Quick question- does anyone know if there is a MetroRail stop very close to campus?

The MetroRail stop at Civic Center is right next to the med school campus (as well as Jackson, the VA, and UM Hospital - It's one giant facility). I am an undergrad who volunteers in a lab inside the med school main building (Rosensteil). It is about a 4 minute walk.

Students can buy a one month MetroRail pass for $50.

Driving into downtown from the south in the morning is an exercise in futility. I live about 19 miles south of the med campus by car and to be there by 9 would mean I would have to leave around 7 (NO LATER than 7:30). Now I drive to a park and ride lot, get on a bus that takes me (via a dedicated busway) to furthest south MetroRail stop and then ride to campus. This way takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Thank you for this information. I'd like to clarify a couple of things, though...

1) most students live within 5-10 miles of the campus. People who live with their parents or who have big houses for their family tend to live farther, ie: 19 miles away.

2) If you live within 5 miles of campus the traffic is fine in general.

3) I live 4 exits south (3/4 mile from Brickell) and it takes me about 7-15 minutes door to door in the AM depending on time. It takes me about the same to get home at nearly any given time of day. I drive.

4) I have lived in North Beach, Coconut Grove, the Roads and Midtown over the past 6 years and am happy to answer questions about commuting on here.

Yay. Just got the call from my interviewer: accepted! 🙂

interviewed 2/18 and received a call today that I was accepted! I can't believe it... I even googled the area code to make sure it came from Miami and wasn't a fraud. best of luck, everyone!

Just got the voicemail. Will call back tomorrow. Can see II on MDAPPS.

Long time lurker, first time poster... This site stressed the crap out of me throughout the application process, but I think that made my acceptance so much sweeter.

Complete late December. Interviewed 2/11. Accepted 2/27.

Crazy excited to be part of the Miller class of 2017!!! 😀 😀 😀

I also interviewed that day! Where we're you from?! Or is that what private messages are for... Newb here

Ps also a first time poster apart from the short one I sent yesterday

My name is Peter. I'm from Orlando and did my undergrad up at Vassar. I was wearing a charcoal grey suit and have a pretty distinctive beard. The presenter from the financial aid office singled me out and said I looked like Ben Affleck in the movie Argo. Can't really get much more specific than that.

Does anyone know around what time they send out the alternate list emails? I interviewed on 2/1 and still haven't heard anything :scared:

Waitlisted for both MD and MD/MPH, interviewed 2/18 and 2/19. This may have been asked before but does Miami keep a ranked waitlist? Also can anyone comment on the number of students who come off the waitlist?

Hi there. I do know that Miller maintains a ranked wait list, but cannot speak to the frequency of its movement. That is something I wish I knew.

Hi current students!

So I was recently accepted into both the MD and MD/MPH programs. My gut instinct is to go with the MD/MPH, but I'm afraid that cramming two degrees into 4 years would be too overwhelming. I mean, med school is hard enough, and taking on an extra MPH class/ planning for a capstone project means less time for extracurriculars/research/life. However, I definitely do want to get an MPH as some point in my career, perhaps residency or as a physician (when a hospital I work at may pay for it.) On the other hand, it would probably be rough to try to do an MPH later in life (as busy as being a med student is, one can only imagine the business that residency and actually being a physician entails.)

So what are the thoughts, current students? I love the idea of doing both degrees in 4 years, but I don't want to fail out of med school because of it! At the interview it seemed that the MD/MPH students love their track, yet it seemed like the MD students strongly advised against doing the MD/MPH, because they love the flexibility of the lectures (the fact that they can watch the lectures at home on their own time.)

Oh, and I also think I'd really fit in well with the MD/MPH PBL curriculum.

Wouldn't you be able to take a year off between 2nd and 3rd year to complete your MPH? I know this is how they do it at many other schools and I think I heard something similar to this on interview day at UM. I would look into this, as you would get the MPH, but still have the flexibility of the MD only program schedule. But on the other hand, you will graduate with a different class...it's all about what is most important to you.

Not a current student but I've been accepted to both programs, chose MD/MPH, and I'm curious to hear the replies to this. About the lectures, the MD/MPH curriculum from what I gathered is still largely lecture based with 3 PBL sessions per week. About recordings, this is a direct quote from their yearly student handbook:

"Although small group meetings are mandatory,
all other lectures are recorded and accessible
online! Note that you also have access to all
recorded lectures from the MD program too!"

So the MD/MPH can choose to go to lecture or review at home just like the MD only students.

That is also a good point, if I choose the MD track, I still have the option of doing a traditional 5 year MD/MPH degree at Miami. However, the traditional 5 yr MD/MPH degree isn't integrated into the MD curriculum like the 4 yr MD/MPH (not sure if the integrated thing is actually a good thing or just something they say that sounds good). Also I wouldn't get the PBL with the traditional 5 yr MD/MPH. Would still be a little bit worried with things being overwhelming with the 5 yr MD/MPH program, but perhaps less so? But that's true I should really be comparing the traditional 4 yr MD/MPH against the 5 yr MD/MPH when I'm thinking about this decision. Thanks for that perspective!

thanks! I actually don't care too much about the fact that the MD-only's have a little bit more flexibility because they have less mandatory class-time, since I like PBL so much, I just mentioned that point because that was the thing I kept hearing over and over from the MD-only's on my interview day as to why they preferred the MD over the MD/MPH curriculum. congrats on your acceptance!

Btw, where did you find their student handbook?

Wow, after all of my interviews and conversations with med students, I view SDN much differently now. It is a huge source of misinformation, though it would be much better if more medical students came on to set things straight. Thanks to those that do! I interviewed 3/1 and stayed with MD/MPH students for three nights. They were so nice, they just let me stay and urged me to hang out with them all weekend. Thats right, since Thursday till just now, we all just hung out. The 4 year MD/MPH students have a (surprisingly) much lighter courseload it seems. For example, MD students had their first 6 weeks as anatomy, and called it the equivalent of academic hazing. Anatomy for the MD/MPH students is not in a block, but is spread throughout the entire first year. I met 30 of the 47 MD/MPH first years, and they all say that they have much more free time than the MD only students. However, this may change after first year, who knows. The MD/MPH students in the four year program do start earlier (June) and lose summers for the most part, and also have to do 3rd year at the West Palm location an hour and a half away from UM. Both MD and MD/MPH students love Miller, love Jackson, and have gotten so much hands on experience already. Jackson is truly awesome, and students told me that their third time shadowing, an attending let them MAKE AN INCISION during a surgery, completely guided of course, but still awesome and rare. I stayed in Brickell, but also checked out the apartments of a bunch of different students in several buildings. The apartments are gorgeous, and average montly rent was around 900-1000. Since the tuition is lower than most other private schools, it kind of balances out, but the apartments are amazing. Staying there for the whole weekend gave me such a different perspective than i got from just the interview, but the school really seems awesome. AND evidently about 100 people get pulled off the waitlist between May and June. That is from the lips of Dean Weisman himself. The poster above was totally right about flexibility for MD only students though. MD/MPH lectures start at 8 am and are mostly mandatory, while MD lectures are at 9 and are all recorded and optional, with some exceptions. Thats a big reason Im going MD only, even though my interviewer tried to sell me on the dual program.

Hi all, has anyone who has been recently accepted been added to the Fbook page? Or can we just add ourselves if we find it?

You have to add either one of the admins as friends and then they add you to the group. They'll send you an email eventually to add them as a friend.

does the ad com meet every week or every other week?

Is it normal for them to take 4+ months to make a decision? I interviewed early November and haven't heard anything from MD! 😕

You should give them a call. I interviewed Feb 18th and they said some of us would hear on Feb 27th, others on the following week, and if we did not hear anything after 2 weeks, we should give them a call. Therefore, I assume you should give them a call.

If we haven't heard anything after two weeks, should we just assume waitlist?

They meet every other week. Dean Weisman said give them three weeks, and if you don't hear back, then call. Why would you assume waitlist?

Oh yes, they said 3 weeks, not 2. Sorry! 🙂

Any medical students or premeds willing to accommodate a first year medical student visiting University of Miami for a couple days? I'm willing to pay for your troubles. Thanks in advance!

Do MD/MPH students take the same classes as the MD for the first two years. I've heard conflicting things. How is the MD/MPH graded during years 1/2. I know the regular program records your percentage, quartile, etc. Seems competitve. Is the MD/MPH program different, since its PBL focused (assuming their classes are seperate from MD students). True P/F perhaps? What about research opporunities for MD/MPH students at Jaskson, Bascom-Palmer, etc during first two years. Are they equal to MD students?

Thanks!

of course.

Random question.

So I was accepted back in October with a scholarship but remember Dr. Weisman saying that if you hold multiple acceptances that UM might offer a bigger scholarship to convince you to go there. Does anyone know if this might be true? I'm holding a few acceptances at this point and recently decided to go to UM for sure. Part of me wants to free up the space for other students at other schools but I also can't forget what he said at the interview.

II yesterday. This school was a reach for me and I'm kind of in shock. Am I pretty much interviewing for a waitlist spot at this point?

Anybody have any word?

is everyone just waiting for a spot on the waitlist now? Or are they still offering acceptances?

is today a decision day? has anyone who interviewed on 2/22 heard back?

Can any current medical students comment on living with med student vs. living with non-med students? Or does everyone live with med students.
