2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
LOL I've been on hold for almost two months. Pretty sure THAT'S game over 😛

For sending "In the area" notifications, do you send an actual email, or use their secondary's 'update' function?

Also - would it be inadvisable to send a notification if I'm currently on hold (and therefore, not being actively considered for an interview at the moment?)

how long after you guys were complete did you receive a hold status?
also, is it an issue that i never received a 'complete' email? My online application says that my application is complete though.

Ive heard you just log in and check your status. My status hasn't changed yet. Its making me nervous.

Been on hold for over a month now. 3.8/29 with a 3.95 the last 3 years of undergrad. Currently working as an EMT...I don't know what else I could be doing to boost my application! So frustrating 🙁

the complimentary lunch on interview day is excellent. Pleasantly Surprised 🙂

I've been on hold for about a month and am trying to send in an extra letter of recommendation. For any letter update, I still have to go through AMCAS service, right? Has anyone tried to do this as well?

Has anyone had a status change recently? If so, could you let us know when you were complete? I'm just trying to gauge what complete date they've reached.

I was put on hold for re-review, complete 8/30

It really was fantastic. I hoarded my brownie for later...

I was soooo pumped when I rediscovered the brownie in my purse during my flight home.

Edit: 666th post in this thread!

Been complete since 8/18 with no status change...I'm getting nervous since I really like GW! Is it worthwhile to update my file if I've gotten a new position since I submitted my application? I will begin the position in October but I have completed the training for it. :| Or should I wait until it begins?

To the people on hold for re-review, did you receive an e-mail indicating that you were on hold? (i.e. an e-mail after the one saying your application is complete.)

From what I understand, no status change is more likely that you'll get an interview than a hold status.

Complete mid July, on hold well over a month.

Should I send pre-interview updates? For those with II, did you send pre-interview updates and if so, were they effective?

There were vegetarian options, not sure about vegan though.

Do you guys think they will send acceptance emails immediately on oct 15th?

Do you guys think they will send acceptance emails immediately on oct 15th?

The AAMC traffic rules say "after October 15," so at least one school I've interviewed at has said that 10/16 would be the first day they could send out notices of acceptance. However, in last year's thread, the first posts about GWU acceptances having come out were made on 10/15 at 8:49 AM.

If you need to repeat some things that you mentioned in your personal statement, I do not think that would be a big deal considering they do not specifically say that it has to be something that isn't anywhere else in your application. That being said, here are some topics I wrote about and some thoughts on what you should think about to adequately answer the question.

For the activities question, I wrote it a list. I wrote what I would be doing Aug-Dec, the activities with a VERY brief description, and then said total hours. I did the same for Dec-July.
For the achievement question, you can consider many things as a personal achievement. It doesn't have to be research, or you led this organization, or anything that is recognized by others. I talked about how establishing financial independence and paying for school without student loans was my most significant achievement.
When talking about diversity and how you can contribute, think about where you are from, your interactions with people of other races and backgrounds, and what you learned from them. How is what you learned going to make you a better physician? Can your classmates learn from you? Are there any experiences that others may not have encountered that could give you a different perspective on situations that could be relevant in medicine? Did you already talk about experiences in your personal statement that are unique? If so, briefly mention them again and then discuss how others can learn from you.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks a lot. This helped a lot and I am pretty much done with the secondary application. Only one other question to make clear, for "what is your specific interest in the md program at gw?" I am a bit confused as to what we are being asked about. Is it the specialty choice? Thanks in advance.

Submitted about 2-3 weeks ago. Updated my file today with some grade updates and fun community work I've done during my current internship. Still in "Your file is now complete" limbo.

Would you guys say its too late to apply here? I just finished to the secondary

Think of the question as "Why will GW make you the physician you want to be?" Is it the curriculum or programs they offer? Why GW medical school? What makes it different than other schools, and why will this be conducive to your education in becoming a doctor?

II!!! So excited, this is my first one! Im a Maryland resident (so I guess I'm as close to a "IS" as DC gets)

when did you two submit your secondaries, if you don't mind me asking?

I was complete 7/15/2013 (MCAT:34, GPA: 3.9, OOS). On hold. I don't know what to expect from GW.

I was complete on the 23rd as well, still no updates..will they email you if you're placed on hold?

I was complete around August 23rd

Thanks for the response! Did you status ever change to on hold? I completed mine on 29th but it hasn't changed to anything, still complete 🙁.

Congrats! did you status ever change??

Thank you!
Not that I noticed, I wasn't checking that religiously. However, I did check the day prior to receiving the invite and it was just the "your application is complete..." status. I don't think I ever got put on the "hold" status. Hopefully that helps a little.

It does help! Cuz my status has been saying that complete thing for about three weeks now..Good luck with the interview! 🙂

It's funny, I was actually checking my GW status AS I got my II email. The status still hadn't changed, I was a little bummed, but then I checked my email, and hello interview! After you get an II, the status changes to "an email has been sent to you regarding your status" or something like that. I'm going to guess that it also says that when it rejects people, given it's vague nature. I was also never put on hold to my knowledge.. I was checking every few days.

Best of wishes to everyone still hoping for an interview! Is anyone else going to be there Nov. 7?

I'll be there Nov. 7th! I'll see you there.

Got off hold and changed to the other status sometime in the last couple of days. Promising? Has anyone been on hold, gotten off, and then put back on? I feel like that would be so disappointing haha.

I can't say if it is bad or good, but GW's Facebook page did post this the other day...

"If you are a current applicant and in checking your status through the online application web portal, you notice that the status of your application is on hold for re-review, please do not be alarmed or think that something is out of place with your application. Being put on hold for re-review is a normal part of the review process. Remember that we engage in a rolling admissions policy and there is no set schedule for re-review of files and we will be interviewing through March. When any decision is made you will be contacted directly and interview invitations are sent via email. If you have any updates to your file, make sure to submit them using the web portal at https://jboss.gwumc.edu/AdmissionsOfficeWeb/."
