2013-2014 Howard University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all,

I submitted my AMCAS application and have been verified for the past month or so. I'm scheduled to take the Sept 11th MCAT. I submitted my primary app last week Friday. Will I receive a link to the secondary application BEFORE or AFTER my MCAT score is released? Thanks!

We can leave number 11 blank right? "Please provide below any additional information you believe is important in evaluating your application (e/g/. additional coursework, problems with academic record; disadvantaged, etc." I really do not feel like I have anything to add.

I left it blank 👍

Anyone?? 🙁

Hey! Idunno...some schools do before verification, some schools do after. Howard didn't release their secondary til August 19th so I couldn't tell you cause I was verified a month before that. Either way, we can post you the prompts here and you can pre-write.

Prompts:

Have you lived (for three years or more) in communities which are medically underserved, or where the majority of the population is economically and/or educationally disadvantaged? (800 words)

After residency, do you plan to practice medicine in an underserved or disadvantaged community? (800 words)

Have you worked (volunteer or paid employment) with medically underserved, economically disadvantaged and/or educationally disadvantaged populations? (800 words)

Please provide below any additional information you believe is important in evaluating your application (e/g/. additional coursework, problems with academic record; disadvantaged, etc. (800 words)

What are you currently doing or what do you plan to do in the next 9-12 months? (provide brief description - gives options for working in biomedical or clinical research, medical related field, or outside of medicine).

Then you just have to fill in current courses you are taking if you are still in school and input your course pre-reqs.

I pre-wrote off of last year's prompts so this should be a good help, even if you don't get the secondary until you're verified. 👍

Thanks a lot! 😀 This is going to be extremely helpful! Oh btw, just to clarify- my AMCAs application has been verified (since July), but I just submitted my application to Howard last week. It was my understanding that once your AMCAs is verified, med schools would automatically receive your application and send you the secondary. I'm just surprised it's taking me so long to receive the secondary app, since it has already been released, you know? When you sent your AMCAs to Howard, how long did it take them to send you a confirmation email or the secondary link? Thanks again!

Every school is different. Some have a good system that will auto-send it and others someone has to go in manually and send em to people. I got my first correspondence from Howard on August 5th, just saying that the secondary would be released in 2 weeks on the 19th...I was verified on July 16th so that was a solid ~3 weeks with 0 contact. I bet they will contact you within the next week or so. They don't screen, I don't believe, so you should be fine. And if you pre-write you'll be able to submit it as soon as you get it.

I was verified on a Friday in late Aug, received the secondary the following Monday, so probably before.

Did they email you back yet?

Not yet, I am not able to attend the dates they gave me, Oct 1 or Oct 2, because I have my Meharry interview on Sept 30 so I emailed them requesting more dates to select from.

EDIT: Oops I should have read the secondary email carefully... they answered my AP question. Silly me!

For the question about retaking the mcat, I plan on doing so if I don't get in this round, but I don't know what month that would be. Should I just put a random date or just click "no"? Thanks for answering my dumb questions, haha 😀

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone, I have a course requirements question - do they accept AP credit? Like for Biology I with a lab, I took the AP test and placed out. For biology II with a lab, I put in my anatomy course; this counts right?

Anyone know if all our LOR have to be in before we are considered for an interview? TIA and best of luck to all 🙂

Hey everyone,

do you think I should explain my low score on verbal in the secondary?

App Submitted Application submitted on 9/19/2013.
Fee Paid Status 9/19/2013 1:05:51 AM - $75.00
App Complete Your application is ready!
Interview Not scheduled yet.

My MCAT score became available on sept 12, thus they sent me an invitation to complete the secondary on the 17th..

24mcat (best combo of scores bs-10, vr-9, ps-8) 3.54gpa not a traditional URM but considered a minority in another sense, and plenty of volunteering with underserved populations.

anyone think I have a shot?

I think you have a shot! We have similar stats. I say go for it because you definitely have the experience with underserved populations, which is one of their emphasis. the only thing that may be working against you is the late application.

I really appreciate the kind words 🙂 Yeah, I know I was late... I submitted july 10 but wasn't verified for almost 8 weeks after... and my mcat came out late. Anyway, I really hope you're right. I keep hearing things about how I shouldnt bother applying unless I'm a traditional URM. I hope I have a chhaannnceeee, would love to go to howard.

oh! i thought you meant you sent in your primary on the 19th. my bad lol that would make no sense! well, in that case I'm behind you because I'm still working on my secondary :S

just to keep my question alive: should I explain my low verbal score in my secondary?

If it was way below avg and you have a valid reason I would. If they are curious about it they will probably bring it up in interview anyways.

okay thanks! i guess i should just leave it out then since they will ask anyways.

Hi everyone!

It was great meeting everyone today! There were about 10 of us in the meeting room adjacent to the admissions office. We were given interviews according to our arrival time. Interviews times range from 9:45 am to approximately 1:00 pm (during lunch time). I enjoyed lunch today (whoever the cook is, those chicken wings were tasty!).

A very relaxed, stress-free atmosphere in Howard. The MS2s seem to know there class as well as the MS1s, MS3-4s, etc. -- a very close-knit, family atmosphere. Everyone had one interview (though interview times will vary). The interviews were also stress-free (well, relatively, as the act of interviewing for medical school is stressful in itself).

Outing myself, but taking the midnight train (literally) to Georgia. Again, it was nice meeting you all! :hello:

Congrats to all of those who have received interview invites already. Im a 3rd year student here at HUCM. PM me if you have any question about the school and the application process.

I wish you all the best of luck and I hope to see you guys next fall👍👍

Hey everyone! Congrats to all of you who have received interview invites. You will have a great day when you get here. Just relax and be yourself! If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

My mcat is a 27 VR 10 PS 9 BS 8.My best section scores VR 11 PS 9 BS 8. I have a 3.28 gpa and a 3.4 sgpa. Really hope I get an II the school sounds amazing!

if you did articulate this life experience of yours in your secondary app I'm almost certain that you will do just fine. Howard doesn't look at the numbers only. They look at your app as a whole (at least this is what I heard from a friend who goes there). Good luck!

Thinking about pushing back my interview date again, worry it will me look like I am not interested.

I just want to see my meharry decision before then go, funds are extremely low at the moment.

I would chose Meharry before Howard, I know Howard a great institute but I just prefer living in the South.

Any female want to share a room with me at the Sheraton of silver springs.

Also I am thinking about staying at the silver springs Travelodge but after my first two encounters with Priceline motels I am thinking about not doing it.
