Anyone know how many they accepted off the alt. list last year?

So just got my packet with invitation to second look day and insurance stuff but no financial aid packet. When did everyone else get theirs/ do I have to print it from online?

Accepted Last week to CCOM. Got really lucky on my interview. So there's hope for people who don't have crazy stats to get into Med School. 🙂

IS
GPA: 3.43
MCAT: 30P

If you login to ISIS, there is a financial aid link under the Student Records tab. You can get the IVF form for financial aid there. Be sure to change the semester setting to Fall 2013 to find the form.

Anyone know what you're supposed to do for financial aid if you're waitlisted? Is FAFSA all that we are able to submit at this point?

I received my ISIS login last week via email but it isn't working. Any other newly accepted students having this problem or have some advice?

I had this exact thing happen to me last week. I called and admissions and they forwarded me to the university technology service who reset my password for me

Ahh okay! I will call tomorrow about that. Thanks so much!

Has anyone who emailed to keep a spot on the waitlist gotten a response? I know they're on break this week, but I was still expecting some sort of confirmation email.

I have not gotten a response. Makes me kind of nervous.

Just called the registrar and found out it is impossible to get IS unless you are willing to take a year off to work even if your spouse will be working in the state and supporting you. Bummer

if you do a year off for research after 2nd year you could technically transfer to IS tuition.

Well time to swallow the pill and say it. Rejected IS. However, the reason I am posting is to let those of us who got that lovely letter "sarcasm" and are planning to reapply for next year, I would recommend that you go in and talk to the admissions officers. Give them a call and set up an appointment and find out what happened with your application. The lady I spoke with was incredible and managed to somehow make me feel like I am not a failure. She told me exactly what I needed to fix and let me know that if I fixed three things that I would be in a good spot for next year. I just need to add on shadowing, fix the physics portion of the MCAT, and keep a steady upward or consistent trend on my GPA for this semester. Knowing what I need to do and knowing that I actually knocked the interview out of the park and that my letters of recommendation were great helped me a lot. The meeting gave me the motivation I needed to get my butt in gear over the next few months and get it done. So if you are applying again next year to CCOM then I can not stress enough how much you should go meet with them to find out what you need to do. Oh and the admissions officer will also write a note in your file or something to that affect showing that you spoke with them and that shows initiative! So for everyone that was accepted this year congrats and to those that are applying with me next year again lets get it done!

Just called to check my waitlist spot....I've moved up to #29 on the in-state list! Started at #33...looks like four people decided not to stay on the in-state list. Yesterday was the deadline for deciding to stay on the list or not!

I agree with Labrine; I've heard that they really appreciate people that go in and ask what to change about their application, and they also are very helpful!

I was accepted this year. IS-- GPA 3.93 / MCAT 27Q. I have never posted my stats before, but I wanted to post them so that the people that creep this thread next year know that it is not impossible to get into medical school with just a decent MCAT score! It was really helpful for me throughout this whole year to see stats from last year, so I hope this helps someone out next year!

Can't wait to start in the fall!

I did this last year too and it was sooooo helpful for deciding what to improve/change this year. I hadn't realized how bad my interview was. I really don't like to talk about myself, so in the interview, I came off as super shy and they said they wish I would have elaborated more on pretty much everything I said. She helped me to realize that the interview is not the time to be shy or to be worried about talking about yourself, so I think my improved interview was the reason I got a decent waitlist spot this year.

Congrats! I moved up to #15 from #19. Must resist calling every day to check my spot.....

2 bedroom/ 2 bathroom House for sale:

Congrats to everyone accepted! I just recently graduated from UI med school so I'm putting up my duplex for sale. It's located in Iowa City in a neighborhood mostly with med and dental students, about 2 miles away from campus, on the bus line, and close to the grocery store/restaurants/shopping.

PM me for more info. Thanks!

Hey everyone, I am a current Uof I MS2 posting about some apartment vacancies. In a nutshell the landlord of the crazy lady who lives above me is going to not renew crazy lady's lease if I can fill the unit with non-crazy professional students. The unit (and I think he has more than 1 just like it.... but I want the one above me filled first :meanie: ) is really nice. Wood floors, fireplace, 3 bedroom 2 bath, 2-car garage detached with free parking in the lot and on street for guests or tenants (kind of a big thing in Iowa City....). 30 min walk to the hospital and medical school or 5 min bus ride with the stop literally just outside the front door of the building and stopping directly behind MERF. I think he wants something like $1400/month so $466/person/month.

PM me if you want his contact info or want to ask questions. There are about 6 other units in the complex rented or owned by other UofI med students of various years.
And congrats on acceptances!

Any of you planning to attend Get Acquainted Day? I just RSVPed for Saturdays events, and have no clue what to wear! I know they say dress casually... is that like I can wear jeans, or I need to dress business casual? haha I never really know what that means. If someone has an idea, let me know!

I'm getting really excited-- I can't wait to meet all of you!

Do any of you have Iowa Med e-mail addresses yet? If so, how did you go about getting that set up?

I'm still waiting on financial aid to come out before I can fully commit to Iowa. 🙁 It's difficult trying to find a roommate/housing.

I was planning on wearing some nice jeans with a button up or sweater. Honestly I wouldn't stress about it because they said in the letter to dress comfortable and casual. Other 2nd look days I'm going to have said specifically either business professional or business casual. Iowa just wants casual so enjoy it 🙂

The day seems like it is getting done pretty early. Is there going to be any after-hang or anything like that?

Edit: So I ended up checking my financial aid too soon. I did not get an email but instead went online and saw my letter was posted. Apparently this ended up not being the final letter as the next day the award changed (first time all federal loans, next time a substantial grant!). A few days later I received an official email from financial aid notifying me my award was ready.

Lesson learned lol...don't jump the gun!

Just received my financial aid award. I have to say it was disappointing: all federal loans and no grants/scholarships. After this information, I will most likely be withdrawing. Carver is a wonderful school though and I know you all are going to get a top notch education. Best of luck to you all!

And hopefully my pending withdrawal will speed up some OOS waitlist movement! 🙂

Did you receive an email? I'm still waiting on financial aid :scared:

Nope no email. (Edit: There is an email. Wait until you receive it before checking!) Just log into ISIS and go to the financial aid status. It should give you the option of viewing your award.

I like Iowa so much I'm still going to go to second look and hold off on withdrawing. One more chance Iowa 🙂 lol

Sorry to hear about the lack of love in the money department. Does anyone know if they will reconsider financial awards if your situation changes a lot by next year? For example if you are getting married and won't be supported by your parents at all? I'm afraid my parent 's income is going to ruin my chances of getting anything this year, but I'd love if I could get another shot once I get married this summer.

Edit: also when did you submit your financial aid application? I'm probably going to be checking Isis almost every day now haha

All of the medical schools I interviewed look at my parents' information even though I've been married for a couple years, so getting married will probably make it worse for you. They'll consider what your parents make AND what your wife makes as potential financial support. Very frustrating.

But congrats on the engagement!

My application was complete on March 15. Yea I'm sad that they weren't able to offer me a little more. I was under the impression that they tried to help OOS students out a lot with the grants/scholarships since we demonstrate more financial need (higher tuition). Also, I was hoping that the recruitment factor/small number of OOS students meant there was more money to give out. 🙁 (Edit: Jumped the gun here! Patience is a virtue.)

I'm wondering if awards can change before the may 15 deadline, say if an OOS acceptee declines their offer and their grant/scholarship comes back into play. Thoughts?

Wow maybe I'll have to complain on SDN if I don't like mine either 😉 congrats!

Financial Aid came in.

Looks like I'm going to be an Iowan next year 😀

Anyone going to the dinner tonight? My wife and I will be there. Looking fwd to it!

👍

On another note, just received the "your award is ready" email from financial aid 🙂

Have any people gotten the actual financial aid packages yet? Did it come as just a letter or did they also let you know online?

I received mine a couple weeks ago. I just found it by logging into ISIS, and then received an email about it a few days later. However, on the page to view my award there is still a note that it is subject to change.

withdrew from oos waitlist. was #14 or 15 I think.
best of luck! Iowa's a great place.

Did you go to the financial aid presentation at second look day? They mentioned that they had IT problems and to not trust what we saw on ISIS. They had us ask them directly about our financial packages, but mine wasn't done yet. I might call in to check on that

My financial aid came in on the 9th of April, so before Get Acquainted Day. I received an email from Linda, and just received letter in the mail today. I got all of my stuff in rather early.

I was at second look and spoke to Linda who gave me a copy of the award. It was the same as the one I received when i checked the second time/when I got the award email (which is great because financial aid was very generous! 🙂). Haven't received a letter though...maybe I will in the coming days.

Edit: Just checked the mail and I received the award letter.

Hey all!

I'm Justin, an M2 at CCOM. I'm posting this in case you couldn't come to campus for Get Acquainted Day or if you're on the waitlist (hang tight!). You might be unsure of great housing options for the next few years, so try considering the two medical fraternities, Phi Rho Sigma or Alpha Kappa Kappa! Both are co-ed professional fraternities that house 20+ medical students from all years (M1-4), which gives you a leg up on meeting new people and really helpful insight into med school by those who came before you.
Since I'm the Phi Rho treasurer, I'll talk about the things that made it easy for me to live at PRS, specifically, for the last two years, and stay for the next:

- Location, location, location: PRS is located a 3-4 minute walking distance away from the Medical Education and Research Facility - it's just about the closest you can live to campus.
- We have a cook: Our full-time chef makes us 13 meals a week, two per day except for Friday night! And there's so much extra food in the pantry you never go hungry.
- Quiet environment: Since everyone in PRS is a medical student, your priorities are always aligned - the house is quiet and you can easily study in CCOM buildings at night because we're so close by.
- Study Room: It contains a library donated by previous students, as well as two microscopes, which make it easy to study histology without returning to campus at night.
- Workout Center: Both fraternities have an exercise room with treadmills and free weights, and both are expanding their equipment lineup every year!
- On-site laundry: We bought a new industrial washer/dryer set last year and not coincidentally, I have never felt so fresh.

Base rent for Phi Rho Sigma is $540/mo! When you consider that it includes electricity, water, wireless internet, food, optional cable TV, and all in a package that is almost literally the closest you can live to campus, it's pretty much a steal. We have about five open spots left, so if you're interested or have questions, feel free to PM me, email [email protected], or visit our web site at www.phirhosigmaiowa.com! Hope to hear from all of you soon!

Still waiting for financial aid package to come 🙁 submitted mine in late march which was as early as I could due to my parents tax stuff. Has anyone else heard back except for jcaptian and toad? If you wouldn't mind saying when you submitted your ivf and when/how you heard back it would be much appreciated!

I just wanted to chime in on the financial stuff.

I received a full-ride notification as of 2 weeks ago. Definitely attending Carver!

Interviewed October
Accepted December
CA resident

I look forward to meeting my future classmates this August! It's gonna be an awesome 4 years woohoo!

Withdrew my acceptance yesterday. Hopefully one of you gets the spot!

Same here!! Oh wait nvm just dreaming 😀 congrats though

Just withdrew my OOS offer.

Good luck to those on the waitlist!

Two things:

1) I called and talked to people in financial aid and admissions and everyone is SO nice! Constantly. Other schools I've felt like I have to apologize just for calling with a question. The people I talked to were willing to answer all my questions and still just talk some more ably my life/ decision process. Very cool.

2) Was awarded a nice sized scholarship today! Looks like I'll be a hawkeye next year!

2.5) For those wondering, whenever someone with a scholarship withdraws, they award that money to someone else

Awarded a Dean's scholarship this morning! 🙂 Wow Carver is so generous! Feeling very blessed. They do their best to make it financially affordable to attend medical school.

Congrats! Yeah I'm very impressed by their financial aid office. It seems like they give a lot of love to the OOSer's and also to those of us who are disqualified from need based financial.
