2013-2014 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been final pooled as well! At least we aren't out of the running yet : )

I suppose it is less stellar than an acceptance, but worse things could have happened...I don't think we should worry too much until March rolls around.

Is everyone who is not accepted just put into the final pool??

ACCEPTED!!!! WOOoo and a 10k scholarship, I can't believe this! I literally cried when I.............jk I was final pooled as well 🙂

I already knew I was final pooled at the interview (Jan 15) and yet I still freaked out when I got that vague status email, just to see that they final pooled me. Thanks for the faux heart attack Iowa!

I am also joining the final pool party, which was expected. At my interview (mid January) they told us that the rolling portion of the admissions process was already complete and that everyone to interview from our date forward would be automatically considered in the final pool.

I could have done without the anxiety triggered by the body text "the admissions committee has made a decision on your application" I have had like 4 rejection e-mails begin with that same sentence.

Just talked with admissions, and basically everyone who interviews gets the final pool if not accepted in rolling. For the most part everyone in the final pool hasnt even been reviewed by the committee, but the subcommittee didnt like them enough to move them forward. They said that there are still ongoing interviews which obviously go right into the final pool.

I really hate this committee/subcommittee stuff

so you're saying the sub committee didn't like us enough to have the committee accept us And the committee most likely hasn't looked at our app at all ?

Anyone else interviewing 1/29? I guess our best hope is to get final pooled huh?

I interviewed yesterday and they said that the rolling portion of the cycle is over and everyone goes into the final pool now. Also, we were told that 60% of outright acceptances had been given for in-state students and about 50% for out-of-state students.

The rest will come from the final pool?

Yes, the rest of the outright acceptances will come in the final pool decisions. Then I imagine there will acceptances off of the wait list throughout the spring.

I talked to a guy who got an acceptance a while ago and said he was going to go somewhere else. Woohoo one more spot available...

Interviewing tomorrow! Nervous, but excited. Definitely gotta get used to this weather if I end up getting in and coming here haha (I'm from So-Cal).

If you want any recommendations on food or things to do let me know and I'll give you a few suggestions 😀 I've lived in Iowa City for over 4 years.

Did anybody write a LOI with one of their update paragraphs post interview?

I had written a long update letter to Iowa completely forgetting about the 1500 character limit. Almost considered splitting it onto thirds but managed to edit it down. I hope its good.

I have to say that I'm very impressed by the updates that they are sending about pre-M1 research, the 6 week orientation, etc. I did not even know these options existed.

I thought about it, but knew as genuine as it might actually be for me, it likely would have came off as desperate.

I used 2000 characters for updates and 1000 for a LOI (split between the two "additional" sections I had left) - The LOI was short, but allowed me to make my point and the add com is probably tired of reading long essays.

I added a quick paragraph at the end of my update to thank the adcom for hosting the interview and I was impressed by the curriculum and the facilities and blah blah blah...

Iowa has risen to my top choice, so I wrote an LOI type paragraph while trying not to sound needy.

We will see if it works.

Only a month and a half of waiting now:xf:

I thought that the additional info space was only for updates? If I had known we could write a LOI, I would have done that! Does Iowa accept LOIs at all? Or anything submitted outside of the secondary app, like another LOR?

They told me nothing was after the 31.

I called and specifically asked if you could write a LOI in there.... They said it wasn't really designed for that, but you could write one if you wanted. So I'm thinking it wouldn't make a huge difference either way.

I sent a letter last year while hanging out in the pool just explaining what I liked about iowa and what I had been up to. Essentially just an iowa love letter that I sent in to someone in admissions (can't remember who though).

Good luck to all those in the pool!

Dear carver please call us sometime let us know our status and pick me!!

Hey guys! I'm a current M1 at Carver and was thinking back to how anxious I was last year around this time so I wanted to post on here just to give you an idea of how things worked last year. I know I was totally confused, so this might help some of you!

I interviewed in November and was final pooled mid-January. I believe everyone that interviews after a certain point gets final pooled-- I know they hadn't even reviewed my application during the rolling process. After getting final pooled, I received an e-mail on March 13th saying I was accepted (this was just the week before Iowa's spring break)-- I think acceptances usually roll out that week, and if accepted, you will likely get an e-mail that day followed by a packet of information in the mail (March 13th was a Wednesday, and I got my packet on Saturday). If you're wait-listed or rejected, you just get the letter in the mail.

March 13th happened to be a Wednesday last year, but I think it can happen anytime during that week or the week before-- I think it's typically the week before spring break though.

Hope this helps ease some of your stress about not knowing when to expect to hear back! Good luck!

Don't think anyone has heard anything since final pools. I don't think we will hear anything up until next Friday, according to last year as they heard at the deadline date
