2013-2014 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

Oh god I'm in class for the next 3 hours. I'm waiting till the end of class to check to see. Did people with the waitlist get a number on where you are at?

Waitlisted via secondary page change. Was given a number in top 50 -- oos.

OOS, just checked my admissions decision. I have a top 5 alternate spot--can I be celebrating a pretty much guaranteed acceptance? Or is there no movement some years?

Congrats to you all accepted! I loved this school!

Waitlisted at #52 jeez. Sounds like a probably rejected but will find out in like July. Anyone have any info on waitlist movement from prior years?

Rejected OOS, I knew I didn't want to look. 🙁

Congrats to everyone accepted!

For those that didn't get good news today, hopefully you've got other options. If it's lookin like you'll have to reapply, never give up. I know how you're feeling. I'm a reapplicant & had to work hard on things to get in this time around.

if someone could compile a list of the years and how far the waitlist has moved for oos they would be my hero

does anyone know if Iowa has a second look weekend and/or facebook group for the class of 2018?

What type of email did people with acceptances, waitlist receive - I haven't gotten one yet - did it simply say "go to secondary page and check?"

I'm waitlisted but in the top 20 for out of state candidates. What do you think my chances are? Will they take a status update at this point?

Yes essentially -- I got the email about 4 hours after I had already checked to see my status. Yours might be up already.

OOS here too. Do you want an Internet hug?

I could use one considering I've struck out on interviews so far.

Sorry to hear that 🙁

*sends Internet hug*

hope those of us that were rejected have good news elsewhere. 🙂

OOS and rejected as well. Best of luck everyone else

Alas waitlisted as well. So far all of my out of state interviews have turned into waitlist spots... I'm officially depressed. 🙁

For people accepted today... Did you guys get a background check email? It said instantly, but I haven't gotten one...

You're not alone. I haven't gotten one either

I know that last year's OOS waitlist moved at least 31 spots. Does anyone know how many spots it ended up moving by the end?

Does anyone know how many IS waiters were offered a spot last year?

Does anybody know if they offer any sort of exit interview/comments for those that didn't make it?

Yes they do. You can call and schedule a time to either meet in person or do it on the phone. I think the earliest they'll schedule is after spring break.

Basically they'll spend ~15-30 mins going over your file. Telling you the good and bad. Then they'll make some suggestions on what you can do to improve. Pretty sure they note if you do this meeting/make an effort to do what they recommended, so they can compare it to your reapplication.

Highly recommend, I got specific feedback last year... My meeting was with the admissions director. Took their advice & was accepted this year.

We do have a revisit weekend here at Carver. "Get Acquainted Day" is usually mid April (like 2nd week if I recall) and it is a blast. It sealed my decision to come to Carver and I recommend coming if you are on the fence or if you just want to get another look at the school and so of your potential future classmates 🙂. They really pull out the red carpet for all of you!

Facebook groups are usually made by your class so hunt around or start one!

Welcome to Carver to all those newly admitted! And for those who are on wait list don't lose hope! The lists moves so keep the faith. I know a few classmates on wait list who were eventually accepted.

For those OOS who are concerned with COA financial aid is usually very good here (from my own experience hehe of course and my friends/classmates). Awards will vary but generally most people receive some aid.

If anyone else has questions feel free to ask here or PM me. Spring break starts next week so I'll have some more free time to answer questions.

Congrats to all the new acceptances!!! I definitely want to second what my classmate JCaptain said about second look day. Went to a couple and Iowa was my favorite by far. Everything was great, but the faculty were what blew me away and still manage to impress me in different ways a year later. They are truly the best. For financial aid, I have friends tell my they have received scholarships later in the cycle due to people giving up their spot/$$$, so if your package isn't what you wanted don't be too disappointed. Can't comment with specifics about OOS scholarship preference but the financial aid is great her.

We are on spring break next week (woot!) so feel free to PM with any questions

I got bored at work and made a FB group! Just search for University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Class of 2018. The class of 2015 was closed so I made 2018 closed, too.

I'm having trouble finding it, could you please post a link?

Hi everyone, I'm a current M1 at CCOM and can confirm that the financial aid people tend to be kind to OOS applicants, so don't let the sticker shock scare you away if you are OOS and like the school. I got in off the wait list in June and one of the major factors in my decision to come here at the last minute over my other options was the financial aid. They specifically reserve some of the funding for those who are accepted later, and money that was previously awarded early in the cycle gets returned to the pot when applicants withdraw. If there is leftover funding when the final class is set in the fall, they may also raise your award slightly (I got a small bonus for the spring semester which made me unreasonably giddy for a whole day).

Does anyone have any thoughts on the new curriculum? I'm not sure how I feel about being a guinea pig, especially with having boards in the winter...

Anyone know if OOS'ers can eventually qualify for IS tuition as a student at U Iowa?

You'd have to take a year off and do research or something in Iowa.

This is correct. You'll have to live in Iowa for a year outside of being a student. This can be accomplished by deferring and working in Iowa for a year....or just living here for a year prior to your matriculation.

Or

You could marry an Iowan 😉

For those alarmed at the OOS COA, wait for financial aid awards. CCOM can be very generous...

A Guinean pig in some sense of the words. Technically my class is the Guinean pig for 2 of the 3 strands...so you're welcome lol.

Rest assured that faculty and staff have put a lot of time into this curriculum and they are heavily invested. Feedback is a very important part of education here at CCOM. They ask for/we give back a lot of feedback....and I mean a lot.

As far as step 1 I wouldn't worry too much at this point. A year of clinicals before taking it will help a lot. You'll will be given ample time to do well on it. It's too important a test for CCOM to not ahead properly for.

Has anyone who was accepted from the final pool gotten their acceptance packet in the mail yet?
