2013-2014 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There were actually a decent bit of people at Second Look that still aren't on the page. They definitely said they over-accepted from their 100. Like Plastics said though, probably not much hope for second tier and beyond but there will be some movement!

Unfortunately they have decided to keep class size 100. There is hope tho. Because we are a relatively new school, a lot of people choose to go elsewhere. I personally know 40 people who are for sure going. There has only been 95 people added to the official FB page, which the school is the one who created the page, so all students are asked by administration to join (so people are more inclined to) . If I had to guess, I would say at least 100 people are coming off the WL in order to fill ~40 (since many have already got in somewhere and will prob decline the offer when it comes in May) . But that's just my guess. Best of luck 🙂

I'm kind of asking this on behalf of all my fellow waitlistees- do you "personally" know these 40 people who are attending because you met them on 2nd look day?

And I must add, our second look was 3 days long. We actually got I hang out ALOT. 🙂

Yeah, In 3 days we met a lot of our future classmates. Don't get me wrong though, there were definitely a fair number of people still deciding between schools.

Yeah, I figured you guys might have met these 40 people at Second Look considering that most people likely don't personally know 40 MD's or MD candidates lol. In any case, looking forward to joining you guys soon!!

MS1 here.

All you waitlisters, do not lose hope! I was on the top tier WL this time last year. Then in late May they decided to take me, and not only that, they offered me a huge scholarship.

You never know how the Adcom people think of you. You never know where you're gonna end up in this crazy game until the last minute. You may start doubting your capabilities. Am I a loser? Am I not good enough? Am I never gonna be a doctor? Or am I just plain stupid?

Hey listen, you're none of these, because you've gotten so far in this game! You had to beat 80% of your competitors just to be on this craved waitlist. Compared to you being able to achieve your dream in the near future, a little waiting might be a little itchy, a little painful even, but you've spent the last 4+ years preparing for this, so hold on for a few more weeks!!

Any updates/acceptances/withdrawals lately? This waiting is excruciating...I try not to go on sdn but I'm on a computer all day for work haha

Withdrew my acceptance, I hope one of you gets it!

Hi, I was hoping some current students could answer a couple quick questions. I'm really torn between two programs right now (yes, still...) and would really appreciate it, 🙂.

1. How often are exams during first and second year? Once a week? Once a month? How does that contribute to stress?

2. Is there internal ranking? How does that, plus the honors/pass/fail grading scheme, contribute to stress? Do most people strive to honor exams/courses? How difficult is honoring? What are the criteria? Is there a grade that is automatically honors or does only a certain percentage of the class honor? (Also, please correct me if I'm wrong about honors in the first two years; the website seems to suggest this, but I thought that I heard otherwise during the Second Look presentation.)

I know there are a bunch of little questions there but I'd definitely be more than grateful for some answers, 🙂.

1. During the first semester you typically get (the school likes changing things every year and I don't know exactly what they have in store) 2 exams per each BFCP course (with weekly online quizzes and TBLs factoring into your grade as well depending on the course) and some final exams for your longitudinal courses although sometimes those may come as a project or a paper (again the course directors have seemingly changed these every year), and anatomy practicals for the AFCP course. When you hit organ systems you typically have 1 final for the organ system (some have a mid-term and an anatomy practical). Capstone typically has random checkpoint assignments monthly.

2. The school claims there is no internal ranking (but they have to have some mode of ranking when it comes to your residency letter). As far as stress, if you are a person who is stressed out you will be stressed out no matter what, if you are a chill person then you will be chill. Your level of stress is not a result of the medical school you go to. That being said, if you are not good at multitasking and being conscious of impending assignments in all of your different classes (upcoming TBLs, reflection papers, Capstone checkpoints, OSCEs, etc) then you will probably be more stressed at a school like OUWB although many schools have a similar structure with multiple classes going on at the same time. I would say there is a good spread between people attempting to honor and people who are just looking to pass with most attempting for honors (depending on the internal competitiveness of the individual and the specialty that interests them). Honoring is typically a 90% with some classes including an attendance criteria and other criteria. We have had classes where a lot of people honor and other classes where very few honor. Every class has been fair in my opinion. There is no competitive environment at this school, students are always sharing study guides with each other and looking to help each other out as much as possible. Very few people are snobby about grades even though everyone is geared toward success.

I would strongly recommend researching what residency programs are looking for, I know the AMA has some great resources. 1st and 2nd year grades are typically not as high of a priority as 3rd year grades, board scores, and research.

I hope I was able to answer your questions. Again, many things are subject to change for the incoming class.

My advice: Your first 2 years is only one aspect of your medical education and the material and textbooks are the same from school to school; in my opinion third and fourth year are where you really get differences in medical education.

Has anyone heard anything more about scholarships recently? They said they had a meeting April 23, but I haven't heard anyone say anything about it.

The OUWB Admissions twitter said they are making more scholarship awards (i.e. calling people) today.

I got a call too with a very generous scholarship offer. Does anyone know the average Step 1 score for Oakland from 2013?

They said during my interview that it was right around the national average. It's hard to compare because no school actually publishes that kind of stuff. The national average is likely in the 220-230 range.

Did you get any sort of follow-up email or update in your student portal confirming the scholarship? I haven't.

Hope is diminishing very quickly at this point. Too bad, I would've loved to go here but I guess it's just not meant to be!

Don't loose hope sweety! They are adding new people everyday to the FB page! Only this past two week, about 10 people joined us. There has been a decent movement. So keep your hope alive 🙂 u never know.

From what I heard an M3 student say, the national average in 2013 was a 227-228 and he said the school told them they were only a few points off (225-226)

Good to know. And they had 98% pass on the first try. Inaugural class was only 50 people, so that's only 1 person who didn't. The curriculum has been tweaked quite a bit since then too.

So as an FYI for people, I called Oakland yesterday and asked them about their waitlist movement. They told me that there were about 40 people left on the first tier waiting list, and that typically the third week of June is when things have more or less settled in terms of accepting people off the waiting list.

I'm still on the WL and hoping to get in, so have hope others who are in the same boat.

Question for current OUWB students: I was wondering if classroom attendance is mandatory? I heard the first 2 years it was mandatory, but last year they made classes not mandatory? Thank you 🙂

There will be some attendance policy, they are still working it out though. Last I heard attendance may just be required for people wanting to get honors. But, I am not sure what the final policy will be.

From what I understand, preclinical honors grades mean very little, so that wouldn't be bad at all.

Has anyone heard anything this week from the first tier? Does anyone know how many people are currently in the Facebook group or how many spots they're trying to fill?

AHHH this is my DREAM school. Can some of you who got accepted share stats. I am applying next cycle 🙂

3.8/32

School isn't very stat-seeking. Definitely a more holistic process.

REALLY. omg.
that just made my day. I mean I know on their site they say min 3.0 and 24 MCAT but obviously others have AMAZING stats so I am just worried I won't even make the first cut with mine =/.

But thanks 😀

Look at their website for an idea of the average GPA/MCAT per class.

2015 - 3.67/31
2016 - 3.65/31
2017 - 3.63/30

Has anyone heard any recent updates?

I am sure they are extremely close to having the Class of 2018 set. Just wondering if anyone has an idea of how many more spots might still be available and how many more students on still on tier 1.
There are 83 in our unoffical facebook group (those who said they committed) but im assuming some havent joined and some dont have facebook. Im assuming there might be 1-3 spots available from last minute drops but I dont have an exact count obviously.

94 in the official group, for reference.

Just got accepted today off waitlist! Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hi you guys - I'm applying to OU this cycle and have my interview this month. Would anyone mind sharing their interview experience? 😀

I don't know exactly what you want to know, but it was fantastic. I did not know much about the school originally and it quickly rose to the top of my list. Everyone is super nice and it is a very relaxed day. Dean Folberg is the man. Thats about it! But in all seriousness if you have any specific questions let me know.

Take a look at my post in last years thread if you're interested ; )
Although I did not end up going here due to personal reasons it was my number one choice! And I got into some nice places. They make you feel like a rare gem such a fun day, enjoy!

FYI they offered me a $100,000 scholarship and I was a pretty avg applicant so if out of state applicants are worried about cost, don't be

when is the timeline to when they gave you that offer? is it after you file for FAFSA and that other website (whose name is slipping out of my mind at the moment).
Thanks!

After you file the FAFSA. They are awarded on a rolling basis. Some people even get offers up until the week or two before school starts.

Yup it was after FAFSA. I want to say march?

I know that the median Mcat score is a 30 and a minimum is a 24 and i have a 28 but i would be able to get in with a 6 in a verbal? i know its terrible and will most likely have to write the new one (which then i would take a fifth year and apply next year). but is there any chance of getting in with 11 PS 6 VR 11 BS with around 3.6 GPA?
PS. I am a resident of michigan
