Ok! What were ur stats? 🙂

I am going to sort of dodge the stat question.
I have a 3X MCAT and a cGPA >3.5.

But, if you look closely at UW, they are interested in OOR applications that emphasize a commitment to the underserved. They are also fans of URM applicants. More about those two than the numbers.

Haha yea I saw that as well. As someone who is more interested in research and not URM, I just wanted to see if a fellow OOS had overcome that with high stats 😛

FYI, since I had these questions:
It took them about 6 days to process my mailed check after its arrival in their mailbox (so I guess 4 business days)

Also, for those of you sending in residency questionnaires, it took the residency office about 6 business days (8 days) after receipt of my residency packet to confirm my residency and complete my application. I sent the package via next-day mail, so I know when they got it.

Any OOR applicants receive an actual interview date yet?

It's been a month and a half since I've heard anything and I'm wondering if this is common for UW. I know the email said OOR applicants are interviewed some time around Dec-Jan, but just want to be sure I haven't missed anything.

Kind of funny that I asked this question just a few days ago since I received my actual interview date (November) tonight! Now it just seems so much more real :scared:😀🙂!

Just received the follow up invite email with a date for later in October. In-state.

Awesome! I had seen that before but I wasn't sure if there were multiple groups of applicants. I haven't been to an interview with such few people which is why I thought there might be more. I interview at 2. When do you interview?

I think you're right, there must be more than one group, because I am also interviewing at 2pm on October 9th (unless I misread and you're interviewing on another date).

You did not misread it. Copied straight from the email they sent me: Tuesday, October 09, 2012 at 2:00:00 PM.

First II, so excited! 😀 In-state applicant complete 9/12. Good luck everyone

I'm OOS and OOR and no secondary yet . . . waiting, waiting, waiting. No news is not necessarily bad news??? At least a rejection hasn't been aimed my way as of yet . . . .

Me too... I got the initial letter on 9/7. How long have you been waiting?

Gaaaah!!! Waiting for an II is killing me! Complete 9/4. OOR. 29 MCAT 3.5 GPA. Awesome ECs and seeking primary care. Actually living in the Seattle area now - sent an update letter a couple of weeks ago. I'm dying here! When were you OORs with IIs complete?!

Actually I just realized that the email said that OORs don't *hear* from them regarding IIs until December or January :scared: not (as I previously misread) *get* interviews until then. I guess I won't be holding my breath!

Does anyone know how many OOS people they interview on average per cycle?

Does anyone know how many OOS people they interview on average per cycle?

OOR applicants: ~3500
OOR interviews: ~160

My MSAR is kind of archaic (from a late 2000s cycle), but I think these stats should be still very similar to other years. So yeah, pretty tough odds, but if you haven't gotten a rejection or (especially if) you've been given a secondary, that's a good thing, at least. I know I wouldn't get an interview if I were OOR, so congrats on making it this far! :luck:

The current MSAR information is confusing. This is what it says:

OOS Applications: 4169
OOS Interviews: 79
OOS Matriculants (including MD/PhD): 98

(11 MD/PhD, 2 deferred)

WWAMI residents considered in-state.

I assume that's a 179?

That is probably not a typo. UW accepts very few out of state students. They are part of WWAMI http://www.uwmedicine.org/education/wwami/pages/default.aspx

From what I have heard ( from advisors at the school ), this really limits which oos's they can accept. I know of a few California residents who were not MSTP who got in (last year), but for the most part this is rare and generally reserved for non-traditional applicants.

Oh no I definitely believe you! But since 79 makes no sense, I figure that it was a typo and they meant 179, or maybe 279. I guess what I mean is that I can't imagine that they interviewed 790 to fill up only 5-10% (what they say is OOR, IIRC) of their class.

Thanks all. I do know all about WWAMI and have even been advised by folks I know at UW SOM that as an OOR applicant (and non-URM) it is very unlikely that I'll gain acceptance.

I think the issue is the probable typo in the MSAR that says that they interview 79 and accept 98. I think Neuro is probably right--it could be 179.

We could continue to parse numbers...or just cross our fingers and wait 🙂

I actually believe the 79 interviewed from the MSAR is correct.

If you look on their website under Admissions Frequently Asked Questions and scroll down to "The Interview" section. Number 17 clearly states,

"What percentage of applicants gets interviewed? What percentage of people that gets interviews is accepted?
Within the WWAMI region, we generally interview about 600 applicants from an applicant pool of approximately 1100 per year= 55%. From an out of region pool of approximately 3500 applicants, we generally interview around 65=~2%.
Of the total 660-670 applicants interviewed, offers of admission are made to 216 applicants plus typically about 35 alternates to fill the class of 216 (216/665=32%).
A general way to remember this is that half of all applicants from the WWAMI region will be interviewed and a third of those interviewed will be accepted. We don't set these percentages in advance, but they have remained relatively consistent over the last few years. "

The "After-The-Interview" section also shows that only 48 OOR applicants were accepted, which puts the odds somewhere around 60% if you get an interview. The fuzzy part is how the MSTP applicants are taken into the equation. But still, getting an interview as an OOR applicant gives you some solid odds. It also makes you so unbelievably grateful to be considered in the first place! 😱

Good luck to all of you still waiting to hear back.

AspiringDoc- looks like you are right! I couldn't find that info on their website when I was browsing earlier but apparently my research skills need work 🙂

I guess I was confused how they interviewed 79 and accepted 98 (this is why I thought it was a typo, not bc the # was so low)-- but perhaps that is where the MSTP applicants come into play!

Yeah that whole 98 acceptances/78 interviews is still confusing me...

Wow, I've never caused such a big commotion before! YAY!!!

I know at UW SOM that as an OOR applicant (and non-URM) it is very unlikely that I'll gain acceptance.

While I agree that it is extremely difficult to be accepted OOR, I just wanted to give UWs actual wording, as the above is not quite accurate:

http://www.uwmedicine.org/education...ages/applicationprocedureandrequirements.aspx

Non-WWAMI Applicants: Applicants from outside the WWAMI region who come from either economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and/or who have demonstrated a commitment to serving underserved populations will be considered.

Exento you're right-- what I posted wasn't from the website but word-of-mouth from a Doc there that has done some of the interviewing. So his personal opinion/advice and not UW policy. We all have a chance folks! Good luck!

I'm OOR, got my initial letter on 9/11, got my pre-secondary rejection today. 3.75 GPA, 36 MCAT T__T

good luck to the rest of you guys!

UW - where's the love for IS re-applicants? Substantially improved my app, re-wrote and improved essays on primary and secondary but still no II. Complete 9/11

I got my initial letter 9/7. This is why this site is making me neurotic.

Was it via email?

I'm in the same boat! Complete on 9/13. Here's to hoping everything works out for us!

ii yesterday, in state. Can't believe it. I'm stoked for this one. 🙂

Rejected for interview today. 35T 3.7 GPA In-state applicant (Alaska). I thought this one was a decent shot because I have lots of ECs, 4 years of research, three majors and eight graduate courses and the GPA isn't so bad for the school I'm at, but apparently not. I'm pretty upset (if that's not obvious), because this was my top choice. I also got a somewhat-confusing message about how "we feel you show significant promise and potential and encourage you to reapply if you are not accepted elsewhere." I don't know what that's supposed to mean because it's not as if there's anything that will be fundamentally different about me if I reapply; it's not as though I'll suddenly become a better medical student. Maybe it's something they say to everyone? I don't know.

Anyways, good luck to everyone out there! Especially those of you still waiting on interviews (they'll come!). Though I guess don't get too cocky or else it will be pretty painful when your hopes get crushed. (bitter much?)

Oh, and complete on August 2.

Wow. My condolences. I could have sworn that the Alaska WWAMI program interviewed everyone with >3.5 GPA and >27 MCAT. You're absolutely sure that you met the eligibility criteria for the Alaska WWAMI program? I also thought that I was in the first batch of in-state eligibility reviews (I submitted my residency paperwork mid-July), and I didn't find out I was eligible until 8/24. Are you currently living in Alaska? If not, are you in school full-time somewhere else?

P.S. I'm sure that you received a boilerplate letter; I wouldn't take it personally. However, the Alaska WWAMI program is not averse to re-applicants, and I know that they highly value demonstration of commitment to the state of Alaska, so it could help to re-apply. Also don't forget that for all medical schools, there are more qualified applicants than there are seats. A rejection does not mean that you are an unqualified applicant.

I found the link to the >3.5 GPA >27 MCAT rule, but it's from 2007. They must have changed the process since then.

Thanks for the response! Do you have an MDapps.
Nope, here's some stats though.

3.7, 31Q, >70hrs shadowing primary care and surgery, >200 hrs clinical volunteering with developmentally delayed children and hospice patients, ~4 years research. I know they aren't too big on stats though, so I would interpret with caution. I bet it's the clinical volunteering that helped me out. We'll see though. 🙂
