2013-2014 Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University

What are everyone's thoughts about attending a new medical school such as Netter?

Is anyone nervous about board scores or matching into the residency of their choice?

Just curious on what everyone thinks since this is a concern of mine before making my final matriculation decision

If you have a cheaper offer elsewhere then go there. Proven track record + low cost = amazing. If it's comparable then I don't think being a new school matters too much.

Netter seems a little disorganized for elective rotations fourth year. They have a required elective fourth year and then you have time off for your capstone thingy. Leaving you little time to audition, which sucks but not the end of the world. Med school is a lot of self learning for the most part and I think that's going to be similar across all medical colleges. Looking at 3rd and 4th year is what really sets a school apart, in my opinion.

what schools are you deciding between?

Thanks for the reply! I'm deciding between netter and Rowan SOM. My first impressions of both were very good, but the technology, area hospitals, facilities, and environment just seemed more appealing to me at netter. And not to spark a debate about this but I am preferring the MD degree and I don't have a good reason for it, it's just my gut feeling and desire to pursue an ACGME residency. This is why I'm nervous about attending a new school since there is no match list to refer to.

I am also aware of the merging of the DO/MD residencies but I still don't know if this will eliminate the bias of "old school residency directors" preferring MDs over DOs, it's not right at all because the training is identical but I have a feeling this bias/mistreatment still occurs in some programs. Thoughts?

To throw in another loop I am interviewing at Albany med next month, not sure if this will affect anything

Well, I'll advise you to not to wait up for Albany. If you're not one of the few who are outright accepted, you may not hear a decision until August... so I would make up your mind between Netter and Rowan and really commit to one of them as fully as possible. You don't want to find yourself high and dry way way late in the summer. If Albany comes through, then that's just icing on the cake. 🙂

For my unhelpful opinion, if I were you, I would choose 1) Albany 2) Netter 3) Rowan. I certainly have no DO bias (I'll probably be at MSU), but I really enjoyed Albany and think Netter has a lot to offer (though I did not interview). I believe Rowan is a great school, but there is, and will be, plenty of DO haters as long as there are two degrees for physicians. There's certainly a big environment difference between Albany and Netter, so it may be down to your personal preference. Good luck -- and congratulations on being lucky enough to have a tough decision to make. :hardy:

Thanks for your input johnamo, one more question and I'll stop taking over the thread lol, why did u rank Albany over netter?

Is it the reputation? Or personal preference of location?

Albany has a track record and is nearly equal cost to netter. I would speculate that's why they ranked it higher.

Haha well they interviewed me... 😉

Kidding aside, I got the feeling that Albany is uniquely situated due to their location in the medical center. I believe it would give a better, earlier, and broader exposure to all walks of medicine and specialties than Netter. As the poster above pointed out, Albany also has solid match results and a good reputation while Netter is a big question mark. I really have no location preference per se. I'm sure that Netter has a lot going for it -- especially the beautiful facilities I'm sure they have! I expect they'll build a great reputation and match lists over time.

If you want my opinion, then i'd say go for quinnipiac. The do and md debate can be argued forever but there is more value in an MD degree at this moment in time.

Like John said, don't wait up for albany, i think they interview ~1000 applicants (right or is that nymc?). Any ways, quinnipiac is a good school and the administration seems to be taking it in the right direction. I wouldn't be worried if I were you, plus the location of quinnipiac is much better than rowan, imo.

Definitely, interview at Albany and keep your options open but Quinnipiac is still a good school! I know the admissions office is open to accepted students to hear about concerns so call them up. If I was in your position I would say Quinnipiac > Albany (mainly cuz of location and price) > Rowan. Good Luck!

I just want to clarify and say that I have absolutely no qualms about DO and have applied to some schools myself. The students in the schools were fantastic and I have met superb DO physicians, but even with the merger it is safer to go MD over DO for NOW.

Good luck you got into some great schools 🙂

Yep -- Albany is interviewing 1100+ this year (with the recent introduction of the MMI).

You guys are awesome- thanks for all your opinions! 🙂

just got an II haha, wasn't expecting that. 3.72 gpa, 30 mcat, in state if anyones wondering. This seems like a crazy late invite.
Wow, congrats that is awesome! I know time is winding down for IIs... what dates did they give you for interview options?

From what I heard, interviews are done and all those in limbo will get an email within the next week. Cue music, dim lights...

You are correct, this friday is the last Interview day. I called last week to check-in, so good luck! They said all other applicants will hear back with a rejection email within about 2 weeks.

Just spoke to admissions. A little disappointing. It sounds like we most likely will not hear from the school until May 15, possibly April 15. They are still interviewing applicants and seem to be more inclined to hand out initial acceptances rather than take people off of the wait list. I just wish I could find out approximately how many people are on the list..anyone have an idea? My guess is that there will be a good amount of wait list movement but if there are over a hundred people on the wait list it doesnt mean much

So interviewing is done? Anyone who hasn't received an ii at this point is now rejected?

Answered my own question. Rejected pre-interview about 20 minutes ago.

Yeah, I'm still pre-interview at 5 or so schools, but I fully expect rejections.

Yup, rejection. No surprise there. Still have 4 schools to hear from but I am pretty positive they are all rejections.

I guess now we all just wait it out with what we have. Best of luck to you all!

Heya!

Just wanted to put one last link for accepted applicants to join the FB Group:

Hi I'm a recently accepted student and I am a little worried that since this is a new school it won't give the same type of education that an older school will. Can you shed some light on that? Also how generous are they with financial aid?

For those of you who withdrew, how long did it take to get your deposit back?
