2013-2014 Rush Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know if Rush is receptive to "in the area" emails? I'll be interviewing at Loyola February 20th and would like to group the interviews together if possible. Also, do you guys think Feb. 20th is still too far off to send the request?
They do not consider them (as far as I know from the last two years, which probably has not changed... Sorry!)

Does anyone know if Rush accepts updates or letters of interest from applicants on the waitlist?
Only if they ask for it, which will be in ~May.

I think they requested LOI/updates/whatever two years ago, but were overfull last year and did not.

I interviewed after you and was told the same thing.

I interviewed on 11/13 and they said they were trying to get a notification out in mid December for certain interview dates, but they could not make any promises (i.e. could get a notification anywhere from mid December to January)

What was your interview like? Any tough questions, mostly conversational, in the morning? Interviewing in 8 days!

2 - 30 minute interviews, one open and one "closed" (just your PS and secondary I think). You can either have them at 930/1030/130. The 130 will be after the tour and lunch.

Very conversational and I feel like RMC schedules you with faculty involved in your specific interests (my friend who was a psych major got a psychiatrist). I didn't get any really tough questions, but I had a "how well can you think on your toes" kinda question about a topic completely unrelated to medicine.

I loved my Rush interview day experience and I'm hoping I'm one of the earlier interview dates that gets a mid December notification!

Good luck!

Did they confirm the mid-December notification date?

Both my interviews were very relaxed, I think that's a common theme. I had one at 1030am and one at 130pm. I did not get any tough questions really. The first interview introduced himself and gave a small bio and said tell me about yourself. Totally blanked on who I was for the longest 4-5 seconds ever haha, but it went fine. I wouldn't be nervous about interviewing at Rush. I was really only asked basic questions and asked to clarify aspects of my application. Toughest question for me was probably "tell me about a book you've read recently" because I've been reading textbooks recently and not real novels.

It was comforting to know that they interview about 425-450 people and accept ~225 I think, so a ~60% acceptance post-interview makes the interview day even more relaxed.

Did they confirm the mid-December notification date?

I don't think so I just read somewhere earlier on this thread that they're still trying to get a mid December date for some earlier interview dates. I went on 11/6 which was the first interview date for the Jan 7 notification day haha

Are lectures mandatory/posted online? Would any current students feel comfortable talking about how they study/volunteer/interact at Rush?

No/yes.

You will absolutely be able to talk about that at the interview. You have lunch with M2s.

Some are mandatory and some are not. Typically, lectures are not mandatory, but workshops and discussion groups are. Lectures are posted online--you can stream it after the live lecture is over.
Personally, I go to most lectures (unless I'm super tired and feel like I have a good grasp on the material after looking over it). Many of my friends like to sleep in and spend their nights streaming (whatever fits your sleep schedule, I guess).

It's super easy and highly encouraged to get involved in volunteer activities. There is a 10 hour/year volunteer requirement--you'll find it very easy to meet that minimum as there are volunteer activities available every week (clinical (free clinics, student run clinics, health fairs, etc.) and non-clinical (hanging out with kids in the hospital, birthday parties at a school for teenage mothers, etc.).

I'm not sure what you mean by interact?? I mostly see other M1's. Sometimes M2s, as they will hold tutoring sessions, go to bar nights, and generally be around the lecture halls. There are a lot of other students as Rush (grad, OT, PT, PA, nursing, etc.)--I see them at a lot of volunteer opportunities, but don't personally have much interaction with them.

As GraMaire said, at your interview, there will be tons of people available to answer your questions! Don't be afraid to ask away!

interview with UIC, Loyola, and NW, but no love from Rush :[??? is it the community service aspect? it truly is interesting how the admissions process runs...

(not complaining)

I wonder how far along Rush is in their interview process.

I wonder how far along Rush is in their interview process.

Last week when I interviewed, they said they were about halfway through both giving invites and accepting so lots of spots still! If you look at last year's thread, they were interviewing and accepting (albeit at a slower rate) all the way through March. Don't give up hope!

You've already interviewed so sorry I couldn't post beforehand but for anyone else that is contemplating interviewing here, do it. I was not expecting the day that I had at Rush and came away very, very impressed. I'm sure you all already know this but I had no idea how great of a place it is. I feel like they think they're the underdog in getting some of their applicants because they're a little less well known and they definitely act like it. They really recruit you and make you feel wanted. The students there all seem really pleased with their decision and they actively promote their school. Obviously, they all have their game faces on but I've interviewed elsewhere at other highly ranked schools and didn't get that feeling whatsoever. I can tell I would be really happy there if I got the opportunity.

Like everyone else has said in terms of the interview, 2 30 minute interviews and very easy going. One was definitely more rigid as the interviewer had a list of questions he wanted to ask me but everything was either off my experiences or my answers in the interview. No ethical questions or anything about my research or even the ACA (although I heard some people had this). The other interview was much more laid back and I was really unsure if he was testing me or something because he talked for the majority of it. Afterwards, I was thinking I might have missed something but can't overthink it at this point.

Seriously though, if you have the opportunity to interview at Rush but you're confident you'll be accepted elsewhere that you think you want to go, interview there anyways. Hopefully this anonymous post on a highly questionable website will sway you. If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask or PM me. Good luck guys

Does anyone know if they're definitely doing a mid-December notification?

Pretty sure they are doing one, I think sending them out Friday.

Any clue on why you think that? I don't want to get my hopes up about receiving a decision so I'm just assuming January.

When I interviewed early October, one tour was of the clinical facilities (Rush/Stroger), and one was of the Academic facilities (On my day, there were about 20 interviewees). As far as the interview schedule goes, I had mine back to back in almost first thing in the morning, but there were some that had one before and one after lunch.

Rush is doing an interesting process this year where the admissions committee is only sending out decisions on four specific dates. The first of these is this coming Friday (11/15), then 1/10, 3/14, and 4/11. So I'd assume that if you interview reasonably before one of those dates, the next one is when you'd hear a status update. It's actually kind of nice to not be preoccupied with racing to my computer everytime I hear a mail ding!

Hey in case you guys were wondering, I saw this post by goforbroke754. Idk how he knows but he sounds pretty confident and so far, accurate. Go in peace and let the anxiety return in January.

A possible December notification was alluded to at my interview.

Mine too (mid Nov). They said they'd try to let us know before Christmas break but they couldn't guarantee it. Hopefully we'll hear from them soon!! I LOVED Rush.

Interviewed on 11/13 and just received an email saying I was placed on the waitlist 🙁
I would assume others might be finding out soon.

Freaking out right now. Best of luck on the waitlist! I've heard that they keep a small list.

Rejected *sigh*.

Really disappointed, especially considering the high post-interview acceptance rates.

Anyone have info on this?

They do not accept updates pre-interview. Confirmed today with my classmate on adcom. Sorry!

And to answer presumptively, they do not accept LOIs from WLers until requested in April or May.

Acceptance email about 2-3 hrs ago! Interviewed 11/13. Really loved my interview day here and absolutely LOVE chicago. I would definitely be ecstatic to matriculate here! I was kind of surprised by this decision since my interviews were just okay. I had a pretty tough faculty interviewer who was really had to read. He also asked me a lot of questions about the ACA and health disparities in third world countries. I definitely think they consider your whole application since my experiences fit with their mission. Good luck to everyone else waiting!

Accepted via email a few minutes ago! Loved Rush and so happy to be matriculating here!

Interviewed 11/20

Does anyone have any more knowledge about the size of the waitlist or what percentage of the waitlist has been accepted in the past? I couldn't find any info about it.

Typically minimal to no movement off the WL.

M3s- <5 (none that my m3 friends know of)
M2s- <15 (my year had some decent movement)
M1s- <5 (only 1 I know of, and in late July or even August)

So this could be off if people dont say they were on the WL but its discussed at Second Look Day and like when people join the facebook group etc. People tend to be open about it as well.

If they want updates, they ask you in April for them.

Best of luck!

Nervous about interview day! Find out in a month :/

Does Rush do a second look, and if so when is it usually?

Accepted!
Interviewed 11/6
Complete 9/25

Probably gonna be going here, I loved everything about the school and it's right in the medical district of an awesome city!

Congrats!

I had an interview at Rush this past Wednesday (12/11), and I'm not sure that the school was even completely on my radar until that day. Not that I was entirely unaware of their reputation, but as someone from downstate Illinois there are definitely programs closer to me that are more familiar. However, I was completely blown away by my interview day. It was by far the most student-centered interview day I have been a part of thus far. The president and CEO of the school spoke to my interview group as did the dean and several faculty members and students. It meant a lot to me that they were so interested not only in their students, but in their prospective students that their higher ups actually took the time to come and visit with us. The interviews were very laid back and comfortable, and the interviewers themselves were engaging and made the experience mostly stress-free. I was impressed with the facilities as well as the amazing duality between the Rush Medical Center and Stroger. I really hope to be accepted, as this may be my new top choice after the interview day experience.

Felt the exact same way!

Accepted 12/13
Interviewed 11/6

Excited! I'm waiting on other schools, but am 99% certain I'll be choosing Rush. Awesome people, good curriculum, incredible rotation opportunities at Rush and Stroger, and right in the heart of Chicago 🙂

Anyone know if there's a class of 2018 thread yet?

FYI: the dean came directly from one of our student group meetings to go talk to you all at your interview day. Just wanted to mention it, since it's such a good representation of Rush culture. The higher-ups DO care!

I can't wait to meet you all this summer!
