2013-2014 Rush Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you know if the committee meets at certain days during the month? My interview is scheduled for 12/11, that seems a reasonable enough time before the 1/10 date for a response, I would hate to have to wait 3 months...

I don't think they told us how frequently the adcom meets... hopefully not three months for you!! I feel like they'll tell you at your interview date which date you'll be notified on.

Two tours? Of what? Also, are the interviews in the am or pm or are the interviewees split into groups for different time slots? How many people per interview day are there, generally? And how long will I have to wait (in agony) for an admissions decision after attending the interview? I'm too excited for this one (and it's 2 months away)! Yay! 😀

All but two of the people in my interview batch had AM interviews, and that was mostly due to the availability of the person conducting the interview. I interviewed 3rd week of Feb and received a notification around 3/14, so there is ample time between your interview and 1/10, but they will tell you explicitly.

When I interviewed early October, one tour was of the clinical facilities (Rush/Stroger), and one was of the Academic facilities (On my day, there were about 20 interviewees). As far as the interview schedule goes, I had mine back to back in almost first thing in the morning, but there were some that had one before and one after lunch.

Rush is doing an interesting process this year where the admissions committee is only sending out decisions on four specific dates. The first of these is this coming Friday (11/15), then 1/10, 3/14, and 4/11. So I'd assume that if you interview reasonably before one of those dates, the next one is when you'd hear a status update. It's actually kind of nice to not be preoccupied with racing to my computer everytime I hear a mail ding!
So my interview is 1/08 and I'll probably hear on 3/14. Which is kind of stressful because that'll give me one day to decide where I want to go (if I get in, that is). Ahhh!!

You don't have to decide until May 15th, no? So you should have more than one day, unless you have other reasons to decide by March 15th. Also, congrats on the II, I'm crossing my fingers for one!

Ha! Yes that's correct. I made an error and mixed up March and May. Thank goodness I'll have time so I don't make such mistakes when picking a school! 😀

today would mark the 6 week point after the first interview. guess the first round of decisions should be coming out soon 😱

best of luck to all who interviewed and those still awaiting interviews

Yep. The decisions will be emailed on November 15th.

So I see some discrepancies from the 2012-2013 data from MSAR and Rush's website.

According to MSAR:
AMCAS Applications Received 7701

Number of Interviews 372
Illinois Resident 202
Out-of-State Resident 170

Number of 2012-2013 Matriculants 128

According to Rush's website:

AMCAS Applications Received 7670

Completed Applications 4633
Number of Interviews 382

Illinois Resident 163
Out-of-State Resident 219

Number of 2012-2013 Matriculants 128
Female 58
Male 70

I am tempted to believe the official Rush website more but... this doesn't seem right.

Also GOOD LUCK to everyone tomorrow!!! Hopefully good news will be spread 🙂

During my interview they said something along the lines of 9,000 applications submitted (I'm assuming primaries) and over 6,000 completed apps. 425 of which were interviewed and 250 of the interviewees are offered acceptances.

Pre-interview. I started a new clinical experience and have new coursework since submitting my supplementary.

They do not. Sorry. (I do not believe this has changed.)

They only accept updates from people on the WL (this is iffy though... one year WLers were asked and I do not think they were last year).

WHEN ARE THEY EMAILING PEOPLE I'M DYING IN AGONY

It's like waiting for MCAT scores all over again

That's disappointing. I got my gap year full-time job over 1.5 months after my AMCAS app was sent to schools (ie, got it in early August) and didn't really start doing productive things/truly understand what I was doing until the end of September.

I was going to send an update letter to Rush in October, along with letters to other schools (which I did send)...but I waited on my letter to Rush, thinking I'd heard something like this.

I hate that they probably assume I'm being unproductive in my gap year. :/ All of my other schools accepted my update letter. And it sucks considering I feel this job has really been beneficial and adds a lot to my app...

Accepted! Interviewed 10/8 or 10/9 (can't remember).

Aw congrats guys! Did anyone not get an email? I interviewed in October, 20 something...they told our day we'd hear back today but nothing so far. :\

Accepted! So blessed and honored. Congrats to all others, and GL to those still waiting! Interviewed 10/2. OOS, 3.7+/33

Ever been to a place and felt an instant and deep connection? I hadn't until I visited Rush. Got a similar vibe at Jefferson too though.

Rush just resonated with me and I left thinking "These are my people and this is were I need to be."

Accepted just a few minutes ago! So excited and Rush is most definitely one of my top choices. Interviewed on 10/23. OOS. Best of luck to those still in the running! And for those who were accepted, I'll be looking forward to meeting all of you next year.

Accepted! Interviewed 10/30. Feel so lucky. Great school!

Boooom. That is what we go for!

Congrats to all those accepted!

M2 here and even with Step 1 stress, still happy to be at Rush.

There is a Second Look Day at some point so you can meet future classmates or learn more to help make a decision.

Darn sdn double post

Can those of you who interviewed describe your interview experiences please 🙂 And any general advice? Did you get quizzed on your research in depth?

Two half-hour, morning interviews (one blind with a copy of your personal statement and one open file). I never like morning interviews because I really haven't been able to get a feel for the school by that early in the day. I didn't hear anyone complain about a difficult/unfair interview however, and I had great conversations with both of my interviewers. It felt casual and low stress. Tours were just 'okay' imo, but all the students and faculty that I met were very warm and welcoming.

I have 0.0% research experience though so I can't comment on your last question. From what I gathered on their philosophy, I felt that it wasn't very important to them.

I don't know if they'll assume you're being unproductive. I also think the couple-hundred-hours-or-so of volunteer/shadowing experiences take priority over a few months of training/learning at a new gig, even if it is meaningful to you. That's just the impression I get from the people I have spoken to here.

Very conversational. I gave a roughly 2-minute spiel on my research, was ready to be quizzed in depth, but was not. Both interviewers seemed more interested in my other community service/work experiences. My second interview ran late by a minute or two because we ended up talking about restaurants. If there's something about yourself that you really want to highlight to them, mention that with a lot of enthusiasm and give them a chance to ask follow-up questions.

I also felt tours were lackluster...partly because the M3s (orM4s, can't remember) were on a tight schedule so they squeezed in what they could for the hospital parts. The views from the patient rooms in the Rush hospital - so gorgeous, even on a cloudy day.

Has anybody been able to access the link sent in the acceptance email or the "offer tab" mentioned in the email?

To add to jabbed's comments, I would say that the interview day was perhaps the most organized of all schools I've interviewed at. They have people who bring you to and fro' the interviewer, and 2 tours (clinical and school). Everything runs on clockwork, with a very tight schedule jam packed with information about the school. The dean even came and spoke to us in depth about the school's mission and goals. The downside to such a tight schedule is that the interviewer (as in my case) may hurry you along during the interview trying to cover the pertinent topics so that they may present the necessary information to the committee, but in no way is this detrimental to your actual interview (I got accepted). The interviewers are a combination of practicing/semi-retired MD, PhD professors, and medical students. I wasn't quizzed on my research, but I was asked to explain in layman's terms the results and practical applications of my research. As everyone says, there are no gotcha moments and the interviewers are just trying to get an idea of what you're like as a person. Best of luck on your interviews!

no that website doesn't function when I try to follow the link.. however earlier today on our original application portal the "offer" tab showed up.. but I didn't fill it out and now it's gone... is anyones who's been accepted (but not filled it out) been removed either?

It started working for me today, and I was able to finish the entire process in order to accept the offer (agree to Technical Standards and Honors Code, and pay deposit).

The link doesn't work for me, but when I go back into the supplemental link I have an offer tab that is functional.

if accepted how long does one have to submit a decision and deposit?

Does anyone know if Rush accepts updates or letters of interest from applicants on the waitlist?

Unfortunately they do not accept update letters. I'm not sure about the LOI though.

Does anyone who has recently interviewed know if they're changing the next notification date to mid December? I interviewed 11/6 and they told us they're trying to move it earlier...

I interviewed after you and was told the same thing.

Anyone know if Rush is receptive to "in the area" emails? I'll be interviewing at Loyola February 20th and would like to group the interviews together if possible. Also, do you guys think Feb. 20th is still too far off to send the request?
