I got a tuition remission scholarship (OOS paying IS prices). UW, I already love you, you don't have to convince me. You can't go any higher on my list!!

I may have to withdraw and re-apply next year. I'm a little more than sad about this. 🙁

A note to future late applicants... read the AMCAS instructions.

Wait, whaaa? If something came up, can't you defer instead of reapplying? Or did you make some kind of typo that drastically altered your stats & influenced your admission?

Hey, Rachel. Sorry to peak your curiosity only to rob you of an answer.

Have you ever heard of the Douglas Adams quote, "the mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the stupidity of complete fools"?

Let's just say it's something like that. I'll tell you about it over coffee if we ever get the chance. I'm assuming you're a coffee drinker from your avatar. If you tell me that that's tea, we will never ever speak ever again. 🙂

For those who have received scholarships: have you submitted FAFSA? Or are the scholarships all merit-based at this point?

Congrats to all acceptances yesterday! @oconsankenobi, did the scholarship letter come in the same mail as your acceptance letter? Also, I wonder y you have to withdraw and reapply?!??!

I also just received a tuition remission scholarship. 😍

Booking my flight to second look today!

The scholarship letter came separately.

Scrape the re-applying. Received my final decision from Dean Hansen this afternoon.

HalfPast6, hope you get some good news soon!

What did you do? The suspense is killing me! Since you got a positive decision, I think you're obligated to explain now.

I submitted my application in a rush. I didn't read the AMCAS instructions and left out some academic history that I thought to be irrelevant. I panicked when I found out AMCAS's policy. I notified Dean Hansen. My application was re-reviewed by the committee to see if the new information would have change the outcome of my acceptance. If it did, I would have to withdraw my applications and re-apply next year (more $$$). I'm incredibly grateful it didn't.

Hope everyone still waiting for an answer hears back soon.

Well congratulations on not having to apply AND getting a scholarship for your first choice. My stats are not outstanding so I don't know if I will get one. I only asked out of curiousity but If I do get one that may just tip me towards matriculating here.🙂

Hey, thanks, Half! Yea... I am BEYOND relieved. Please don't be bum if you don't get a scholarship. Comparatively, the tuition here is ridiculously affordable. OOS or IS, you would still be getting a solid medical education at a good tuition rate. If it makes you feel any better (schadenfreude), I'm drowning in educational debt (undergraduate and graduate school loans). The scholarship doesn't touch the surface of what I'll be paying back after med school. I don't know how UW SMPH stays afloat while charging the tuition rate it does... but I'm sure glad it's around!

I have heard in years past the interview was not a large factor in the admissions process, but the adcom has tried to rectify this in recent years. Can any students or possibly Drizzt weigh in on this? I interviewed in Feb and my interview was the best of the 3 I have had. The other two went well but ended up being WL decisions. I'm somewhat anxious about this decision now, and can't help but wonder if the interview didn't matter all that much. The fact that I interviewed in Feb. makes me think the adcom wasn't very impressed with my app, given the fact that they openly state they interview the best applicants first. I realize that there are open seats in the class.

Does anyone know where the academic calendar can be found? I need to know the timing of the break between year 1 and year 2.

I think it can be found on the med student website: uwmedstudents.com

I'm not positive tho, worth a look.

A few questions for current students (or anyone familiar with Madison!).

I am not from Wisconsin- I've only been to Madison for my interview day. However, I am pretty sure I will matriculate here.

1. What are good areas to live in? I will be bringing my dog so that kind of limits things. I'd like to be close to campus so I can get home relatively quickly to let her outside during the day. A yard would be kind of ideal. I don't want to be isolated, but I don't want to be on frat row.
2. How much do you ACTUALLY spend on living (food/rent/whatever else that isn't tuition) expenses? I got a handout from UW saying that $1800 is a good amount to spend per month. Doesn't that seem pretty steep?
3. Should I bring my car?
4. Are OOS students happy? I've heard that a lot of social groups are already established before orientation because a lot of students went to UW undergrad together.
5. Do any current students have dogs and how do they manage?

Thanks in advance! I plan to be there for Revisit weekend so I hope to meet some of you guys in person! 🙂

not a med student obviously but i've been living in madison for the last 5.5 years, the last 7 months have been on the west side of madison in an area where a lot of grad/med students live.
1) it might be a challenge to find a place where a) dogs are allowed b) close enough to zip home quickly to let your dog out and c) a yard. i'm sure it's possible but i'm only familiar with apartment style housing so i'll let someone else answer this one. keep in mind that parking at the hospital/med school is ridiculously expensive so if you're looking to be within walking distance and fit all of this criteria.... this could be a challenge. there's a great metro system here tho, so that could be helpful for you.
2) this year I am living in a one bedroom near the Hilldale area, my rent is $760 a month with all utilities except electricity. my heat is included. this is a BIG one - i recommend trying to find a place with heat included. last year, i paid upwards of $100 a month from december-march for heat. as far as other expenses, i suppose this is up to you and your living requirements- ie the type of food you buy/if you want an extensive cable package, etc. i don't think you need to reasonably expect to spend $1800, but this is coming from a single person with no major financial requirements at the moment.
3) this is up to you. as I said, parking at the med school is crazy expensive so don't expect to drive yourself to class if you have it. that being said, for other extracurricular/weekend plans, it might be nice. parking isn't too expensive at most apartments- free at mine.
4) can't comment on this bc I'm one of the WI residents. but I will say that, if I end up matriculating here, i "know" maybe 1-2 other people. and by "know" i mean they are barely acquaintances. so i'm certainly in no "social group" ahead of time. no idea what the case with other wi residents is though, but keep in mind that UW is a HUGE undergrad campus and we all don't know each other, plus a lot of wi residents who get accepted have been out of school for a few years
5) can't answer this

Hey, my dog is joining me as well. We will need to set up a play date! I've been doing some research on housing myself. Found some great dog-friendly 1 bedroom apartments downtown right next to the park/water. The prices range from 800-1200.

On my interview day a couple of the students said to post these questions on the uwmedstudents.com website to get an answer. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the website to post the questions on the forum yet. I also have a dog... Thus I have the same concerns. 🙂 I'm sure each of us will find something!

Thank you! I've never lived in a snowy climate and was unsure if I should look for a place that includes heat or not!

Are there certain apartment complexes that are "popular" with med students & grad/health science students? I'm seeing stuff about locations west of the stadium, and near the Hilldale area being popular with the medical students.

There's so many apartment complexes on old university ave and by Hilldale I'd imagine they each have their share. Idk if one is the "most" popular for med specifically

That sounds like a plan! Maybe we can start a med students with dogs extracurricular group. I am joking, kind of.. 😛 But honestly, who wouldn't like that?

That sounds excellent! I'd join! Weekend hiking trips!

When I was apartment hunting, I toured 2 units that were dog friendly and near the hospital. The manager was super nice and the tenants who lived there seemed to like him. He said it was mostly grad/med/vet students with pets that have lived there. It has a small yard. Might want to check it out.

Not the best website, but shows the 2 units are still available:

Good luck!

Yes!! What are you guys gonna do with your dogs for away rotations in 3rd and 4th year? I'm kind of worried about that.

Well, if our away rotations don't overlap, I'm glad to take care of your guy/girl for a while! My guy could use the company. He will probably be living my parents or my brothers for the month/few months of the away rotation.

For everyone else, has anyone lived downtown in the isthmus and taken a bus into the medical school? It seems like a 15-20 min bus from the isthmus to HSLC, which isn't bad at all!

This is why I liked Madison so much- the people! 🙂

I got the acceptance phone call yesterday. Interviewed 02/15, OOS. Super excited and definitely matriculating here. GL to everyone else still waiting.😍

Congrats! I interviewed with you but I'm IS. Maybe I'll get an answer next week. Let the anxious waiting begin!

So, I get a call from my mentor, a doctor at UW, urging me to come to UW and telling me that he spoke with the chair on admissions and they said they are planning to offer me scholarships to get me to stay at UW! Good problems? I had a great undergrad at UW, and the school is great, but I kind of settled on getting a new experience and venturing to a different state, with a more diverse patient population. Now I am so torn, because turning down scholarships is crazy, and I love my mentor and would like to keep the relationship we built and possibly get on some research with him or his department. What is a girl to do!?!? I understand that I am super fortunate, don't get me wrong, but this is a hard choice seeing as it could shape my entire career! :scared: :help:

Omg I am going through the same thing right now! I am so ready to leave Madison but feel like I'd be a fool to turn down the tuition. Its a good problem to have but still!

Definitely agonizing! I will PM you so we can discuss this more without annoying our fellow SDNers with our "good complaints" lol.

Does any current Madison resident know which neighborhoods to search for apartments near the medical center? The nearby apartments are pretty expensive. 😳

I wouldn't mind joining in this discussion as I've never lived in Madison before. 🙂

I don't think you guys need to feel bad about discussing this on the general forum, if it's something that you two are struggling with chances are that others are as well. As long as it is a post to ask for ideas or advice and not just to complain about how awesome things are (congrats to both of you by the way) I think it is perfectly fine. Perhaps others feel differently, if so I guess they can voice their feelings.

Any suggestions on how to go about the apartment search (beyond that one site they tell you to search on)?

I find these two sites helpful:

Padmapper

The second link isnt map based, so IMO its not as nice, but has most of the Hilldale/near west apartments. You can also select other areas of madison near the top.

This is true, about 2 application cycles ago UW increased the weight that interviews carry towards the admissions decision. The faculty interview is still equally weighted with the med student interview. The adcom already thinks you have a good app and will likely make a good doctor if you were invited to interview, they wouldn't waste an interview on someone if they weren't interested in you coming here. It's just a very competitive process and we start to run out of spots in the class this late in the year so they're more picky about who gets a direct acceptance vs. waitlist or rejection. Best of luck!
