I'm currently secondary complete, no interview invite, no rejection - expecting a rejection any day now.

Did anyone else in this position notice a change on the status page recently? The icon for "Interview - not scheduled yet" appears to have switched from an unlocked padlock to a locked padlock... Thoughts?

Does anyone know if a late interview here (march) means interviewing for the waitlist? Thanks!

Just a word of encouragement to other applicants--don't give up! :luck:

I am an in-state resident and was placed on "pre-interview hold" on Nov 15. I responded to the hold status with a short email, reiterating my interest in UMD (~2 sentences). I received an interview invite on Jan 11th (!!!) and scheduled my interview for early March (earliest date available). I was able to push my interview up a bit, to Feb 4th by emailing the admissions committee and asking to be considered for an earlier date in the event of cancellations. I received my acceptance letter (!!!) in the mail on Friday.

If I can go from pre-interview hold >>>> interview >>>>> acceptance, anything is possible!

For reference, stats: 30M (9-11-10), science GPA: 3.51, overall GPA: 3.67.

(This is my first SDN post, so please bear with me...)

Wow such major perseverance! Congratulations, you really earned this and you should be so proud!!!!

So I've been complete since October and have recieved no "pre-interview hold" or rejection status. Should I go ahead and file Maryland in my box of silent rejections?

I interviewed same day. Stats around yours. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst.

As for those with post-interview rejections, did you get snail mail or email rejections?

Hi everyone. I recently was accepted to several schools including Maryland, and I‘m trying to compare them. I'm a little concerned about going to Maryland because of the high crime rate in Baltimore and especially in that area and was wondering what people thought about this safety issue. When I toured at Maryland, the student tour guide said that if we wanted to be on campus at night we should only go out in a group. She also forewarned us that if we go to Maryland it's a good idea to backup your laptop regularly in case you get mugged, something that happened to her and two of her friends at different times. I thought this might be just be one person's story, so I asked a friend of mine who goes to the University of Maryland School of Nursing (which is next to the med school). She said that during her orientation she was warned not to wear any jewelry because it encouraged mugging. Her teacher said that if they insisted on wearing a necklace, they had to make sure it had a weak chain, so it wouldn't hurt as much when it gets ripped off her neck. Scary.

Nice stories. Trying to get people to withdraw? 🙄

In all seriousness though, something can happen to anyone walking around in almost most places these days. And many (most?) med school campuses are not in the "safest" areas. You just need to use common sense...no flashing a laptop in public, not walking around at night by yourself etc. And this goes for anywhere, especially if you're a girl.

I've been on a pre-interview hold for quite some time now. You guys think my chances of being offered an interview at this point are slim to none? Thanks!

Agreed lol! As a long-time Baltimore resident, I can tell you that JHU is actually in a *much* seedier part of town than UMD is (hence why they have security officers stationed at EVERY single corner). Like many major cities, Baltimore does have a high crime rate, BUT a little bit of common sense and vigilance goes a long way 🙂

Do you know if there is a correlation between how early you hear back and acceptance? It's been 5 weeks and people from my interview group are already getting acceptances.

Never mind. it looks like 130 people liked the page since yesterday lol

Yes, an email was sent to accepted students inviting us to our class FB page very soon after the question came up here. So it seems we are being watched 🙂

So I guess they are done sending out acceptances for the year? 🙁 I interviewed the week of February 4th and still no response.

Pretty sure that's not the case since they interview through March 31st. And last year it says they offered 330something acceptances of the people who interviewed.

I was positive today was gonna be the day I heard back. This snow must be interfering with my clairvoyant powers. Drat!

(Interviewed 2/6)

Interviewed 2/4. Still haven't heard anything. I wonder if they review IS first? I'm OOS.

Also, do they send rejections later than they send acceptances? Any one of you had to wait particularly long only to receive an acceptance? Do post-interview rejections come by snail mail too?

EDIT: Called the admissions office. They said if you get rejected or hold/WL you get emailed, if you get in, it's a package. Also they said not to listen to what Dr. Foxwell said - you are reviewed in the order that your interviewer submits their stuff/can vouch for you, and this is usually 6-8 weeks, he stressed. I made sure to word it as "I live really far from campus and letters typically take long to get to me from the East Coast, so I was just concerned about what would happen if the letter takes more than 3 weeks to get there (past the limit for them giving away your spot)..." so as not to sound like a neurotic premed (although this was actually a concern). He responded that they count from when you RECEIVE IT, not from when they send it.

Hope this was helpful!

EDIT2: now my heart skips a beat (and subsequently fills with dread) every time I get an email in my inbox. This is going to be a tough few weeks. I hope I get a package!!

EDIT3: boyfriend over my shoulder goes "that's what she said." Headdesk.

This was totally helpful! Not sure it was reassuring, because in addition to having palpitations every time I go to get the mail I now feel a rush of dread every time I check my email. But it was helpful none the less, so thank you!!

Got my acceptance package in the mail today!!! Interviewed 2/6! OOS

Is anyone pretty much set on attending? I might go apartment hunting in the next few weeks if anyone wants to join (either to join me in apartment hunting or just to look around campus)! I'm looking for 1-2 roommates, PM me if you might be down 🙂

I know this is slightly off topic BUT I just feel so exposed on the FB group D:

Got rejected for the MD/Master's program. My app was sent over to MD. I guess this means I don't have a chance for anything better than low-tier waitlist. Sigh.

I feel like they send post-interview rejection letters so rarely that they actually ended up sending me the pre-interview rejection letter. I had to call them and confirm with them that it was, in fact, a post-interview rejection.

Any medical students here know of anyone who was rejected for the dual degree program who was accepted to MD only?

I've looked through the last couple of UMD school threads, and I don't believe they have a second look.

Going to withdraw as an OOS accepted applicant. Hope it goes to one of you guys!

I was accepted! PM me if you would like to meetup or are considering roommates!

Congrats! Do you mind sharing your interview date or about how long ago it was?
It was a while ago. I am new to actually posting on the forums.

Interviewed: 11/12
Accepted: 12/04
In-state

Has anyone heard anything about merit scholarships? I know Maryland awards a few of these each year.

I was wondering how well kept the "dorms" are? or Is it better to just live off campus?

MS2 here, I've been lurking on this thread for a while and it seems you all never got a satisfactory answer to your question about safety. I hope it's not too late to provide you with a bit of info. Baltimore is like any big city in that there are dangerous areas and there are great areas that are really safe.

Like any medical center serving an inner-city population, UMD is adjacent to some sketchy looking areas. But that is the reality of practicing medicine in any big city. Personally, I've never felt unsafe. In fact, in the two years since I've started, they've made countless improvements in campus security and in the development of the neighborhood in general. When I toured UMD, Baltimore street consisted of bombed out row-houses and boarded up businesses. Now, it is lined with Panera, Pita Pit, and Nando's Peri Peri. Things are changing for the better. I go to Lexington Market and Trinacria many days for lunch and I've never felt unsafe. In fact, I think I witnessed more robberies occur during my undergrad in a hoity toity area of more southern city than I have in med school. I attribute this to the fact that most people who attend med school practice the "Be Smart" rule of living in a city- be aware of your surroundings, don't go looking for trouble by going into sketchy areas at bad times, don't have your face burried into your cell phone, and live in a place you feel safe. There are a variety of housing options around campus, some safer than others, and where you live will help determine the probability of getting mugged (if you're interested more in housing, PM me). These are all really common sense things, and for the most part you will be okay. Obviously, this isn't a guarantee you won't run into trouble, but that is a risk inherent to living in any big city.

A different way of looking at it is that it is a good thing to live in B-more. You'll see trauma, you'll get incredibly good at treating heroin addiction, you'll have medical experiences that you would never get at schools that are a little more gentile. We're a tertiary care center and an inner city hospital, which (to me at least), is the best place to train to be a good doctor.

Thanks for the info!

Would any current student be able to post this years match list? I don't believe they put it on the website. They gave out the previous 2 match lists at my interview, but I'm just curious where students ended up this year as well. Loved Maryland 🙂

Does anybody know when Financial Aid Packets are released for 1st year students?

seems like they only really give the federal loans though, maybe some small grant packages for in-state students

Does anyone know if the HP/P/LP/F grading system based on a curve system... or is there a cut off such as HP>95, P>85...?

The grading system is A/B/C/D. No curving. Not sure what the cutoffs are though.
