2013-2014 George Washington University Application Thread

Hi all, congrats to all those who got accepted and invites! I'm a second year student at GW and I might have interviewed several of you. I just want to come on to help all those who have questions regarding GW.
First of all, no you don't have to take your facebook down, unless you have really embarrassing pictures, but seriously, they don't check regardless of what others have told you.
I have received several question regarding the waitlist, the thing is, most of the update letters and letters of intent don't get read at all because the admissions office receive so many, and if you have met dean McQuail at the interview, you know how busy she is... so my point is you can send them in, but I think if you're waitlisted at several schools then you should focus on writing letters to other schools if you know these letters are actually being read. And sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at this point, it doesn't look like the waitlist will be moving much this year...
Also one thing that may not be mentioned at all during your interview is the licence problem GW had several years ago, it's coming back to haunt us once again. how do I know this? let's just say a little bird in the committee who happens to be a close friend of mine told me. So be warned. Of course, GW is keeping it in the low or else people be freaking out, hence I don't tell this to my classmates or else they go berserk, but I think this is something applicants NEED to know because this concerns your future. They will assure you that everything is fine when you ask them, and that's because most students and staffs at admissions don't know about the issue (besides the people higher up) or even if they do they don't want to tell you because they think it's gonna work out, which is possible, but if you're accepted at another school, I say why risk it? I'm not saying GW is a bad school, by no means, and I get a lot of "I want to go here because DC is nice". But to be completely honest, some of friends at Georgetown seem to be having a much better time, and it looks like they're integrating their new program there better than GW (you have learned about or will learn about the new program at your interview). And taking everything into account at this point, I'd say if your main reason is to be in DC, Georgetown is the better choice.
I'm not trying to bash GW, I'm simply trying to tell you guys what I think as a student here and what I have learned recently. It is of utmost importance that you can make an informed decision because you're going to spend the next 4 years at the medical school of your choice. I think the GW website and interview give you a good sense of what the school is like and present the best aspects of the school, and that's what I based my decision on when I chose to come here. But in the end it's about the execution of all of these great ideas that are proposed and presented, and personally, I think GW does a decent job, not great. If I knew of a lot of these issues beforehand, I would not have come here even with the promises of the track program and collaborative learning opportunities because I think they're execute very poorly. And given many of their problems as of late that I won't mention (you can pm me if you want), as a student here, I just can't fully recommend GW to you at this stage of the game.
let me know if you have any questions.
good luck
Lmfao. Thanks?

The interview day is totally straightforward, no big surprises - it starts with some presentations by Dean McQuail, tours of the school and hospital, lunch/Q&A with med students (some of whom also might be your student interviewer), then two interviews. No curveball questions or anything weird. Be as calm as you can, and make sure to re-read your GWU secondary essays the night before; the content will very likely help you on interview day. Good luck!

Going to release my December interview, hope it goes to someone who needs it!

Thanks! Since the interviewers gavent read your file prior to the interview, did you just give them a "tell me about yourself" quick overview?

Yup, that's how they start the interview!

Indeed. This reminds me of a quote I once read:
"Do not believe everything you read on the Internet"- Abraham Lincoln

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe that quote is usually attributed to Attila the Hun...

😀

I finished my secondary october 1st and i was verified october 10th and i literally havent heard anything back from them since...should i be worried?

Not at all! October is on the later side and GW gets SO many applications. Plus, they are good about putting people on hold/rejecting them as they get to their file. So they probably just haven't gotten to you yet!

Has GW sent out any rejections yet or have they only placed people on hold?

Just withdrew from my early December interview, would have loved to visit DC again but this process is getting costly.

Good luck to everyone waiting for interviews!

Sorry to be skeptical, but this seems kind of troll-ish without more specifics. Is there any way you could elaborate on how that accredation issue from 2008-2010 is coming back to haunt GW? Again, I mean no disrespect, but GW is my only acceptance so far so I'm trying to be cautious if possible!

Please Don't be naive. This is a troll. Look at the spelling- a minimum requirement upon entering medical school is proper grammar and adequate writing skills.

May be a troll, may not be. In 2009, GWU was in some trouble for having rotten cadavers and was at risk of losing their accreditation. The cadavers were improperly fixed. It was a big deal and I assume the aforementioned post was regarding this issue. Whether or not the poster is a current student or someone trolling to stir up controversy and prevent people from matriculating here is another matter.

And here's an article from Georgetown about the issues. I'm sure there are others if you search a little bit. They do have corrections at the bottom of the article due to "misleading" phrases in the article but the point is GWU was put on probation. http://www.thehoya.com/violations-build-at-gw-med-1.1894567#.Uop0BCdi3m0

This article is better. There were problems that went way beyond the cadavers: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/...dical-school-stock-options-academic-probation

Don't get me wrong, I like GW. I applied here, but there are things that people should be aware of.

Very excited for GW.

Does anyone know the average wait time from being on hold to hearing of news- either rejection or II? At this point how many more interviews are they going to offer?

Hello all- anyone from late October/early November hear anything yet?

I interviewed in early November and they told us that we wouldn't hear until January! Not sure about late October though.

I interviewed Oct. 24th and got accepted last week! I was pretty surprised (and pumped) because they said we wouldn't hear back until January. Best of luck!

Were there ever any complete application emails sent out?

I only received a payment confirmation email.

Received II two days ago for interview in late Jan, complete mid-September 🙂 32 / 3.7 cGPA / OOS

Congrats!

Did you send an update or anything? Were you ever On Hold?

Hey wannabe,

Nope! No update sent, and I was never placed on any hold. Just the good old fashioned submit application and cross the fingers.

Im trying to get a sense of how often GW holds interviews.. When is the soonest ii date coming up for some of you guys?

Anyone know how many people get wait listed (vs rejected post-interview) each cycle? I've heard that there tends to be a lot of movement off the wait list here, but just trying to figure out the actual odds.

Not sure if this helps, but my boyfriend got an interview in early November and his interview date is in January.

Alternate list =\ Interviewed early November. Does anyone know if they rank their alternate list?

Same here, very disappointing. They interview so many students that the alternate list must be very long. If the list is ranked, I doubt they are going to tell us.

I'm not sure, but I think they interview close to 1000 students, more than most other schools

Interview Invite today! YAYYY 😀

Complete 9/30, II 12/5, Interview 1/7

Were you ever placed on "re-review later" or were you invited straight from your complete status?

"On hold for re-review". Damn. Not surprised though with my 30 MCAT. Goes to show how much that exam really matters.

I received an interview ~4 months after I submitted my Secondary app and ~3 months after I was verified. I was on 'hold for re-review' for 3 months before I got an interview. Try not to stress to much about this status. Also, it is important to keep in mind that numbers (GPA and MCAT) definitely do not tell the whole story of your application. Goodluck.
