I understand your negativity in this situation, but it's uncalled for to blame the school. Did you not understand that they ARE in fact changing the admissions process this year? You said you applied last year so you should know well that they didn't offer phone calls last year.

The phone calls are much better than the way they have done it in the past and better than how many other schools do it. I would dare say my anticipation was greater than many of yours' in that last year, with the "mass letter mailing," their system was programmed to send out background check emails to those accepted three days after the letters were in the mail. This meant that many people received this email BEFORE their letter, and with this forum tracking acceptance patterns, that is how I found out I was in. A crappy, non-descript background check email! Now, tell me that is better than a personal phone call... They are continually improving everything that goes on at this school and the evidence is there with the new phone calls 🙂

No, vouching for legislation is not a delay in the admissions process. They can still accept up to 82 students with/without the funding.

Email beats phone calls as they come up unexpectedly...you have to look to a phone daily for a phone call. it only increases the false anticipation.

Lol. There is a lot of weird quoting going on right now. Has anyone else noticed that the quotes are all being credited to the wrong people?

Well put, and as always, thank you for your insights. It's always nice to have some information from someone at the school. The anticipation is tough, but it will be well worth the wait (hopefully). Personally, I find that a positive outlook helps and will probably improve the entire medical school experience.

P.S. If you see Dr. Chan, please put in a good word for me. 😉
 
Update: The medical school funding bill has had a status change. The new status is Senate/ enrolled bill to Printing. I'm not sure what this means, but I bet it's a preliminary step to getting it signed by the governor.

Tell your friend congrats! That has to be a relief and very exciting! I agree with some of the comments that everyone just needs to remain positive. It's hard waiting, but it is what it is. The better the attitude the better the experience!
 
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know whether any students from Idaho have been accepted? If so, how many?

Not to be rude, but how is that encouraging? That's one spot less that is available to the rest of us, and since that means phone calls were made today, possibly another 5-15 spots that are out of the bucket. Yikes!! Needless to say, I am happy for everybody getting accepted since they obviously deserve it!

Gomer has a point...it is pure jubilance for the person that obtained the phone call, but pessimism for us who don't get one. That is why like I reiterated before, it is better if your chances are out of state rather than in state =/

I considered it encouraging because it meant they are still making phone calls, so we are all in the running. I will be concerned when the phone calls stop.

I agree, it's only human nature to feel a sense of jealousness for those who have been accepted while we're waiting for our own acceptance that may or may not come. They have what we want and their acceptance means one less slot that we could receive. I wish it wasn't this way, but it is.
 
I'm not complaining, but it would be nice to know a deadline for when all acceptances will be given out. Does anyone have a rough estimate of the # of people accepted so far?

The U did not HAVE TO wait for the legislature for them to decide if 200 people of the 500 they interviewed were nowhere close to being offered spots. Wayne State and VCU do quasi-rolling acceptances that don't necessarily penalize late applicants. If the U adopted that model, there would be less worry for those of us in the applicant pool. Even waitlisting or small-pooling a group of 200-300 people would be preferrable to leaving EVERYONE in limbo.

I am beginning to think the comment about not wanting to accidently reject a relative of a legislator/gov official is true.:naughty:

From what i've been able to see its about 5 people a day and they've been doing it for about two weeks by my estimate.

I bet there is not a set deadline right now due to the 20 new seats that have been added. It is my understanding that the governor still needs to sign the bill in order for it to take affect. However, I would guess in the next week and a half.

I got accepted by another school 3 weeks after my interview. (It was great--I cancel/turned down the other interview invites I got as this school trumped them IMHO....still waiting on the U.) While I didn't get a personalized phone call, they did send a link to a video of the deans and president of the school each giving a 20-second "congrats, I hope to see you next summer" welcome. I've also received lots of emails from the "welcome committee" and have been added to the class of 2017 Facebook page.

It seems like most schools inform you of Reject/Accept/Waitlist within 4-8 weeks of an interview.
 
Man, all these pessimistic people makes me less excited for the neuroticism of medical students. I understand the frustration of waiting, but complaining about the admissions process won't help your chances. Not-to-mention, some of you have been accepted elsewhere already. Be less premed-y k thx bye.

I have not heard of any Idaho applicants who have received a decision. I know that at least four of this year's applicants have not heard (myself and three friends who also applied to the U). I'm anticipating that I won't know for sure about the decision until the end of next week, at the earliest.

Haha. That's kind of funny with the premed-y comment. This board wasn't so pessimistic as of a day or two ago. I'm not sure what happened.

That's what I was thinking. A lot of decisions will be made notified by next Fri would be my guess. As a side note, do admissions offices/committees come on to SDN just to see what people are saying about the school? Just kind of curious.

I don't know about the U, but I interviewed at Ohio State (wait listed) and had a chance to sit around and talk with some of the administrators between interviews, and they confessed to occasionally reading comments on SDN.

I 100% agree with this comment. Complaining about the admissions process will not change the process. I agree this is a stressful waiting time to hear our fate; however, if I am accepted or not I will still respect the UUSOM.

Agreed. It's a fantastic school with an incredible faculty, and it will continue to be my top choice. Having a positive attitude is the way to go as it makes the wait a little more pleasant, and those are the kind of people with whom I hope to attend.
 
I wonder if the U's selection process will weed out some of the more pessimistic people on here. I do understand the pain of waiting but there is nothing that can be done. And we all know that those who are complaining will adopt the UUSOM as their new best friend if they get in.

...Neurociticism of medical students? 0.o Someone has been watching too much House. We complain because we can about waiting and waiting. For some it only has been a few months and for others a long friggin while...too long. While there is jubilee in someone getting accepted, most of.us waiting/ponderers of rejection letters say "why can't it be me?....why?"
we complain as a way to vent frustration of the current situation. Trust me....there have been others that have danced the tango with the u of u before. All I am saying is that utah needs more opportunities for premeds to stay in Utah..another school maybe. A class size, while it may be a good thing does not necessarily mean happiness for all as an increase in size.means.more.competition. :scared: and all that does is create.more frustration for all applicants.
 
The fact that if you get accepted you'll like the U doesn't make what they're doing right. Sure we all would like to get in, and are impressed by the school, but that doesn't mean we can't criticize their admissions process. Personally, I think after all the interviews are done, there's no reason to wait any longer to accept about 85% of the class (keeping in mind the extra seats that they would have been unsure about per the bill). Whatever, it's not worth fighting over it haha, there're only 10 more days left until we all find out I guess!

And why not? This forum gives (mostly) annonymous feedback on how things are done. It is a great place to get people's honest opinion about any school or program--which is something that can be hard to get.

I highly doubt that they have the time or inclination to try to figure out which avatar belongs to which applicant. If they did do that....:laugh:
 
Hi everyone. I just wanted to share some information that I got this afternoon. I happened to be at the U hospital and I decided to stop by the admissions office and asked the lady there some of the questions that are being posed on SDN. She was very nice and said that they are gearing up to send out 102 invitations for acceptances but that it is going to take TWO WEEKS to go through everything. She specifically told me that the admissions committee is still meetins and evaluating applicants for the next two weeks. I post this to hopefully answer the idea that tomorrow (Friday the 22nd) is the "dooms day" as some people have previously thought. She also made it sound like SB42 will be fully passed within that time frame. Though I wasn't able to get a direct answer if they will offers those seats before the Governor signs it into law. I wish everyone the best of luck (of course after I get accepted first😉 )!!

Yes, they do. They also get alerts whenever they are mentioned on blogs or Facebook, etc. So, be careful if you decide to post anything negative about them.
 
Thanks everyone for the answers to our questions! I'm excited to see what happens over the next couple of weeks and hope to get that phone call from Dr. Chan. Good luck everyone.
 
Well i did a little research, and it looks like even if the bill is not signed, unless it is vetoed it will go in affect i think the 3 or 4th of April. So I guess it could take up till a day or 2 after that for everyone to find out....
 
It's 10:30 pm and I'm afraid to go to bed just in case Dr. Chan decides to call haha. Heaven help me.
