Does anyone know if there is a student host program at UKY? I'm interviewing on October 8th and am trying to decide if I should book a hotel now. Thanks!

There was when I interviewed last year. I got an email about it when i got my interview confirmation. You may try giving the admissions office a call-- they're very nice and helpful.

If you've already interviewed, when is the earliest you will receive a call? Does anyone know if they even call if you get wait listed or rejected?

If you get waitlisted you'll get an email about it. Last year I got waitlisted (email) then rejected (snail mail) This year I got accepted (phone call). Did they tell you when the admission committee was going to meet? They called me the day of their meeting though I was Early Acceptance. If you interviewed for Regular Acceptance they may not have their first meeting for a while.

The admission committee is meeting this Friday, so if you are an early decision applicant you can go ahead and call them at the end of this week.

The admin told us decisions on regular applicants are released starting October 15 (first day for most, if not all, med school admissions decisions). Hope that helps!

Just curious, is it normal to get phone for all accepted candidates or just early decision? Is it UKY is the only school who calls accepted candidates.. or is it norm?

How long after Admissions Committee Review Completed on the status page did you guys get interviews?

The admissions committee meets every other week on thursday, not friday.

As the guy above said he thanked his interviewer... that's a very classy move. I'll bet the med school keeps track of that sort of classy move (HINT).

UK 99% of the time calls if you get accepted (EDP or not), but they may not call that day. Most of these folks are practicing docs and have families and such. While it is a big deal to them, their lives take precedence, and sometimes they don't get to calling until 10PM that night.

They don't call to say you got rejected/wait listed... that would be cruel.

Call/Email Kim Scott or Carol Elam if you need a place to crash. Frankly, I'd rather stay in a hotel that crash on some strangers couch/bed. That's just me.😱

BTW, EDP folks interviewing on the first few days have VERY high chances.

Not true. By december, the class is usually full, and folks are just added as spots get opened up from people switching b/w schools.

Earlier is better at UK. Repeat that in your head until you believe it.

Also, somebody above said something about getting stuck in limbo b/w acceptance and denial... that is a good time to call and tell them how interested you are. Don't be a jerk about it, but just say you'd really like the opportunity b/c they are high on your list.

BTW, I'm an M4 here at UK if you all have any questions.

I was so excited to get an II here... to bad the only spots open were December -_- better than nothing, though!

Just got my II. I am OOS from Indiana and really love Kentucky. Would love the opportunity to go here. They only have January spots open now, so that is a downer. But at least it's still a shot.

Check the website daily. People do drop their interview spots.

I just scheduled an interview for late January, which I realize is a little late, but I was wondering if my interview date will significantly hinder my chances of admission?

Reason why I'm worried is that previous posters mentioned that "as long as you interview before December, you're good to go" and "the class is usually full by December". Do lots of seats open up after December?

It says on UK's website that the class is full by the end of December. If there are other dates available prior to January then I would definitely try to make one work.
Maybe call the admissions office.

I had a pretty strong application and interviewed last year in early December. Class was full and I got waitlisted and didn't get in b/c the waitlist barely moved. This year applied ED and got in. So yeah you should keep an eye on the list for earlier dates

If anyone is dropping their interview date, please let your fellow SDNers know on this thread!

I seriously love this school. I'm not interviewing here until early January so this is so disappointing. There is always my state school, but I really just want to go to UK haha.

Congrats on the acceptance 🙂

Tons are people are interviewing in Jan, Feb, and March... they can't all be just interviewing for waitlist spots with only little hopes of gaining admissions to UK. I really hope...

If I'm not mistaken, committee meets today for decisions on recent interviewees. Fingers crossed!

Anyone else interview regular decision and anxiously awaiting Oct. 15th? What does your status say if you already interviewed and you are regular decision?

Going to be the longest 11 days of my life.

Unfortunately that's how it is. You'll see that once the class gets full about 75% of those people waiting to interview will drop their spots. Either in favor of another acceptance or something else. I can tell you that I signed up as a first alternate on a day in November and then received an email about a week before that date from UK saying I should pick a new date b/c drops were unlikely. I picked a new date.. someone dropped 2 days later and the 2nd alternate got my interview spot. If there are no good dates left I suggest you find an early date and sign up as 1st alternate and hope for a drop. If nothing is available until 2013 then you're better off this way because those 2013 spots will open a lot once the class fills.

Would you mind elaborating on this point please? Do you mean that many class seats will open in early 2013 due to accepted applicants choosing to go elsewhere for medical school, so that a January interview would still give the applicant a good chance at admissions, given that he/she is a competent applicant.

And also, I'm getting loosely familiar with the alternate list concept, I'm guessing that we will need to contact the office of admissions for a position on a day that is already full, for the purpose of waiting for someone to drop their interview slot. Is it true that once an applicant is placed on an alternate list for a day, he/she is NOT able to also sign up for a later unfilled interview slot?

We really appreciate your help, rockjb.

I believe he was mostly referring to interview seats. So people who are going to interview in the spring may choose not to if they already got accepted to a different school. So if you can be on an earlier wait list for interview it may work out that you get to interview earlier than if you pick an open seat.

Have you gotten an II yet? When you do there will be a calendar to sign up for your interview. You can pick an open seat or you can pick wait list for a day that is full, hoping someone gives up their interview spot.

As far as the wait list for acceptance that is sometimes called on hold, or decision deferred. Basically schools know that people apply to multiple schools and their best candidates often get accepted to multiple schools. In the spring people start deciding which school they want to attend and as they notify the school people high on the alternative list will begin to get acceptance notices.

I am scheduled to interview Jan 8th. I know this is kind of specific and obviously I have to make the decision for myself. But with what you have said, would you recommend that I go on the wait list for a spot in early November maybe? I am just afraid that if I do that, I will then be stuck with an interview late January or maybe February, and end up screwing myself over more.

But If a January interview is making my chances so much lower, I don't really want to do that either. Ahh I don't know what to do! Either way, thanks for all of your insight.

That's really a tough call. My suggestion to get on for wait list was mostly to those who have signed up for a spot when the class will definitely be full. If the class isn't full by Jan 8th then you would probably be better off holding your spot. If the class is going to be full by that time anyway then you'll be competing for alternate spots and you'd be better off on the Interview waiting list hoping for the best. I can't remember EXACTLY when the class filled last year. Seems like it was late Dec or Early Jan so you're kind of on the fence. Maybe hold your spot and check the interview website maniacally to see if anyone has opened an early spot. Best of Luck

Sorry I was vague. What I meant was those interview spots in January/February which are full now won't be once the accepted class fills and the emails go out that anyone else is just interviewing for alternate list spots. People will drop their interviews and you can move from February to mid-January. If you sign up for a spot on a full interview day as an alternate interviewee then you CAN NOT sign up for another open interview spot until you relinquish your waiting spot. As for the actual alternate list: 2 years ago they let in a lot of people off the Alt list (30-40) last year they did very little (less than 10 I think) also when they say the class is "full" what they meant was "oversubscribed" they gave out more acceptances than they had seats knowing that some people would not take them in favor of another school. In either case if you make alt list you get ranked and they won't tell you your exact ranking and they won't necc take people from the ranks 1, 2, 3 so on. If a white female drops they'll try to replace with a white female ect.

Hope that was better

That was very helpful. Still not exactly sure what I will do, but thanks for all of the help!!

Oh, and I already check it like a maniac 🙂

That's a tough choice to make. I think that I would probably sign up on the waiting list for the 12th of November because there are only 12 spots and hope that they either let me interview or that someone switches days.

Although, I once heard some wise advise. The person said that most of the time you already know what to do and you are just hoping for someone to validate your opinion. So ask yourself what you really think is best and go with that, because we could easily argue both options with valid reasons.

Good luck to those interviewing this week!

I loved my interview day, the interviewers were very friendly and the tour with the med students was fun too.

That is a good piece of advice. I would like for someone to validate my plan to just call up admissions and demand a spot next year without an interview so we can save both of us some time 🙂 But no one suggested that yet, so maybe I will mull over my other options today and then decide what to do. Thanks for the advice!

LOL, that's a great idea, why didn't I think of that?

I wouldn't waitlist a spot. I did so originally - I tried to waitlist a spot for a September interview and ended up losing a spot I could have had for an October interview. Now interviewing on Nov 12. Kicking myself a little over that one. However, the Nov 12 date was an add-on, I seriously checked the calendar every single day, and I do agree that every now and then you find something open up that wasn't there before. I think if you get an interview in before the end of December, you shouldn't sweat it.

I would totally agree with you if that were the scenario, unfortunately these folks only have January and later spots available. :-/

Yep, mine is the first date in January. Just going to hold onto it for now, continue to check it obsessively (especially after the 15th of October), and hope.

Fingers crossed, people who get accepted here will also get several Ivy League acceptances with full rides, decline the UK acceptance, and give us lowly January interviewees a fighting chance.

I think the class will take a little longer to fill up this year because if my memory serves, they added 20 more seats for this years class (yay!). So at this point I think I'd avoid waitlisting a spot and just take the earliest available date. Hope this helps

Thanks, if that is true that is really great. Every little piece of hope helps 🙂

I'm wondering if being a wait list candidate for an interview would be affected by living only an hour away. Would it be presumptuous/out of line for example to let the admissions office know that in less than a day's notice I could be available to interview without reserving a wait list spot? I'm currently scheduled to interview February 5th so I feel pretty certain I need one of the wait list spots to even stand a chance. I think my application is really unique and I have a lot of cool experiences going for me but in terms of numbers, my MCAT is only a 28 and my GPA is only a 3.6. Not surprisingly, this is the only interview I have been offered but UK was my first choice school so I'm still pretty excited. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You're in a tough spot with the MCAT for sure, but from every indication Kentucky seems to more than just a numbers place. I do agree that interviewing early might be the best option for you, in this instance. I'd consider gambling on a wait list spot in your situation, unless you know you'll significantly alter your measurables in the next few months.

You can't hurt yourself by trying. Just give them a call. Who knows.

Is anyone who has interviewed getting anxious for Monday?

Has your status changed, or does it still say interview completed?

Interview completed, the anxiety is definitely building up!

Hi everyone! I'm a current M1 here at UKCOM and maybe I can answer some of your questions about the process, especially for those who are non-traditional applicants.
All the best with everything!!!

It's not typical for them to call on Monday unless they didn't get to calling everyone on Friday to the best of my knowledge. As for online status updates, I honestly never checked; I just called the office. I would say call Kim on Monday to ask her. That way you get to find out about your status and also show you're really interested in the school.
