2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You are tearing it up with the interviews! Congrats!

Appreciate it! Congrats on your II too...mine's not til late October so they must want to see you way before they see me 😉

Hello GW applicants,

I am confused about something on the secondary:
Did you indicate that you were the recipient of any institutional action on your AMCAS application? (500 characters)

I have already answered yes and wrote a short for this question on AMCAS. What do they expect to add with the 500 characters?

Don't apply to this medical school. Don't do it.
Someone committed suicide when they literally couldn't pass second year.

TROLL ALERT. This person posted in the Mayo forum the exact same post. TROLL

That sounds like more of a personal decision than institutional failure? Are you attributing the cause to GW's lack of curricular preparation or to inadequate administrative student support?

lol not only that but this person has a post titled:

Subject: "is harvard medical school hard?"
Content: "a chinese girl who got accepted into hms said it isn't, just wondering though"

definitely a troll

Also, when I asked if crowdfunding was a viable way to raise money for interviews this troll told me to work at a chinese buffet. Mods please ban this creep.

Oopsies, sorry for fueling the fire. :scared:

At least he didn't tell you to work at Old Country Buffet

Hold status sometime today. Complete 8/14ish. Hoping my hold transforms to an II!

Does anybody know the general timeline of the day? When it ends? I'm trying to buy plane tickets!

crunch811 - If you haven't already found this information, look for it in the invitation to interview email. My interview day is scheduled from 9:30-3pm, but yours could be different.

Interviewing here on Thursday! Who's with me? Looking forward to meeting you folks.

Haha, I just PMed you from the Columbia thread and here you are! I'm flying back to MA at 7:30pm the night of the interview. Are we going to be on the same flight by any chance?

I'll be there on Friday! Anyone else?

Put on hold. Not sure when, but within the past week. I was complete mid-August.

I wonder if it is still worth it for me to submit my secondary here... I am a bit late... I am interested in the school but my MCAT scores are low but I have a highish GPA... I am also a URM...

i would say apply. based on their programs, they care about URM .

So in the SDN interview feedback it says that the admissions committee sometimes asks applicants to introduce themselves in front of the group and tell everyone something that's NOT on their AMCAS application. Do you think this is more of a fun fact ordeal or a chance to gun? I feel like I always get called on first for these things, and always look ridiculous in hindsight...🙄

😕

...say something fun. All the impressive stuff should already be on AMCAS

Mention how much you bench or some sort of awesome parkour/ninja skills.

Haha that's what I figured. But then I envisioned myself talking about cartwheels and then the next dude puffing up his recent Nature publication... 😎

I'm really horrible at ice breakers. Like really, really bad. For one of my English classes, we went around talking about our favorite foods. And I LOVE food. So how could I possibly pick my favorites? I stuck to the basics and chose bread and water. Did I mention it was a course in third world literature?

Congrats to those invited! Just wondering, anyway I can see some of the type of things you guys talked about on the secondaries? It's proving hard for me to answer some of the questions while trying not to repeat some things from the personal statement. Thanks in advance

If you need to ask this question, it's a little sad. These are supposed to be personal responses to some pretty broad and (with some thought) easily-answerable questions. Especially if it's for the 'Why GW' type of essay.

I understand that they are personal questions, but so is a personal statement. You are telling me you never looked at a personal statement from anyone else to get an idea of how they are written?

Interview Invite today!!!! So excited!
Complete 8/15, and my status never changed (I'm pretty sure I checked it every day).

cGPA 3.55, gGPA 3.71, 30 MCAT, non-trad

Hey GW hopefuls--first year here--if any of you guys have questions you can't find an answer to, feel free to ask.

Good luck!

If you need to repeat some things that you mentioned in your personal statement, I do not think that would be a big deal considering they do not specifically say that it has to be something that isn't anywhere else in your application. That being said, here are some topics I wrote about and some thoughts on what you should think about to adequately answer the question.

For the activities question, I wrote it a list. I wrote what I would be doing Aug-Dec, the activities with a VERY brief description, and then said total hours. I did the same for Dec-July.
For the achievement question, you can consider many things as a personal achievement. It doesn't have to be research, or you led this organization, or anything that is recognized by others. I talked about how establishing financial independence and paying for school without student loans was my most significant achievement.
When talking about diversity and how you can contribute, think about where you are from, your interactions with people of other races and backgrounds, and what you learned from them. How is what you learned going to make you a better physician? Can your classmates learn from you? Are there any experiences that others may not have encountered that could give you a different perspective on situations that could be relevant in medicine? Did you already talk about experiences in your personal statement that are unique? If so, briefly mention them again and then discuss how others can learn from you.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

If I submit my application in October/November, as an OOS is that too late? I ran out of $$ for applications, credit card is maxed, so I'm waiting on a financial aid check so I can add to AMCAS and pay the secondary fee.

Stats:

OOS
26 y/o, non-URM male
3.3 c/sGPA
30 MCAT
3.85 grad GPA
2 years full time research (neuro)
1 year graduate research (stem cells)
~350 hours clinical volunteering
~50 hours non-clinical volunteering
Shadowed 4 doctors

Anyone with access to usnews mind sharing GW's interview statistics? (like how many are accepted from the interviees)

November would probably be pushing it. Consider getting close family/friends to spot you some dough for the time being? Its clearly for a good cause, haha.

Would I still be safe in October do you think? (Talking like mid October)....

Believe me, if borrowing money was an option for me, I wouldn't be writing these posts!

Figures are for OOS, which is everyone who doesn't live in DC, obviously.

1100/14700 interviewed, 316/1100 accepted.

Can any current student share what really distinguishes GW from other schools? I set up my interview date in October but would love to learn more about it beforehand? Is it more research or patient-care centered? Is there early clinical integration? Etc. Thanks in advance for any info!

Go on their website, they are candid about their missions and goals as a medical program

Yeah I figured that you would have already contemplated that idea.
In any case, seeing as how GW interviews into March, I think you should be straight if you complete the app in October.

I know! I sure hope that, wherever I end up, I get enough financial aid to make payments on all these maxed credit cards...!!

Placed on hold, not sure when but it is within the past week.
