This is on the secondary:

"Indicate the name and year, if known, of relative(s) with relationships with our insitution: currently enrolled at or alumnus of Wake Forest University School of Medicine or Wake Forest University; House Officer of North Carolina Baptist Hospital; on the Faculty of Wake Forest University Health Sciences."

What do they mean by "year." Birth year of relative? Age? Year in school (but what if relative is a graduate)? Year of graduation?

Where you actually enter the value, it says "Years" if that helps at all.

Your assistance is appreciated.

I would go with years attended.

Just out of curiosity...what makes you choose SLU over Wake?

MDApps says they were offered a scholarship at SLU? I agree with hmoactktey, open up some spots for the rest of us! The acceptance train is starting to fill up. I want to be able to join the club after my interview and not have to sit at the waiting station!

I got into both of these two as well? Which are you leaning towards. I'm pretty sure I'll be choosing SLU!! 😀

It's so hard because I totally fell in love with both programs. I'll probably choose Wake because I'm an NC resident, but it's a tough call. I'm going to see if Ii recieve a substantially better financial aide package from one or the other. Congratulations! I'm sure you feel just as elated as I do.

One thing to remember if you're interested in staying in NC for the long term:

For Wake Forest, the state of NC will loan you up to $56,000 throughout your four years of medical school. Then, after residency, if you practice in NC for at least four years in ANY specialty in ANY region, the $56,000 loan will be entirely forgiven. If you leave NC, it just becomes a regular loan. More info here: http://www.cfnc.org/FELS

Of course, the same program applies at UNC and ECU...just imagine how cheap THOSE schools would be if you utilized this loan repayment program!! 🙂

Well I guess they got back to us earlier than they said! Received an admissions decision email just now.

That's amazing! I'm surprised they didn't mention it in financial aide talk at Wake, although I guess they aren't catering exclusively to NC residents. Certainly something very useful to keep in mind. $56,000 is quite a chunk of change!

They mentioned it on my interview day because I asked a few questions about how students can pay off debt.

On my interview day they asked if anyone was an NC resident, then talked about this program briefly during the financial aid session. I'll admit that I was pretty jealous; there's nothing that great in my state!

Hi all -

I was wondering if anyone out there could sing me the virtues of WF? I am doing the secondary, and I'm having trouble finding unique information about Wake. What makes it special, what type of student would be a best fit here?

I am an older student - 34, transitioning from another career. I now do cancer research and will most likely pursue hematology. I am VERY excited about med school and want to convey this to Wake, but I also want to be specific to their school.

Any help would be great!!

Interviewing on December 3. Just to confirm, Wake doesn't have student hosting?

It will be hard to demonstrate a special interest in the school when you took so long to send the secondary (or maybe you just got the secondary, but that would mean you didn't designate them on AMCAS until way late). Unless you can come up with something convincing, it may be in your best interest to just be honest (not make something up about why you like them) and hope they like the rest of your application.

So I got verified early October (very late I know) and I have received secondaries from all the schools I applied to except for this one. I have a 37 mcat and a 3.9+ Gpa, so I dont think it is a screening issue. Is it normal for Wake to take a long time to send the secondary?

Thanks.

Yes. I think it's been said they only send them every two weeks, but they also have to screen you in first, so it could take even longer than that. And Wake doesn't just screen by the numbers so they actually have to look at your app before sending you the secondary.

For one I felt more comfortable in the city atmosphere of St. Louis. Winston-Salem is just too small with nothing to do. SLU is block with pass/fail and they weren't as pushy as far as the specialty I was thinking about going into. I felt antagonized in my interviews a bit at Wake Forest because I admitted that I wasn't really interested in going into primary care (which is a major focus at Wake Forest). And I felt the students at SLU were more approachable when I was there versus at Wake Forest.

Well tell Wake now and help out the rest of us!

I told them I would be coming the day after they sent me the offer...however I don't think I'm the only one holding up all the people on the waiting list...i've heard that the majority of their enrolled students come off the waiting list.

Alternate list...How soon should I send a letter of intent? Is there a such thing as too soon? Can any current students out there comment on how they wrote the letter? Thanks.

I'm guessing it's too soon. They've only had 1 round of decisions and the deadline for decisions is May 15th (over 6 months away!). If it's your #1, maybe you could contact the admissions office and asking their opinion. At any rate, the cycle started only 8 days ago, so I'd definitely give it some time. I get the feeling the alternate list at most schools will remain relatively unchanged until they've actually decided on a good number of their interviews (maybe by December?).

Yeah, I'm a first year here, I wrote my letter of intent April 1st, I had a very scattered interview schedule, so I was interviewing though March, I knew Wake was my #1 choice, but I wanted to give all the schools a fair shot. I would say finish out a comfortable number of interviews first, and then write it, another school may surprise you. Also, to clear up some falsities on this thread, Wake is hardly a 'primary care' focused school. Yes, wake has the Community practice experience as part of their curriculum, but so do Duke and UNC, and with the rising board scores here over the past few years, Wake is looking to keep it's match list competitive with Duke, Vandy, MUSC and UNC. We are certainly very different from a school like ECU, which is heavily primary care oriented. Surgery is huge here, especially plastics, ortho, and trauma,

My apologies for being lazy, but it is difficult to sift through the whole thread while on my phone. But, how long after receiving the 'complete' email did everyone wait before receiving an update? Or is the complete email just a hold status?

Just received the secondary today and submitted it 🙂 How long is the wait time looking so far for an interview decision?

I did designate them on AMCAS early, but I didn't take the MCAT until 8/10/12 which help up my application to all schools.

I turned in my secondary within their 3-week allowance of time, so I think they'll see that I chose them early on and have been timely with my secondary.

I think there are plenty of reasons to choose Wake, but was hoping to get some more by people responding to my post. Since I'm interested in hem-onc, I chose to speak about their cancer center (among other things). Now I'll just have to wait to find out.

How long do they usually take to get back? If they're like the other schools I've applied to, that's probably open-ended.

oh ok, you're in good shape then. There is a huge variation in how long they take to send an II. Mine was 2 days after I submitted the secondary. Others have been much longer.

Finally got my secondary. Is it common to leave the personal statement section blank? I usually do not answer additional comment sections, but this one is asked in a way where it seems more mandatory.

What did you guys do?

If a school gives you a chance to brag about yourself... Take advantage of it. Don't leave an opportunity like that blank.

Wrote one sentence (ties to state), and got an interview. If you don't have anything new to say I think they appreciate not having their time wasted.

So I was searching through the thread, and I don't think the U.S. news stats have been posted on here yet. Could someone who has access post them? (applied, interviewed, accepted, matric, etc). Thanks!

Is the website to check one's application status down for anyone else?

I wrote a short (<200 word) essay about my personal story and how Wake Forest is a good "fit." I was accepted back on October 15th. I'm only one person though, and it looks like other have had success not writing the essay.

I got an interview without writing the optional essay

anyone who interviewed the week of October 15 hear back yet? crossing my fingers!.. status says I'm scheduled for an interview... weird!

I interviewed on Oct 15th. I think they said we should hear something around 2nd/3rd week of November. If I remember correctly from the interview day, they have the next admissions review meeting scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday in November, and they said they would notify applicants a few business days after that.

Status changed to complete, 1-2 weeks for a decision now I guess! Letter of interest was also received earlier today, hoping for the best 🙂. I guess I'm different than a lot of people... after living in a populated city, I can't wait to live in a more rural type of area.

I have been confirmed application complete since September 26th. Checking for an II everyday!
