Does anyone know the average indebtedness for OOS? Would I pretty much just add 30-40 thousand to the figure on US News?

Yep, this is the case. I've been told this by many who are connected to Iowa's program.

I'm IS and was final pooled yesterday, also. Bummed of course, but realize it's better than rejection and most IS acceptances come from final pool. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Good luck to all of you!

Dang. that doesnt spell good things for me (OOS), since they didn't give me an acceptance in the initial phase. Been final pooled.

Here's hoping for the best.

I'd also like to know. I remember *faintly* on interview day that they try to help OOS students a bit more financially to offset the cost difference between OOS and IS tuition. Of course, I could've been dreaming that.

I'm OOS and interviewing tomorrow. I'll tell you what I know then! 🙂

I remember asking at the financial aid session but wasn't given a clear answer. Hopefully you can dig it out Einstien.

Final pooled on 1/23 as well. IS, interviewed 9/19.

Typically about 2/3 of a given class at CCOM comes from the final pool in case anyone was wondering.

Good luck everyone!

Alright OOSers - here we go.

The average debt students graduate with is ~155k. I asked if there was a significant difference between the debt incurred by IS v OOS students - was told not really, nothing significant. Less than 20k. No exact numbers, though.

CCOM has a lot of donors, and they have some ~4.4 million dollars in scholarships/grants to give out (it wasn't stated explicitly, but I assume this is between all 4 years of students). We were also told that when determining our aid packages, the tuition of OOS students is greater, so they demonstrate more need and often get more scholarships/grants. That was pretty much the extent it was covered during the formal presentations.

Luckily, one of my student tour guides was OOS and I asked him about it. He said he got 13k in scholarships/grants, so his tuition was pretty much that of an IS student. He also said that seemed to be the case for most of the OOS students.

On a side note, I don't know if your tour guides showed you/told you on the tour, but you'll never need to buy textbooks. They have multiple (and my multiple, I mean A LOT) of copies of all the textbooks that you can rent for the semester. When they showed us, there were still a ton left, so I'm pretty sure that everyone rents them and there's enough to go around. My tour guides basically told us to completely eliminate the 5k budgeted for textbooks for M1 year from our budget, and the budgeted amount for books from every year after that as well. Definitely something to consider as well.

Hope that helped you guys. Keeping my fingers crossed until mid-March when we get those letters! GO HAWKS!

Hi Einsteine, Did you stay at the Iowa House Hotel during your visit? if so, are parking free?
I'm vising there this Sunday and the student ambassador housing haven't emailed me back yet. Might have to stay at a hotel overnight.

The only caveat to not buying your books is that, should you have to refer to something come boards time, you are at the mercy of the book availability. Food for thought...

I stayed at the Iowa House Hotel during my interview. Yes, parking is free, but they only give you two free "tickets" to leave the parking garage.

Thanks! Is it within walking distance to MERF? If so, how long?

Yes, I would approximate it at 10-15 minutes, depending on your walking speed. Check out google maps. I stayed there after the interview.

It's about a 10-15 minute walk. But they offer a free shuttle to MERF. Basically someone at the front desk drives you there and you can just call them when you're ready to get picked up.

Anybody here interested in the pre-M1 summer research fellowship?

This is true. I think Hardin (the health sciences lib) also has multiple copies of each book available. The M2s that I know haven't had a problem with renting any book they needed for boards studying, but I'm sure that also varies from person to person!

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that if you havent gotten an II yet, more than likely you wont?

I'll just ask for a shuttle or drive there. 10-15 minutes walking in a suit doesn't sound so great :scared:

I believed the last date they had for interview is the 28th of January.

I think so. After Jan 28, they are putting everyone in final pools...

How much money does it cost to rent the textbooks?

Really? That sucks. I have an interview scheduled for tomorrow but I'm thinking I might have to cancel because this winter storm isn't looking like it'll be very kind to drivers at all. My entire path is covered by the ice and ice/snow mix regions.

Ohhhh--that would not be cool. I'm also debating the planned return today--the Iowa roads where I am are a sheet of ice, and the weather map is not looking good.

Good luck!

If you are using the shuttle, be sure to check with the front desk at least one hour before your desired leaving time to ensure the shuttle is still available. The morning of my interview one of the desk workers called in sick, so they could no longer offer the shuttle ride. Luckily I had time to change plans!

Yeah, it's not looking good for me. I live in Wisconsin so just as the storm is leaving Iowa and the roads might start improving, it's happening all over again here. I'm trying to hold out as long as possible but I don't know how long I can wait to cancel my hotel reservation (at the Heartland Inn) without incurring a fee or anything. Anybody happen to know the answer to that? I couldn't find anything on their website.

That really sucks. I just decided to stick around another day before heading back to MN--I heard I-35 is horrible right now.

Not sure what to tell you. I bet no one is answering phones or emails at Carver today, and I'm sure you're not alone. If it's true that this is the last interview day, I probably would have just headed out this morning and taken twice as long to make happen. However, I would have to think they would be understanding and try to reschedule (????). I'm not sure what the roads are like down near IC, but I'm in NW IA and everything is covered in ice.

Game-time decision. Good luck!

How crucial are update letters with grades and letters of interest for us OOSers in the final pool? Any thoughts?

My thoughts on LOIs are that they can't hurt, especially if you're OOS, and they could even give you that slight edge over the next person who didn't send one. I have two friends who are currently M1s at Iowa from other states and I remember hearing from them how persistent they were when they applied last cycle when it came to sending updates and LOIs. I know I'm only speaking from a specific standpoint but I hope that helps. I'm IS and I sent one immediately after getting the final pool email so here's hoping. I think the final pool is a pretty good place to be at this point because we could have been outright rejected after the adcom reviewed our applications! Everyone in the final pool needs some :luck:, and some 😴 (if you're anything like me) and some :welcome: from CCOM!!

i sent two update letters .... last one was was last week after the final pool.

They both hinted slightly at my interest in the school (but not really... looking back i regret not writing more) but at the same time i didn't want to write SOOOO much.

And now... I could write a letter of interest (before they close submissions)... but i feel it would be too close to my update letter

Rejection letter today via snail mail. Actually received an acceptance today so that easily overrides the bad news 🙂 Good luck everyone! 32//3.76 OOS

Submitted 8/24
Complete 9/24
Letter Dated: 1/22/13

Were you post interview?? Or is this pre-interview?

Anyone have any idea about how many IS applicants get out and out rejected from the final pool?

Hey does anybody know what the deal is for sending in $100 once you've been accepted? Can you do this online?

There is no deposit required. Just email and say you accept their offer of admission. 🙂

Say What?

From the final pool, you can be accepted, wait listed or rejected. I know the wait list typically is composed of about 30 to 40 individuals, but I didn't know a) how many IS applicants go into the final pool, and of those b) how many end up getting accepted or rejected.

I'm very interested in it. Have you talked to Judy about anything in these regards besides whats posted? I know Pre-M1's are supposed to email her prior to applying...

I asked what the start date was since there weren't any definitive dates stated on that page. Apparently most kids start on May 13th, which may be a problem for me because my graduation is May 11, and I'm OOS and live 600 miles away. 🙁

First acceptance and first time posting on SDN! Acceptance came yesterday via e-mail.

For others accepted, when is the second look date? Also is there a FB group already created?

The final pool email also states ,"These decisions are final and will be sent by US mail. We will not give out decisions over the phone or by email."
