So excited I got in! (in-state)

Submitted: first day in-state were allowed to apply
Interview: 9/28
Accepted: 11/7 ~1 day before my birthday. what a surprise!

Basic stats: GPA>3.8, 30<MCAT<35, lots of activities

It seems like they made quite a few decisions yesterday. I guess they call non-WARM acceptances too. Good luck for those still waiting!

Put on hold for later review. OOS but strong ties to Wisconsin, so I am kinda disappointed.

Put on hold (IS). This has been a train wreck of a cycle.

+2

IS. Definitely poured my heart out into this application. Absolutely devastated.

I'm trying to be optimistic and consider this a neutral update letter. If they sent us nothing until January it wouldn't be any different. Plenty of people are accepted in spring.

I'm OOS and have been complete since mid-July. I just received an email saying that my app is on hold until January, at which time it will be re-reviewed. I haven't seen anything like this on this thread? Anybody have any insights? Will an interview at that time just be for a wait-list spot?

Just a note for everyone posting that said they are put off until re-review in January.

That happened to me last fall and I honestly assumed it was a denial in everything but name. Heck, after I got that letter I sent out applications to apply to PhD schools

But come January I got another letter saying they wanted to interview me in the 1st week of February, and after that interview I got accepted 🙂

This is all Obama's fault.

Thanks for posting that bro. It's good to hear. Stepping back from the ledge now.

I'm IS, submitted the first day the app opened. Haven't heard a peep since except for the complete email.

Anyone else in the same boat? I'm thinking I'm just waiting for a rejection, but I don't know what's taking so long.

I'm not in the same boat, but it may depend on what your stats look like. If you provide more information about yourself, someone may be able to help you more. Good luck!

Hello.
I don't frequent this forum too much. It has useful information but it can also keep somebody wound up.

I've been accepted at UW Madison for fall 2013.
-I am in-state
-I submitted my AMCAS application on the first day possible
-I submitted my secondary on the first day possible
-my interview day was 10/5/2012
-I got the call on 11/7; the letter on 11/9

I don't have specifics about any particular application cycle. I wish I knew some secret tricks or something but I don't. I can only speak from experience about this process in general.

The rest of this post is for anyone who is re-applying, questioning themselves about the whole process or who may need some encouragement. Remember that it is possible...

It CAN be done.

It may take work (5 years after graduating with my BS, I got a master's degree in that time and boosted my GPA).
It may take re-taking the MCAT (I took a prep course...twice, and retook the MCAT 2x, for a total of 3x - jumping 10pts from lowest cumulative score to highest).
It may take more volunteering (once a week, every week for 4 yrs for me).
It may take shadowing (twice a week for a year for me and once a week for 3 yrs after that).
It may take clinical work experience (20hrs a week for 4 yrs for me).

It probably means forcing yourself to continue when it seems pretty doubtful or pointless; there were plenty of times like that for me.
It certainly meant defending this choice to those throwing other options in your face...PhD, Pharmacy School, PA school, Teaching, Research, etc....

I'm declining to share all the GPAs and MCATs because, in the end; knowing or comparing those don't really matter. What matters is getting there.

At the end of my MCAT prep course the teacher said, "after the test go out and have a party and celebrate" or maybe it was "after you get your scores back go out and celebrate"
I said, "No, I'll celebrate when I get accepted"

On my first ever interview, the interviewer said, "Your MCAT score is really good...".
I replied, "It is what it is. If it needs to be higher I'll do that too."

I might be just a cautionary tale about ways NOT to do this (hint: do everything perfect the first time). But I wanted to write this, hoping that someone who might need some encouragement could have it.

*Don't be afraid of failure, but don't accept it either.
*Find a balance between caring enough that you are really pushing yourself as hard as you can, but not so much that it becomes dangerous.
*Be persistent.

...it IS possible...

I will try and be open to PM communications if anyone wants.

So I've been hoping for some OOS love, and then the temperature dropped and it snowed today. Suddenly, I'm thinking, "Four Wisconsin winters. Hmm."

To ^ VictorAlpha^:👍👍 You are the type of classmate I want to have

It's only been two weeks since my interview but I really can't wait until I hear back from this school! After my interview day it jumped up into my top 3. Everyone there seemed really happy with the place.

It gets worse the closer it gets to finding out.

This could become my first acceptance...but it could also be my first post-interview rejection, which means I'll freak out and start thinking "What if I failed ALL of the interviews???" :scared::scared::scared:

You have four pending decisions. If you don't get into any, it would be pretty unusual. Hang in there.

It's true, but none of the other three were as friendly as UW-Madison 🙂

My only complaint about Madison is that I have no friends or family in the area, but the class seemed so close that I don't think it would be too hard to deal with for four years. Let's hope we find out a little earlier than 6 weeks. 😛

ACCEPTED!!!! 😀😀😀 Got the call last night from Dr. Hansen!

IS, interviewed exactly a month ago (10/12)

Good luck everyone else!!!:luck:

I don't ever post in this forum BUT was floored to receive a call from Dean Hansen last night!! 😍 After they told us to only expect news in the mail, I didn't anticipate that at all.

Interviewed October 12th, IS, regular MD. And my stats are nothing special for UW.

To everyone still waiting: keep the faith!!!! :xf::xf::xf::xf:

congrats to everyone who was accepted recently! just curious, did you all feel really confident coming out of your interview? i feel like mine went pretty terribly haha. at this point i'm expecting a rejection in a few weeks

I had my interview last week. It was my second time applying and felt this experience was a lot better than last time. I really enjoyed being around the other interviewees and the thought of not getting to be around these people for 4 years really upsets me. Isn't that weird? I only spent a few hours with them, but they all seemed so interesting and friendly. They told us 6 weeks, especially with the holidays, so here's hoping for a Christmas miracle.

Interview invite! My second and at such an awesome school!

OOS, stats in MDApps, secondary complete ~9/15 and complete complete around then as well.

Off to go look through the rest of the posts to see about student hosting 🙂

Congrats for the acceptances. Excited for you and hope to have you guys join us next year. Just finished up second block of exams, and I still love it!

And to answer the question about not feeling great coming out of your interview, I definitely felt like I could have done better. For me, the feeling during/after interviews didn't really reflect my acceptance/rejection.

Can you give an estimate of how many of your classmates do research throughout the school year?

If one was to find a very flexible research position (i.e. come and go as you please, any day of the week), would dedicating 10 hours per week be reasonable to accomplish during ms1 and ms2?

...I would plan on doing the "video lecture" schedule, if that makes a difference.

I think the M2s have told us that about ~50% did some sort of research during their first summer ~30% traveled and the remaining did something else (externships, volunteer, work, hang out with family etc). I am still deciding what I want to do and I will say this, there is no pressure to do any ONE thing. Your first summer is for whatever you are interested in.

As far as working on research during M1, (can't really talk about M2 because Im still and M1 🙂 ) I think it may be doable if you found that perfect lab, but for me, I would need the time to study. It honestly depends on how well you feel with the material. And since you can't really know what the material and exams will be like until you actually start, (sorry just thought of the matrix "no one can be told WHAT the matrix is, you have to see it to understand" 🙂 ) it would be hard for me to recommend that you sign up for things i.e. research or ANY type of work before being exposed to the medical school lifestyle and curriculum. I think the added stress and time consumption of working in a lab in your first semester is probably more that you should undertake. Remember, it's not just lectures that happen during the week. There are interest group events, community service events, lectures and talks as well as the required things like studying, patient doctor and society group sessions, GPP, problem exercise activities, epidemiology and CSF group meetings and lastly yes, a social life. I think you could sorely be missing out on many things if you try to add more to your plate than is necessary.

I guess my advice in the end is to not overcommit, especially before you have shown success in medical school. The research opportunities will be there in the summer. But that's just 1 M1's opinion. Hope it helps!

I'm at just over 3 weeks post-interview...think any decisions will go out this week, or will everyone be on Thanksgiving break?

Just expect it to take the full 6 weeks or you'll go crazy in anticipation haha. It's been 5 weeks and I haven't heard anything.

Anyone have the stats on how many IS interviewees are offered acceptance?

Historically, it appears to be:::

Applied, Interviewed, Accepted

IS: 676, 374, 183

OOS: 3225, 185, 104

Here's the exact figures from MSAR.
Last year's IS application info:

Applications: 659
Interviewed: 371
Matriculated: 134

The acceptance number is going to be higher than the matriculation number, so the chances are pretty good for IS applicants.

ACCEPTED TODAY! Just got the call, interviewed 10/26!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Gimme a break!!! Lots of qualified--and overly qualified applicants don't "make the cut" in US med schools every year, and there are plenty of them here on the SDN to prove it. Ultimately, the name of the game is passing the US boards and completing a good residency. If that isn't enough for you, then what is?

Congrats!
IS or OOS?

I'm assuming the social is pretty informal... Street clothes?

Has anyone IS who interviewed on 10/19 heard back yet? I really want to know if they'll get to us before Thanksgiving....

ACCEPTED!!! Got the call from Dr. Hansen, was not expecting that!! My first acceptance! :soexcited:

I have a question. I'm in-state, and I submitted my secondary the first date that in staters are allowed to submit. I have received many emails regarding my residency, and I have replied to all these emails. However, on my status online, it still says that my residency credentials are incomplete. I still haven't heard back from them regarding my application. Am I not hearing back because my residency credentials are incomplete? Should I call them? Or should I just email?

more like 200K if you don't have your living expenses paid for 🙁

I'm in a similar boat. IS, submitted the first day and haven't heard back (however, my residency form is complete). But I do remember hearing/reading somewhere that interview invites were not contingent on residency completeness since you have until next August or something to get them in.

Let me know if you end up calling and asking, I'm really starting to wonder what is going on myself.

Does anyone know if they have sent out rejections to in state people or only invites and "on hold"?

I also have the same issue and would like to know. I still haven't heard back either and I'm IS as well.
