Congrat!! I assumed you are IS? Non-Traditional? MCAT <=30 and off the chart in other catergories? My apology in advance if my assumptions are off.

man its hard not to feel left out of the party.... still waiting.... CONGRATS btw

Hey guys, me again. Just to clarify, Cr. Chan will be extending all acceptances via phone call this year. This decision was made at our summative meeting following the med student interview tours. Dr. Chan really has all of your best interests in mind and wanted our opinions as to the best way to receive an acceptance. The first year students in attendance concurred that receiving a phone call with other personal information as to WHY we were being accepted would be the best! It really says a lot about the program here that the dean of admissions met with us first year students and actually made significant changes to the admissions process based on our input!

Also, it's really none of my business... but the idea that the admissions committee "leaves you hanging" just for kicks is unfair. I have to say, one year ago I didn't know what to think about the excruciatingly long application process that it the UUSOM; however, it is extremely evident in my class that countless hours of careful consideration went into who would make up this class. If I could say one thing to the UUSOM's benefit, it would be that the dynamic here is one of camaraderie and mutual respect. We are all very different people, but we compliment one another very well. That said, I have NO idea why my application was not thrown into the trash one year ago. The fact is that not everyone can get into the program on their first or second try.

Sorry for the soap-box, but I just want all of you to know that this school is rad. Period. Keep your phones on!!

Thanks for the taking the time to share this info. Is Dr Chan planning on making all the acceptance calls before sending out the acceptance letters? Rumor has it that the mass acceptance letters will be sent this Friday the 22nd.

Congrats! See you in the fall!

All this waiting is driving me crazy, so I've found some interesting distractions that I'll share with you. I imagine these topics would be interesting to a lot of premeds, so please excuse me if I go off topic for a minute. I just ordered two books (and if anyone else wants to read along, or wants to read my copies after they arrive, they are more than welcome).

"Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves". This talks about a lot of fascinating applications of new biotechnology, ranging from pharmaceutical developments to using cloning to bring back extinct species. It was mentioned in a recent Ted talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/stewart_brand_the_dawn_of_de_extinction_are_you_ready.html

"Epigenetics Revolution: How Modern Biology Is Rewriting Our Understanding of Genetics, Disease and Inheritance". For those of you who are unfamiliar with epigenetics, it's the study of changes in gene expression (phenotype) due to external stimuli, and it may have a large effect on personalized medicine and disease in the upcoming years.

Again, anyone wanting to read my copies, just send me a message and once they arrive and I have read them, I'm happy to pass them along.

Sooo jealous! Every time my phone rings, I get a surge of excitement that is quickly replaced with sadness and lost hope 👎. Haven't been so eager about a phone call my entire life!!

Congrats though!

Congrats, congrats! When did you interview? Has anyone later in the cycle been accepted yet? I interviewed in February and wondering if early acceptances have gone out to anyone in those groups?

Gomer, your picture is so cute that they ought to let you in based on your looks alone.

Congrats to all those accepted! What a relief 🙂

This whole process is freaking me out! Does anyone know if the calls are being made in alphabetical order? Or, order of awesome application maybe? How long have your acceptance phone calls been? It is pretty cool that Dr. Chan is willing to spend that much time making all of those phone calls and then to tell them why they are chosen.

Got an acceptance call this afternoon around 2:50pm....super excited...I am an IS...just like everyone else, Dr. Chan made the call and congratulated me. He also talked about why they choose me and little bit about my interview. I have to say this is one of the best things ever happen to my life. So be patient and the call is on its way. Good luck to everyone🙂

Congrats!! When did you interview? Thanks for the info!

Looks like Dr. Chan has called many students already. The window is closing in on the rest of us...congrats to all that got accepted.

...It's going to be a mass rejection on Friday the 22nd. It is better if you apply out of state for MD/DO schools as your chances are greater.

How do you know? Sounds like you're just panicking

Says who? I applied last year and did all the same things you all did as well =/. Trust me, predicting rejection is like second nature.

I interviewed Feb...not long ago and I was lucky to not wait too long...but it seems like it is when your application is brought to the table and as soon as the admissions reviewed your application they will make the final decision right after. This process just takes time...definitely be patient because it is coming around the corner.

just curious what number came up? The U of U admissions office or was the # blocked?

Not to detract from the previous comment, but I'm also curious to know if anybody from BYU has heard anything.

Hahh...U of U is biased to SUU students because they are better prepared. I heard this from one official up at the U of U.

I forgot to mention this in my last post, but when I called the admissions office, I was also told that the 20 extra seats aren't official until the governor signs the bill. She said that the bill will be signed (or go until the end of the waiting period, when the bill automatically becomes law), but that those seats cannot officially be added until then. I suppose mass rejections could be coming at the end of this week, but from what I understood, they will be waiting on those extra 20 acceptances until it is official. This at least gives me hope that even with the acceptances that have already been extended, there are still at least those 20 spots!

It is the school of medicine admissions number 801-581-xxxx...I actually missed the call and I called back later. I felt that the admissions really spent a lot of time studying the students they want to admit.

Thanks! Ive gotten a few blocked calls that I didn't answer and was afraid i missed my call 🙂

Sincere congrats to all accepted! Sure hope I hear good news as you have. It's been a long wait since early September and there's finally an end in sight! To all who haven't heard anything yet, like myself, best of luck over the next couple of days and weeks (hopefully it doesn't go much longer than that).

So any guesses on how many seats have been offered at this point? Is tomorrow likely the last day to get accepted before the wait list?

Assume half or more. The stats that are given out may or may not be true. Take it with a grain of salt.

Also, if they think they are doing the applicants a favor by making these personal phone calls, they are out of their minds. Don't they realize people are on this forum? All this has done is increase my anxiety tenfold. I just want to know, regardless of the outcome.

Ha, no offense but the admissions office IS doing applicants a favor by offering personal phone calls, just not those still waiting. It's such a personal introduction to the next four years at the U and much better than a standardized email. I can understand the anxiety, but try to think how awesome it will be when you so get that call! (Much easier said than done I know)

Why not send out mass letters, and THEN make the personal phone calls? This isn't Christmas and we aren't 5 years old. Of course I appreciate the personal touch, but it doesn't have to be paired with the notification.

No word from OOS applicant decisions? Any lurkers holler please! I'm OOS and awaiting a response.

Agreed. 👍

I completely agree. Plus it takes one day to send out 100+ letters, but it will take a week or two to make 100+ personal phone calls. Then those people offered acceptances need time to make a decision to accept or not. Because these phone calls are happening, we know the admissions office has made its decisions. They know who is on the list and who isn't, and we've already had to wait insanely long. Why are they dragging this out? Maybe I'll change my mind if I get a personalized phone call, but right now cutting the anxiety and wait time is more important to me than talking to Dr. Chan on the phone. He can tell me later why I was good enough. They could at least send out the rejection letters. I don't know about anyone else, but I really need to start making a contingency plan ASAP if I don't get in.

The anticipation REALLY is terrible (especially for those like me who haven't received another acceptance yet despite having a great application), but to be fair, this year has been full of special circumstances for the admissions office. They have had to deal with the new legislation, uncertainty in admissions numbers, and making phone calls. It would be nice to know right away or to at least be given a time frame, but I think we need to cut the admissions office a little slack. I think future students will really appreciate receiving phone calls once the bugs have been worked out, and it says a lot about the school that the Dean of Admissions would take the time to personally call you.

It is still no excuse. 👎 This process happens every year and they need to start changing how they deal with their admissions process.

belief, I'm also OOS and have not heard any news. The wait period is almost at a close everyone, hang in there and let's stay positive as hard as this wait is!

I think it's about time for calls to start again...

Call, Dr. Chan, call!

I see your point. I think we can all agree there have been times when we thought the admissions process was specifically constructed to torture us as applicants. Let's just assume that maybe we don't know the entire process step for step and try to relax.

If we aren't "five year olds on Christmas" then we should be able to exhibit some patience. Once again, easier said than done I know.

My thoughts exactly. Whining about the wait is only going to make it longer. Find something else to do. I hear there's a lot of really solid basketball on TV right now...

Yea, some people are focused on the wrong kind of March Madness...

The waiting is no picnic, but medical school will only get harder. It's all just part of the sacrifice you make to be a doctor and help others. I would love for it to be easier, but it is what it is. At least we should all know within a week and a half!

Here is a question to counter what you said...If you apply to any school outside of the state of Utah, DO or MD, GENERALLY how long does it take to receive a response from the admissions committee?

That's not really a fair approach, though, as those schools didn't have to wait for legislation to pass before they could act. I believe this is the third year they have been trying to get the extra funding, so I imagine that everyone will hear back sooner in future years. That's not much a consolation prize for those of us who are waiting, but I think it's understandable.

Midwestern took 3 days to accept me. 3 days...

Speaking of matriculation, has anyone heard of anybody getting a phone call today from Dr. Chan?

I said that the approach (ie, the question) isn't fair as the U had special circumstances delaying their decision process. Of course, I've spent the last 3 days staring at my phone, so maybe I'll get lucky and have a 3rd day acceptance too, so to speak. =)
