2013 - 2014 University at Buffalo (SUNY) Wait List Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just withdrew my position on this WL. Good luck to all still waiting

History isn't going to change this year as compared to year's past. We just have to have faith that we are in the top or middle tier of the wait list and we will have a pretty good shot IMO. UB interviews around ~ 600...assuming they are making the wait list a little smaller like they said (essentially rejecting those in the bottom tier of the waitlist in year's past), it will leave the rest of the list with a pretty good chance.

This whole not telling us our ranking thing/where we stand is frustrating to us applicants, BUT I believe this could be the best thing for UB and the class in general. Students who really love the school and who are dedicated to attending no matter what will stay on the waitlist despite not knowing their position and those who have acceptances elsewhere/who aren't willing to wait around will withdraw. This way, UB gets the students who really want to be there!

In all the past years they had already started taking people off the waitlist before now, so hopefully this week it begins!

I'm wondering if the snow storms that Buffalo had this year (two of them were mid week) resulted in many late/postponed interviews. I know that the throughway was closed for a few days during one of the interview weeks. Could be a reason for the lack of reported movement. But ya, one would think there would be some movement soon.

Getting really excited and hopeful for some action on the wait list in the next couple weeks. Here's to hoping we all get accepted!

So I believe Buffalo is done with interviewing now. Hopefully this means they will let us know where we are on the wait list and possibly start taking some of us off it!

Based on previous years, it looks like the movement may begin today. I believe I read in last year's thread that Mr. Rosso told an applicant that the online portal updates take place at 5PM on Thursdays.

Fingers crossed for all of us! If you see the magical "ACCEPT," don't forget to let us know that movement has started - after you celebrate, of course 🙂

I assume acceptances come in waves? I wish they'd just tell us where we are on the list

Has anyone asked if they will release our personal scores now that all interviews are over and done with?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but does anyone have any idea how big the actual waitlist is?

However big it is, it sounds like they are going to cut it down by rejecting the bottom part. This is ultimately better for those who are on the bottom third so that at least you would know instead of wondering and guessing up through july.

Mr. Rosso just sent out an email that says they will not be breaking the wait list into thirds but that it is ranked and add mission are rolling depending on how many seats become available. Hopefully this means that the wait list is small and they expect to accept us all!

Hi guys -

I just received this email. Hopefully I'm wrong, but by the phrase "we have filled our 2014 Freshman Medical Class," it seems to indicate that they aren't taking people from the waitlist??

"Dear UB Medical Candidate,

The Admissions Committee has finished its interviewing, and we have filled our 2014 Freshman Medical Class.

Our Wait List is a ranked list, and as an opening occurs during the Spring and Summer, we will immediately accept the next highest ranked candidate off the Wait List. This "Rolling" process will continue until Monday, August 11th - which is our first day of Freshman orientation.

At this time, Dr. Severin has decided not to break the Wait List into "thirds". If he changes his mind in the weeks ahead, the "applicant status check" on our internet site would automatically reflect this change.

If you are accepted to another Medical School and no longer wish to remain on our Wait List, it would be courteous to advise us as soon as possible.

I appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter"

Hey everyone! I had the same moment of panic - "oh no, is this the wait list cut email?!"

The "we have filled our class" sounds scary, but I believe this is pretty standard (that schools must offer the same number acceptances as seats available by a certain date). I've also read elsewhere that at least some movement happens at every school, so it's likely people will drop off as they're accepted to higher choices/in-state schools/etc. However, I would think that at least some have responded "no" to UB's initial offer, especially if they had been offered acceptance elsewhere beforehand, so I'm surprised to see that the list hasn't budged at all -- at least for any of us posting on SDN!

In the past, it seems like wait list acceptances initially took place on Thursdays. Maybe tomorrow is the big day?

Wtf? Are they not accepting a lot of people off the waitlist this year?

Same email. Looking at past threads, it seems to be standard. Lets hope this is what initiates the movement. Good luck all!

Considering we all got this, I think we shouldn't panic. I don't like the word choice in that email hah ...

Ya, I was told by Dean S. that by the end of interviewing season they would have offered a spot for each seat and that they don't over-accept (hence "filled our class"). I could be wrong, but I assume within a week or two we will see some movement. Besides not reporting the rank tiers, I expect near-normal movement.

I think you're onto something. Let's hope for the best

EDIT: you know what? today was probably the last day the committee met to offer outright acceptances. so now, I'd assume (this is a gut feeling, nothing more) there'll be some waitlist acceptances every week until every seat is spoken for.

I wouldn't freak out about that wording. They are simply saying that now that the interviews are over they have a full class. Buffalo usually goes through a full cycle of the wait list, as in one entire class worth of students, because they aren't a super popular school and they are a state school. We have to wait till May 15th when everyone holding multiple acceptances drops their spot at Buffalo. I imagine around then there will be a lot of movement.

On my interview day they said last year when they split the list into thirds that they had dipped into the bottom tier for acceptances and that this was pretty standard so you've gotta figure at least 2/3 of the wait list will get accepted

I hope that odds are really that good. But on the other hand, if the odds are that good and I don't get off the waitlist, I'll be really kicking myself for it.

Guess we'll have to be patient. Good luck all!

Hey all! Do we know how many total candidates are wait listed? Is that information released?

They won't release that information, guess would be 300 people or less. 2/3 or more of wait list in past years has eventually been accepted.

I also received the WL email yesterday and def throw off by the wording.

No worries. Seems like a standard procedure, let us hope that movement starts soon!

Ok and I remember something about reducing the size of the wait list. Thus people on the list should have more then a 2/3 chance of being accepted. Then again none of us can confirm these assumptions. Best of luck everyone.

Yeah they said that during my interview as well. No idea as to how they will be doing that. In past years it seemed that the wait list already had started moving and they would get to the "middle third" of the wait list by end of May or so. This year, they seem to be changing policy, so not quite sure what to expect. Let us hope that it will be similar to past years. The closer we get to May 15th, the more optimistic I seem to be.

Interviewed last Wednesday (last day of interviews for 2014 class) and got wait-listed today as well. Same info - smaller wait-list expected this year, and it is likely that a huge portion of the wait-list will (hopefully) be offered spots. I will say that I know and have spoken to quite a few medical students at UB and there is a only small percentage of the actual matriculating class that was offered acceptances fresh off an interview. Additionally, it is likely that many of those who got wait-listed have already been accepted at other schools, regardless of if they have withdrawn themselves from the wait-list or not. As this is likely my only shot of starting school in the fall, I am choosing to remain optimistic. I wish the best of luck to everyone else in my position and to all other applicants.

Mr. Rosso said that the waitlist is supposed to start moving today. Lets hope for some acceptances!

I assume no one from SDN got the news today.

When are they going to start cutting the bottom of the wait list? I think someone mentioned this earlier that they were going to do that.

If they actually did, I'd guess it would've been done already via post interview rejections

I don't think they were literally going to reject off the bottom once they were already waitlisted. I believe they meant cut the bottom of the list as compared to years past. Meaning just waitlist fewer people.
