2013-2014 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm currently writing my letter right now and was wondering if you said something about going to the medical school for sure if accepted?

Also, does anyone know if I should send my letter as soon as possible or should I wait until winter break is over since I'm not sure if they will look over the letters during the break?

No, I didn't send a letter of intent, just interest. I'm sure if you're positive you'd attend that would be more compelling, however.

Does anyone's status page say:

Deadline has passed

"Thanks for your interest in Georgetown University School of Medicine. Unfortunately, our application deadline has passed. If you are interested to apply for the next academic year, please check our website for information."

Also I called the admission office today and they said that I should call back later and that a decision should have been reached by now considering that I was complete in October.

Do these points of information mean I was rejected? does someone else have the same status?

Kind of concerned because this is my top choice 🙁

Mine says that as well even though I was given an II a couple of months ago and will be interviewing later this month.

My status page also says "deadline has passed" and I interviewed at Georgetown in mid-December.

does gtown do silent rejections pre interview? I was complete on 10/10 and have not heard a word....

I called before break and was told that they will let you know if you are ultimately rejected, not sure if anyone on here has had that experience. Still waiting to hear back, love DC

I was complete on 10/17 and have not heard anything. On the GU SoM Post-Submission Updates page of my Secondary Application it says Interview. Does everyone have this on theirs? Not sure if it means that I have an II or not. It says they take 6-10 weeks to give a decision and it will be 12 weeks this Thursday....

Mine also says this…I don't remember if it said it before. Don't want to get ahead of myself

Nope, definitely not. Was complete mid-July, rejected pre-interview early October. You'll hear from them if they don't want to interview you (twas fine with me--glad they weren't stringing me along...I have interviews & acceptances elsewhere, anyway).

It says that as soon as you submit, I know because I submitted fairly late and included an update of what I had been up to over the summer/fall that wasn't on my AMCAS.

Got axed today, pre-interview! Completed 11/05. Not surprised tho. Good luck to everyone else. :luck:

Does any one know if they send a wave of rejections and IIs at the same time

Rejected pre-interview today as well. Complete 10/17. Having an acceptance makes this sting much less though. Good luck to all who attend Georgetown next year!

hey guys im looking to book a hotel for an interview next month. im sure its been discussed already but can anyone tell me which hotel is closest to the med school? im trying to make it easy for the morning.

Joining the rejection party!... Was also complete 11/5. 32 3.6, OOS. Good luck everyone!

I just stayed at the Georgetown hotel (and conference center I think it's called). Idk if I'd recommend it because it was pricey (~200 including taxes) but it was less then a 5 minute walk to the med school and the bed was very comfortable.

Got call at 9:30 last night (D.C. time; 8:30 in MO) from the med school Dean notifying me of my acceptance. Email this morning says to check my status online where the official "congrats" letter is posted.

Congrats! When did you interview?

Just a quick question: I know that GT has actual grades, but are students graded on a curve?

So just to clarify...they don't do silent rejections right? And if they reject you, it's by email and not like some status change?

I've been complete since 10/29....3.65/32, nothing yet =/

Is this a "no news is good news" school?

You are correct. But they send IIs pretty far in advance and I'm not sure when they stop interviewing.

It's strange. I got an II in mid october and the earliest date was mid January, basically 3 months out, so I thought they booked them months in advance. But then my friend got an II in december and there were several spots open for not too longer after my date so she booked it for late January, only about a month between her II and interview date.

Pretty sure it's a curve, sorry.
Ugh.. I got accepted there but the curved grading system is a real issue for me. I may have to revisit my other options cause I cannot imagine that this does not contribute to an unhealthy environment. 🙁

Are all interviews cancelled today, 01/21/14, due to school closure from the weather?

I was also highly concerned about the grading system and spoke to current students and they felt that Georgetown gets an unfair rep for being competitive because of this. During an interview at a P/F school, a faculty member mentioned that he didn't really love P/F grading because it builds a lot of extra stress into your STEP 1 scores. And a preceptor mentioned that when residents interview, the residency program is usually given a distribution of how the student did within each course, so even if it's graded P/F, you still see where they fell on the curve. I was also really set against curved grading but have personal reasons for wanting to stay in the D.C. area so I'm trying to get used to the idea. It's definitely not ideal but if you're not trying to match into a ridiculous specialty it may not be as horrendous as we've been led to believe.

Is that where you are going? I have also gotten into GW so even if I was to stay in DC I have options. I don't think I'm interested in super competitive specialties at the moment, but I do appreciate the option to change my mind once I'm in school. The thing is that I really don't mind the grading system itself, but what bothers me is that if the whole class scores above 90%, I could be considered a low pass (or fail?) with a 91% under the curve system. I don't know.. maybe I'm overthinking it..

I had a really off-putting interview at GW so I ended up withdrawing but if I recall they have H/P/F with no curve? The curve is definitely outdated and does not naturally lend itself to a collaborative environment, so I can see why med schools have largely evolved away from it. I'm hoping that second look will clarify situations like the above, as obviously achieving 90% should demonstrate proficiency regardless of class performance. Perhaps current students could weigh in.

Found this old post on the grading system... Keep in mind it's from 2008 but I doubt that they made it a MORE difficult curve from then:

"The grading system isn't too bad. Top 10% get Honors, the next 20% get high Pass, and essentially, 60-70% of the class gets a pass (a few people fail some tests though). The "Low pass" is reserved for the bottom 5-10% of the class, but this is an INTERNAL/INSTITUTIONAL designation- i.e. residencies will see "Pass." The only reason "LP" is given is so the student is given a wake up call.. (you are close to failing). If you get multiple LP's and you are struggling, the school tries to help you (you meet with advisors/counselors, etc). So essentially its top 30% of the class gets distinction (H/HP), the rest get pass.

A few years ago there was a poll administered by the Student Medical Education Committee about whether students preferred the current grading system, or would rather have Pass/Fail. Surprisingly, most people voted to keep the current grading criteria! If I remember correctly, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years had over 60% voting in favor of grades, while 1st years were deadlocked at 50-50. It seems that the people who get high passes and honors want to keep the system intact, while the people who get all passes want to do away with it.. For this reason it has not changed and probably won't in the near future.

Don't worry guys, its really not that bad. There will be some gunners but honestly, undergrad was WAY worse in terms of competitive nature!"

It actually doesn't sound that bad as long as I don't have ambitions for derm or ortho surgery 🙂 I'm feeling quite okay to be swimming in the same pool with 60-70% of the class as long as I manage to maintain a 'school-life' balance. I may very likely see you at GT next fall! The cycle is slowing down and the school remains my front-runner thus far.

For those interviewed, did any of you bring a guest? I'm coming to D.C. with my dad since I'm not from the area and I'm sure he'll be interested in seeing the school too (since he'll be funding me if I get in lol).

Also, just want to confirm whether we need to bring a hard-copy of our photo... Or do we just upload it on the website?

Thanks!

You don't need a hard-copy photo of yourself. You just have to upload the photo online if you haven't done so already.

Also, I want to just confirm that your father just wants to explore on his own while you're attending the interview day events, correct?

when we submitted the secondary i know we were forced to upload a photo then by the website, do we need to upload anything new as far as a photo goes?

He wanted to attend the information sessions, though I'm sure if he's not allowed he'll still be okay with it. I was just wondering if it is uncommon for interviewwees to bring a guest with them during the events.

I would strongly advise against it. You talk with students in the morning and it may make both the current students and fellow interviewees uncomfortable. Additionally, Mrs. Sullivan's talk is about 1.5-2 hours long and she asks a few questions to the interviewees which again may be awkward with him there, no matter how cool he is lol.

Even though my parents are footing the bill for my interviews, for which I am very grateful, having your parent there may send the wrong vibe to a med school since you may come across as less independent than your peers, even though that's probably not true.

If you get in, I'm sure at that point, your father could come and check out the school again during second look. But at this time, I wouldn't recommend having him join you at the interview day events.

Anyways, good luck!! The day is pretty low stress, all the students I met were really nice and 2 MS1's from the morning invited me to have a drink with them after my interview but I had to catch a flight. Maybe your dad can take everyone out for drinks after!

It's a professional interview. Would you bring your dad to an interview at Google or Goldman Sachs? Ms. Sullivan would call you out for sure.

Do not have your father attend. (No offense intended) but it would make you seem childish. It would also imply that your parents were making you attend medical school or something like that which does happen to a lot of students. And when your interviewer asks why you want to become a physician he will get the message that it is because your parents want you to.

Georgetown is a great area and if your father wants to come to DC he could look at the undergrad campus which is essentially next door. He could even check nearby areas for housing options.

Anyway good luck!

Thanks for the response! Wow I had no idea they consider things like this in med school interviews. Last year my brother had an interview for optometry school and they actually invited parents and family to attend so they could learn more about the school. I guess I shouldn't have assumed that all professional school interviews were like this, thanks for the heads up.

That's what a second look day is for. If accepted, they'll likely welcome your family to attend.

Quick question for those of you admitted- has any of you been asked to submit the initial deposit yet? In the acceptance email they said it would be requested in January, so I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
