. I interviewed on Oct. 3 and also have to deposit at another school this week. Pretty frustrating.

Oh cool we interviewed the same day! Unfortunately I have no idea who I spoke with, it was just the general admissions number. I asked if there was any way I could be notified on the status of my secondary and that I interviewed Oct 3rd. To that they stated I was "in review" which Im assuming just means complete. Im assuming ErrantWhatever is correct that I am basically in the final pool and will be a/wl/r in Jan. So even if they will tell you that it might not really help with your deposit issue. On a positive note, congrats on one acceptance 🙂

Soooooo...nobody on here heard anything today? I assume they met, but what do I know?

This is super frustrating!!

Also when I called the other day the lady said it's "not uncommon" to have interviewed very early like I did and not have a decision made on your file until the spring. It seems to me like Iowa accepts a few people and puts everyone else in the final pool.....

Yes. Yes it is(!!!). I don't know why, but I got really into this today. Ah well! Thanks for the info--seems like an accurate statement from what I perused of the past 2 years' threads.

I can confirm that is the case. I went to Iowa and my premed advisor told me that most of Iowa's acceptances come from the final pool in March. With that in mind, most of us probably still have a long wait until we receive a decision.

Anyone know if the ADCOM is meeting tomorrow? Or are they on break already?

Updated my secondary with grades and whatnot. Hoping that gets me some love here in the form of an interview

Is it Tuesday again already?

Tuesday came and went with no news. I figured the committee probably wouldn't meet again since Iowa students have been on break for a few days now. Ah well. Everyone have a happy holiday season and here's hoping to good news in the new year!

Moved to the final pool, just found out today. Interviewed 11/14. Will not find out until March. Good luck, everyone.
