2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got the secondary invitation today. I got amcas verified back in Aug and they have probably had my app since early september. Why would it have taken so long to hear back from them and is it even worth it to fill out the secondary?

Probably not… unless you haven't heard from other schools and this is a top choice for you. Many of us have been on hold for forever and they get a lot of applications. 14,649 people applied last year, they accept 300 and 177ish matriculate. It might be a waste of money. But it might not be… who knows what goes through these Adcom minds?

Undoubtedly, you will withdraw/decline/forego your $180,000 scholorship acceptance to the University of Chicago for this acceptance to George Washington.

One never knows what good old GW has up the money sleeve. I may have to hang onto this acceptance until the financials come out - I'm not sure, I liked the school and the area a lot when I visited. I was also impressed with the 16 day turn around. Easily fastest yet.

Does anyone know when they start sending out rejections? Also do they re-review in any order?

I was just rejected by email. On hold since July 3.9/31 OOS. Good luck everyone!

Exact same early hold/just rejected here. Lower GPA and higher MCAT.

I almost don't mind, since it least it's SOME news... Thanks you, George Washington, for being the first medical school related e-mail in my inbox since late September!

Are the rejections pre-interview? or after you two have interviewed already?. Ive been on-hold for about a month now, getting worried!

Thanks for the response, good luck with other schools!
Thanks! Good luck to you as well. I have 7 interviews so it doesn't sting too badly but I really love DC and it's out of the question now, sadly.

7/22 and got put on hold early August. Sent a letter of update/interest over the weekend though, maybe that helped?

I just did that, got rejected today. I'm bummed out I won't get to visit. But! good luck to everyone applying here.

Just cancelled my interview due to an acceptance at a top choice school for me. Was scheduled for next friday, so hopefully one of you will take it. Good luck!

how do you know if you are on hold or rejected?

anyone know how many people came off the waitlist last year or in previous years?

how do you know if you are on hold or rejected?

If you are on hold your status on the status check page says something like, "your application has been reviewed and it's placed on hold for re-review at a later date etc."

If you are rejected you get an email telling you that you have been rejected.

Hold! complete ~9/14- not sure when the hold was put there.

I'm starting to get really nervous and anxious about my interview here. Can one of you guys who got accepted maybe give some tips or pointers on having a successful interview here? Anything in particular we should research or be fluent in? Anything you may have emphasized?

I haven't been accepted yet or anything, but I did interview here last week and seriously! Don't be nervous! The day is so casual and the interviewers (at least, the ones I had) are really nice. They didn't drill me on health care or question my answers, they just asked questions to get to know me and see why I wanted to go there!

I would say be well-versed on the track program, but honestly, since the interviews are in the afternoon, they spend the whole morning telling you about it so it's kind of hard to not have a hundred answers to "why GW" by the end of the day!

Thanks for the reply.

Thats good to know, and I will go back and review the track program and their MD program in general, although I read that the MD program for Aug 2014 is still being developed.

It is, and on my tour, the guides didn't even know what it would be like yet! So I wouldn't worry too much about it. All I know is that it will be more small group-focused.

Me too 🙂 I'm in love with the integrative medicine track!

Interview Invitation, 29 MCAT, Out of State, Over represented. This school is extremely attractive!

I just withdrew my application and declined my interview invite. Good luck to the rest of you guys!

Hi all, congrats to all those who got accepted and invites! I'm a second year student at GW and I might have interviewed several of you. I just want to come on to help all those who have questions regarding GW.
First of all, no you don't have to take your facebook down, unless you have really embarrassing pictures, but seriously, they don't check regardless of what others have told you.
I have received several question regarding the waitlist, the thing is, most of the update letters and letters of intent don't get read at all because the admissions office receive so many, and if you have met dean McQuail at the interview, you know how busy she is... so my point is you can send them in, but I think if you're waitlisted at several schools then you should focus on writing letters to other schools if you know these letters are actually being read. And sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at this point, it doesn't look like the waitlist will be moving much this year...
Also one thing that may not be mentioned at all during your interview is the licence problem GW had several years ago, it's coming back to haunt us once again. how do I know this? let's just say a little bird in the committee who happens to be a close friend of mine told me. So be warned. Of course, GW is keeping it in the low or else people be freaking out, hence I don't tell this to my classmates or else they go berserk, but I think this is something applicants NEED to know because this concerns your future. They will assure you that everything is fine when you ask them, and that's because most students and staffs at admissions don't know about the issue (besides the people higher up) or even if they do they don't want to tell you because they think it's gonna work out, which is possible, but if you're accepted at another school, I say why risk it? I'm not saying GW is a bad school, by no means, and I get a lot of "I want to go here because DC is nice". But to be completely honest, some of friends at Georgetown seem to be having a much better time, and it looks like they're integrating their new program there better than GW (you have learned about or will learn about the new program at your interview). And taking everything into account at this point, I'd say if your main reason is to be in DC, Georgetown is the better choice.
I'm not trying to bash GW, I'm simply trying to tell you guys what I think as a student here and what I have learned recently. It is of utmost importance that you can make an informed decision because you're going to spend the next 4 years at the medical school of your choice. I think the GW website and interview give you a good sense of what the school is like and present the best aspects of the school, and that's what I based my decision on when I chose to come here. But in the end it's about the execution of all of these great ideas that are proposed and presented, and personally, I think GW does a decent job, not great. If I knew of a lot of these issues beforehand, I would not have come here even with the promises of the track program and collaborative learning opportunities because I think they're execute very poorly. And given many of their problems as of late that I won't mention (you can pm me if you want), as a student here, I just can't fully recommend GW to you at this stage of the game.
let me know if you have any questions.
good luck

Around what time were you complete?
Around the end of August....Been on hold since October so not sure of my chances. Also, does anyone know the average wait time of being on hold before your file is reviewed a second time?

that is such a bummer! when I looked into GW I was super ecstatic about it :/ we'll see how it goes but its still one of my top schools even if

Sorry to be skeptical, but this seems kind of troll-ish without more specifics. Is there any way you could elaborate on how that accredation issue from 2008-2010 is coming back to haunt GW? Again, I mean no disrespect, but GW is my only acceptance so far so I'm trying to be cautious if possible!

Go ahead George Washington, make his day.

Yeah. The picture basically entails that quote 🙂. I was completely stunned, but feel incredibly lucky and humbled, particularly the fact they have approximately 14,000 applicants. Yes, 29 was my composite score. I was complete mid-September.

Accreditation lasts eight years...

Has anyone had trouble with GWU receiving their letters of recommendation? Every other school I applied to got my letters but GWU. They told me to call AMCAS and AMCAS says they sent them.

How would anyone know this early on that there will be no waitlist movement? Only half of interviews have been conducted at this point.
Considering that GWU tells students to update their secondary application, I highly doubt no one is reading these updates/letters.
