Nope I am out of state and don't know too much about north carolina either... But congratulations on the invite!

Thanks you too! I just scheduled for the first week of December.

Edit: Just looked at USnews rankings from last year and it seems WF is #19 in primary care. Is WF considered a top 20 school?

I could be wrong, but I don't think Wake is considered top 20

Yeah, usually when people refer to a "Top 20" school, they are referring to the US News research rankings, which are largely determined by the total amount of research dollars a medical school brings in. Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Penn...those are some of the places usually vying for the top spot in research rankings.

Wake Forest's current research rank is #42 (which puts it roughly in the top quarter of all medical schools), while it's primary care rank is #19 (almost but not quite the top 10 percent of all schools). Also, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (the affiliated hospital) is fairly well known nationally.

Also, if any of you OOS-ers have questions about NC, I have lived here my whole life! It's an interesting place to say the least, but at the end of the day, I think it's a great place to live and to be happy.

To be fair, a lot of schools do not report their numbers. If you only count the schools that report Wake is in the top 50% and 25%. Still impressive. I just try to keep in mind rankings tell you little about how much you'll like the school

Yeah, you're absolutely right on both points. In any case though, Wake Forest has a very good reputation, and you will not be held back by lack of research opportunities.

Thanks guys. I didn't think Wake was in the top 20 (I don't pay a lot of attention to rankings anyway), but for whatever reason I decided to look it up and noticed how high Wake is in primary care.. and as you mentioned, not too shabby in research either.

Any suggestions on where to stay and/or where not to stay? I have stayed at many hampton inns so far this cycle and I really like them, but the one near Wake doesn't offer a shuttle service to the interview so I'm not sure I want to stay there.

Im staying at a Whyndamm with a shuttle!

You mean the Wyndam? How much was your room? I might stay there too. I have an interview for early December. Anyone care to give any advice on the interview?

ya sorry, Wingate by Wyndham. I think it was like 87 on expedia! Can't comment on the interview yet as It hasn't happened yet lol

not to the school but to the airport. Its super close the the school and I'll just take a cab or walk. I'm used to walking ~2 miles to work in the morning anyway

Count me among those who just received an II. I'm incredibly surprised - I've been complete since August 8th - but very excited! Looking forward to learning more about this school.

Oh that's good to know. We're talking about the Piedmont Triad International Airport right? Is it free?

Ya, PTI. I think its free. Hotel shuttles usually are.

Nice. I'll probably see you there then. Dec. 7th right? Are you flying into Greensboro?

Well then consider me sold on that hotel. Admissions said the school is about 45 minutes from the airport.. That's probably a $50+ cab ride!

Just got off the phone with them. They don't do a hotel shuttle anymore.

When I called they offered Nov 27th, as well as a handful of dates in early December that were all Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

I saw an interesting thread somewhere else on the board and it's perked my interest....does anyone know FOR SURE--whether you got your info from your interview day, youre a medical student there, etc--what the schedule during your week is like? More specifically, what are the hours you're in lecture hours?

I can't seem to find my interview day packet, and I know that information was in there.

Also accepted today!! Interviewed 10/16. So excited to receive my first acceptance!

I'm trying to learn more about the curriculum, but I can't find anything detailed.

This is all I've found: http://www.wakehealth.edu/school/curriculum.htm

Is it systems? PBL?

Go to http://www.wakehealth.edu/mdprogram/year-iv-guide/ and click on "Admissions Bulletin" on the right side of the page. It has more detailed information about the integrated curriculum which includes a combination of lectures, labs, small groups, and case-centered learning. I thought the information session on interview day was excellent and helped me learn a lot about Wake. Hope this helps!

Excellent, thank you!

Edit: seems to me it's a pbl curriculum or "case based learning"? Is it primarily pbl with some lecture mixed in or the other way around?

I think they said 4 mornings a week were lecture/lab and 1 or 2 afternoons of small group/case based learning. There's also a doctoring class maybe once a week? Everything you learn each week is based on the same topic. So the information taught in lecture is reinforced in lab and small group cases with faculty facilitators. Maybe a current student could clarify but this was my impression from the information given during the interview day.

Interesting. I'm really starting to lean towards school with pbl or at least a significant pbl component.

My student tour guide was really excited about the Case based learning sections yesterday when she was talking about it. She said that on mondays her group (groups are 4-7 people) would get together with a faculty person and are presented a case to discuss. By the end of that section they come up with learning objectives for the case to research during the week. On Fridays the reconvene to discuss what they learned from their research. Sounds like a good way to learn!

Agreed!

so, i got put on the alternate list. i liked the school so i'm trying to not hold it against them. does anyone know if they actually let people in off the alternate list after every committee meeting? or am I going to have to wait until april? will they email me after every meeting with my status?

sorry if this has been said or answered already, but would anyone happen to know if it is preferable to send an update/interest letter addressed to the admissions committee or to the dean. If the latter, does anyone have the dean's contact info? ( Couldn't find it)

Thanks so much! I've been placed on what seems like a preinterview hold and would love to get an interview from Wake.

I was put on the waitlist on the 10/15, sent a LOI, and then got accepted on 11/8! So they do look at the waitlist at each committee meeting 🙂

I called the admissions office and the lady I spoke to told me to address it to Dr. Grier. Hope that helps!
