Wow, I'm surprised to hear they're already starting with interviews! Good luck and congrats to all who've already gotten invites, and to those still waiting :xf:

Seems I'm a bit late to this party myself (amcas verified 10/2, secondary invite 10/4), but I'll be around UWMC as usual next week, and thought I'd check to see if anybody's interested in meeting up afterwards? I was thinking it could be fun to meet others in the same (metaphorical) boat, but no pressure, of course! 🙂

Also what is the difference between OOR and OOS, sorry I'm confused by these acronyms

OOS = Out of state

OOR = Out of region

Since UW participates in the WWAMI (Washington Wyoming Alaska Montana Idaho) program, each of these states are considered "instate" when applying. Each of the states get a set number of seats each year (20 per state besides Washington). Since 5 states are considered instate, we classify people who are not from those states as "out of region."

I hope that clarifies it for you.

The acceptance rate drops significantly if you are OOR/OOS. I am starting to believe that OOR applicants who get in must have either 20 publications, climbed Everest, or have delivered antibiotics on a dogsled to save an Eskimo village in the Arctic. The last one's a shoe in.

Balto can't go to medical school, he's a wolf silly!

Sidenote, I'm OOR and interviewing here early November and I have done neither!

Also sidenote, how far is the seattle airport from UW? How much would cab fare be? Also, anyone want to host me for a night?! 😀

After tip? Probably between $35-45. It takes about a half hour to get from SeaTac (named SeaTac because it is halfway between Seattle and Tacoma) to UWSOM in Seattle. However, taking the light rail is probably way cheaper and the better option.

http://www.soundtransit.org/Schedules/Central-Link-light-rail.xml

Ride it to downtown and then take a bus or get a taxi from there.

Definitely take the light rail then transfer to a bus. Cab will cost a lot. Sounds intimidating but Google "king County metro trip planner" and it will walk you through what you need to do. Oh and bring exact change for the fare 🙂

omg, still waiting for a peep peep from this school. They received the primary 9/4, but all is still quiet...

This is the main misconception of so many OOR applicants. These factors don't matter one iota, what UW looks at for OOR applicants is what is clearly posted on their website and cited in post #281 of this thread.

The comment was blatant exaggeration just for the sake of sarcasm 👍. If any OOR candidate even begins to believe that, they haven't done their research on UWSOM.

Wow. My condolences. I could have sworn that the Alaska WWAMI program interviewed everyone with >3.5 GPA and >27 MCAT. You're absolutely sure that you met the eligibility criteria for the Alaska WWAMI program? I also thought that I was in the first batch of in-state eligibility reviews (I submitted my residency paperwork mid-July), and I didn't find out I was eligible until 8/24. Are you currently living in Alaska? If not, are you in school full-time somewhere else?
.

Nah, the WWAMI thing went through, I'm pretty sure. I definitely got confirmation. Good point though, I sent it in on the very first day but I didn't actually get the certification through Alaska / UAA until the end of August. Forgot about that! And I'm out of state for college.

Thanks for the kind words though. I have gotten an interview invite elsewhere so I'm not completely discouraged yet.

Golly gee, and I thought you was being serious 🙄.

Oh, maybe that's why I said:

One only has to look back at some of the comments on this thread from people shocked at not receiving a secondary even though they have high stats to recognize that this happens frequently, and it happens every year.

Interview invite arrived yesterday. It's my #1 choice by a mile so I'm stoked. WA resident, 3.75 GPA, 3.63 sGPA, 36S MCAT, more volunteering than I can tally (clinical and otherwise), and 60+ hours shadowing. Also, I'm a reapplicant. I'm applying to TRUST so I'm guessing I won't hear back about when for a while (TRUST interviews are all in early Feb).

Would you mind sharing when your secondary was marked complete? Thanks 🙂

I was marked complete on September 12th. II on October 5th.

Congrats! Did you get a chance to interview last year as well then?

Nope, no interview last year. I was borderline for residency at that point and they decided that I counted as an OOR applicant. Thus, my chances were pretty slim on the interview front that year. Thankfully I'm comfortably into the resident category this year.

Not going to lie, pooping bricks about my interview tomorrow.

:scared:

I am interviewing tomorrow too. However, I am a little more worried about my lab report for Wednesday. Drosophila gene expression for days!

Edit:
But tonight I will be focusing on preparing for the interview. This is my top choice.

Good luck you two. Strike that balance between confidence and humility.

So glad to be interviewing in January so I can get all learnt up on things and follow the presidential election thoroughly. I am positive it will be the hot topic this interview season. "Obamacare" vs "Romney care"

II today! In-state, 32R, 3.7 complete 9/17
How long does it usually take for them to assign an actual date?

And how was your interview? Catching up on the lab report?

How did your interview go?

I had a great experience. Interview wasn't as stressful as I had anticipated. I guess reading some of the questions asked in the interview feedback page had me stressing. They asked a lot questions regarding my application and secondary essays. There was one role play scenario having to do with ethics. Nothing out of the ordinary. I was super nervous, but my interviewers were pretty friendly and went above and beyond to put me at ease. I felt like I did extremely well on some questions and fumbled through others, but I think it's expected, especially when you're so nervous. For the first half of the day, they give you this great tour of the facilities, and then they sit you down, as a group, to ask questions of one of their faculty members. The lunch they give you is a sit-down lunch with three of their current students where you can ask whatever you want. Then the day ends with your interview.

This is my top choice, so I'm excited and nervous for what comes next. Best of luck to those of you interviewing tomorrow!

Congrats on the interview! It sounds like you did well 🙂 So no policy/health field questions??

For me, there was only one health policy question and it was in no way as detailed as some of the stuff that's posted on the interview feedback page. If you're up to date on what's currently going on, I think you should be fine.

Interview scheduled! 11/09 Very excited - I've only heard good things about Udub.
Do you guys know if they have a student host program? I'll be traveling from NY.

anyone know when excom is meeting this month? maybe this friday? =)

I looked for that information in the packet they gave us from our interview day, but I can't seem to find an exact date. All I remember from what Ellen Stone said, is that it should take about a month to hear back about their decision.

Are interview invitations random or are there certain days of the week invites are sent out?

Five weeks since primary verification and still not a peep from
UW. It seems like other OORs who were verified after me have been contacted... Should I call them or am I getting a snail mail rejection?

Same. 🙁 I'm also OOR. If I remember correctly, other OOR candidates who were rejected pre-secondary received notification via e-mail, but I could be wrong.

I have been wanting to write this for a few days, but I haven't had internet to write about my experience.

There were only 5 of us the day I interviewed (same day as psychkub). The interview was not stressful at all. All of the interviewers knew my application well and had specific questions for me about it. I was shocked that I did not have an ethics question, but I did have a role play situation. I think I did okay, but I kind of fumbled my way through it. I think I made up for it with my other answers. Definitely seemed like one of the interviewers tried to be the bad cop, but at the end he opened up and was very friendly. Only one interviewer was an MD, another worked at SPU and I don't remember what the third interviewer was. Overall, I think the interview went well. They said it would take about three weeks to hear back about a decision.

Don't expect your interview day to have so few people. We didn't have anyone interview in the morning and then we had at least two people interviewing at all times. I heard that the next day like 15+ people were interviewing, so it can vary.

And like psychkub said, the lunch, tour and discussion is really informal and a nice way to ask questions.

i thought GW interviews were closed filed and each person got a admission committee member and a student interview?

I will address like you said UW this since UW is a semi-closed file interview. What I mean by that is that the interviewers have access to your LOR and application (minus the grades and MCAT score). That means two of the interviewers had read all my experiences, taken notes on my personal statement and had read my secondary essays. The only thing they did not have was the numerical portion of my application, which the third interviewer had. They never even asked about them since they knew I made it to the interview so my scores must have been good enough.

Thanks for sharing your story!

1. This is a relief to hear. Obviously each experience will vary depending on the interviewers, but I have heard some less than awesome stories about UW interviews from multiple people.

2. That is a big surprise, given the emphasis that the dean puts on ethics in her seminars. If I am lucky enough to receive an interview invite the role-playing situation is the only piece that I would be worried a bit about. Did your interviewers get really into each role, or were they more relaxed?

1. I think my interview was non-stressful just because I kept a calm demeanor during the entire thing. If you remain calm and show them confidence, then it isn't so bad. I made sure I answered every question fully and gave example of what I meant.

2. The interviewers did get into the acting, however, these people definitely did not go to school for acting. Haha. I think I did not get an ethics case because my application had a lot of ethics work included. The school says that if they don't question your experience then they will no test it.

INTERVIEW INVITE THIS MORNING!!!!!!:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Reapplicant, complete 9/13, WA resident.

At my interview last week, they said decisions will be made in three weeks. We may not be hearing decisions for another week when the people at the beginning of the month have their three week period end (assuming the school told those interviewees the same thing).
