It's super important. I think it even makes a difference as an in-state applicant.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I'm currently doing research in trauma and we definitely work with underserved patients, but the research is focused more on medical problems. I'm interested in rehabilitation and trauma. I grew up in a rural area so I also have experience in that regard. I'll try not to hijack your thread though. 🙂 Thanks again for the advice and congrats on your acceptance!

Well, folks, this has been an extremely difficult decision, but I'm withdrawing. I'm glad that one more Alaska WWAMI applicant will get the chance to go to UW this year, though. Good luck to everybody!

Best of luck to you Sir! Where did you decide on going instead?

Hi guys! I'd like to ask for your opinion on something (maybe it will help distract us from all of this waitlist watching).

In addition to my position on the UW waitlist (21, so I'm cautiously optimistic), and admission to one U.S. school that I can't possibly pay for, I've also been admitted with advanced standing to medical school in Switzerland. The main advantage to going in Zurich would be that tuition is negligible compared to US schools--something like $1500/year. My husband (he is Swiss) also has a good job here, and you are paid for your work during clinical years, meaning that I would not only avoid debt from medical school, but could probably pay off my undergrad debt soon as well.

School here technically takes 5 years--but I added it up, and that includes about 21 months of vacation (4 in summers, 1 month in the winter, plus Christmas and Easter breaks). That would give me at least some time to do rotations in the U.S. and visit friends and family back home.

The disadvantages, of course, include being away from home for so long (home is the Seattle area). The students will also be quite a bit younger than I am, as they begin directly after high school, and school will be mostly in German (which I speak, so that isn't that bad). The main thing, though, is that apparently it will be getting much harder in the coming years for grads from abroad to land residencies, as the number of medical school spots is increasing, but residency spots are not.

Anyway, I'm interested in your opinion(s) on whether it would be worth risking a harder time finding residency in order to avoid the kind of debt that most med students graduate with? Especially as I will probably decide to go into primary care, not having debt after residency would give me a lot of freedom to choose a job for the work, as opposed to worrying too much about money.
Thanks for any advice.

Interesting question, but may I suggest posting this again in a separate, new thread under the general "pre-med allopathic" page? I dont think you're going to find too many people here who can answer this question. Plus it broaches a very broad topic and this is a school-specific thread. I'd love to hear what others think though. Personally, I think if your ultimate goal is to practice in the US - attend a US MD program. The cost savings don't outweigh the potential risk of being limited to the scrap leftover residency spots that other US allopathic graduates didn't want.

number 1 alaska WWAMI alternate accepted!!!! there is hope guys, i promise...

Hi guys! To the other recently accepted alternates, how long is it taking to get your uw ID/account?

Thanks!

I got mine today but that's because I went by the Student Affairs office in person to see if they had it yet (I was in the building anyway to meet with Financial Aid). I was #9, so not that far before you but I'm not sure how much longer it would have taken them to get it to me by mail.

I wouldn't worry about it too much as you have quite a while before you need to be done with your compliance requirements. I'm in TRUST so I've been chasing up on this pretty actively as I have to have everything done within the next month.

Oh good! Hopefully I will get mine soon.

I have not received any of that information yet, I'm thinking about calling if I don't get anything by the end of the week.

I just emailed to make sure my acceptance won't go away because of a failure to "continue my caliber of work to date"....because I applied with straight A's in my prereqs and I got a few B's this year. I'm laughing at myself for emailing about it, but you can never be too sure when you're withdrawing from everywhere else.

In other news, I switched my acceptance to firm today!

Congrats! So are you for sure going to matriculate?

Feeling pretty sure! I am still waffling on withdrawing the one other pending application I have left. I think it's ridiculous that OHSU STILL hasn't given me an accept/reject/waitlist decision. They are jerking everyone around for at least another week and it makes me feel unimpressed. I'm gonna get up the nerve to withdraw soon.

It had been stalled for over a week, I was starting to get concerned

I was worrying too, and now I'm freaking out because I'm three spots away and probably have to decide REALLY soon what continent to live on for the next 4-8 years....😱

If in the future you want to practice medicine in the United States I think the decision is hands down to go to a US medical school. Residency slots for international students will be few-and-far-between with increased medical school enrollment and a static number of residency slots (more or less) oh and it's a gift to be accepted to UW don't waste it 🙂

I've heard this advice before when it comes to going overseas for medical school. I have a friend who's going to medical school in Serbia, and he eventually wants to come back. What if you did your residency abroad, would it be tough to come back and practice in the states after that?

No. You have to re train in a united states residency EVEN IF you complete your residency in another country. There are international docs who have completely gone through residency twice, including their intern year after being certified in their country. The competition is very high for international residency program applicants already. I would absolutely matriculate to UW instead of going international

Woah that sounds like a major pain

Hey guys! I just got an acceptance e-mail. I was number 21!

Congrats! So are you accepting your spot or doing your training elsewhere?

I am still deciding--I'll give myself ~2 weeks to make my final decision--but I'm leaning hard toward UW. I'm watching their promotional video right now, and it's working 🙂.

Thinking about applying for MD-PhD program in the fall, as well, if my husband is happy enough in Seattle.

Things look good for whack get out!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using SDN Mobile

Now's the time the list will begin to move a lot. Just wait and hopefully your number will come up.

Congrats on the acceptance, swissm. See you in the fall.

Hopefully they can get to number 40!

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist! I think I'm gonna take a break from SDN. Catch y'all on the FB group, and in person come August!!

It moved on Friday. It's moved a little herky-jerky this cycle. Hopefully at some point this week it will jump a bunch of spots.

Just got a UW email. Happiest one or two seconds of my life, until I realized it was asking for alumni donations.

WA resident just withdrew here.

Hope the spot goes to one of you folks!
