2013-2014 The Commonwealth Medical College

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted all that stuff about a month ago and haven't heard anything yet. I'm kind of hoping they send an email just confirming the aid...I definitely don't want to find out about any issues when I get on campus haha

deadhead2, thanks for the response -- sounds like a decent schedule, or as decent as it can get for med school.

Also, has anyone received any emails or paperwork from the financial aid offices after completing the entrance counseling and MPN stuff for the loans?

Quick question. Found a place .90 miles from the school that all utilities included (Gas, Heat, Water, Sewer, Trash) except electricity. It is partially furnished as well. This is for $800/mo. Do you guys recommend this?

The pro's i see are that it is close to the school, partially furnished, and heat is included (which can be $100+/mo at times.

The con's I see are the price!

What do you all think? Thank you so much.

That is actually a pretty decent price. I'm from the area and Scranton housing can range quite a bit depending on the type of place you look at. It's also a really big college area so there's a lot of options out there.

Just a side note, if heating is included, I'd jump on it. Winters get pretty brutal here and that is a major cost saver.

One of the recent emails mentioned something about a dress code policy that will be discussed during orientation. Does anybody know what the dress code is during pre-clinical classes?

you can wear whatever you want during lectures...but when patients come for clinical presentations, you need to be in dress clothes + white caot

Hey everyone! I'm an M3 at TCMC. I just wanted to drop in to say congrats to everyone who has been accepted and see if anyone had any questions I can answer. I know I had a lot of questions before I started especially since I was coming from out of state. So if you have anything I can help with such as textbooks, housing, what to expect, what it's like to live in Scranton, the LIC, anything really just let me know. You can post here or contact me directly! I'll be very honest with my answers too!

Also for anyone who doesn't know yet, TCMC has received full accreditation from LCME and Middle States! 😀 Here's an article about it: http://theabingtonjournal.com/news/...alth-Medical-College-earns-full-accreditation

Quick question for current students...

Are exams taken on the school-issued laptops? According to previous year's threads on SDN, the answer to that is yes. However, I asked a rising 2nd year and was told that the exams are paper-based not computerized. I thought the whole point of the school-issued laptops was that they contained exam-taking software. 😕 Was the switch from computer-based exams to paper-based exams a recent change? Cause previous year's threads all make it very clear that you have to bring in your TCMC-issued laptop to take exams. Any clarification would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Not a current student, but I was assuming that the laptop was required for the board prep exams and not for individual classes. I could be wrong, though, because I really have no idea.

Hi 🙂
Do you know where I can find a list of all the textbooks we need and if you could share which ones you really do need and which you don't.
Thanks!

Here is the link to the textbooks: http://tcmedc.libguides.com/content.php?pid=156097&sid=1537133
Let me know if you need a login in for it, and I will find another way to send the list.

I didn't use any books for CMBL (your first science block), PCM, or PAS. For HSF (Human Structure and Function) I used Netter's atlas, Gray's Anatomy for Students (you can also use Clinically Oriented Anatomy. I would look at them in the library and see which one you like best. Both are good), and BRS Physiology. I also used Netter's flashcards. Closer to Neuro you will get an email about Pathoma. Get it. You will love it! For Neuro, I thought Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple was helpful. A lot of people also got Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple as well and thought it was very helpful. Most of the test material will be pulled from the lectures. I just used the books to help clarify things.

Regular exams are taken on paper. The only exams I took on my school laptop were Step 1 practice exams. I don't think you needed to take them on that laptop specifically. I just did. I don't know if regular block exams were ever taken on the laptops. I really don't know why they give us laptops at all.

I hope that helps!

Last year they prepared to trial computer based exams in the master's program but they ran into a technical issue between the software and the computers the school owns. Before the trial didn't work out, they had said the plan was that the first year MD and master's program would use computer tests this year. I think it's safe to assume that they still intend to make the switch.
