2013-2014 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any other MD/PhD applicants here? I've been complete since 10/7 and haven't heard anything back. Anyone else in the same boat?

II 11/23/2013. Apparently they send out emails on saturday.... OOS applicant! WOO. The only dates left were in February/March 🙁. This is going to be one cold interview (I'm from southern CA....)

Just got an email saying my application is on hold and will be reviewed at a later date. Is this a sort of silent rejection? I was planning on sending in an update letter saying things I've been up to recently/restating my interest... is it worth it now?

Read above... many of us got this email, and apparently some of the people who got it did end up getting invites later. So send an update!

I just checked the UMD online applicant portal and noticed that my status changed from, "INTERVIEW- not scheduled" to "Under Review." Was this a good omen for anyone or still on the fence? Fingers crossed! I'm IS and UMD is my dream school!

I think they switched everyone over to "under review" because the "not scheduled" status misled applicants and the admissions office was getting too many calls from people thinking they had to schedule their interview lol. I've had the "under review" for a while and recently got placed on a pre-interview hold. GL to you!

I just noticed mine also changed in this same way. Not sure what it means.

Again, we all got this status change (well, besides the people who actually did get interviews). It doesn't mean anything!

hey peeps...
I want to send an LOI but can't seem to find a way to do so through the portal. Did you guys mail it in? Thanks for your help!

Just send it to the admissions email. I believe they have that address all over their website so it's pretty easy to find!

II today! OOS, complete mid-October. Only available dates were in March

MARCH!!!!!! Holy Jeebus!!!!! Congratulations on the invite! Very exciting. Did you receive a pre-interview hold status beforehand?

I'm not sure how they release their dates, maybe earlier dates will be available for other applicants. December 11 was briefly available, but when I logged back on it was gone. I didn't check my status all that often, but to my knowledge it was never a hold. Good luck with your cycle!

As far as I know, the pre-interview holds went out by e-mail (sorry I said status, that was misleading). Means you didn't get one, you just went straight to II. Thanks for the well wishes...same to you! Enjoy your interview!!

Anyone who interviewed heard back recently?

How recently are you looking for? I heard back 2 weeks ago (guess it's not that recently).. but it was like exactly 4 weeks after my interview.
Someone posted on Friday that they had heard back though.

I haven't heard back and I am coming up on 7 weeks...

No news is good news. You'll probably have longer to wait, too, with the holidays coming up at all...Godspeed to us all!

Edit--sorry, didn't realize you were answering another person's question. The 2nd part of my post still holds true, though. GL to ya 🙂

I am coming up 5 weeks post-interview. Hopefully next week will bring news.

I'm at 3 weeks post-interview and haven't heard anything. Not sure if there's different response times for IS vs. OOS.

I have a feeling my Christmas will be really happy or not-so happy.

hang in there! I think I read somewhere 4-6 weeks, but I heard literally 4 weeks to the day. Hopefully next week will bring you good news!

For any current students,

Have any of you heard about or taken the Medical Spanish Course? How much work does it entail and what level of Spanish is required? Also, is the added workload doable along with the medical curriculum?

Not a current student, but one of the first years had mentioned to me at the interview lunch that she was taking it and I think she said it only met once a week. She said that they learned vocab and practiced clinical scenarios in Spanish, so maybe you would need to have some background to take the class.

Here is a link for more info: http://medschool.umaryland.edu/osa/med_spanish.asp

If I matriculate, I would definitely enroll in this class!

In addition to what Chelonia said - a student I talked to said that this past year they had to take a test to get into the class, so it seemed like some level of Spanish was required (but i'm not sure how much). Also, it seemed that in the past it was easier to get into the class, but this year space was limited.

II today. Complete mid-august. OOS. But I withdrew so hope someone gets my spot. Available dates were in february and late march

Good to know we're in the same boat. Hopefully by x-mas we'll have heard something.

Interviewed the week after you, also in the same situation. My guess is that the Thanksgiving holiday created a delay, so I would hope that we all get some good news before the winter break.

congrats…wonder if they're done with IS interview invites
IS applicant here. Complete early September and didn't receive an II until mid November, so I think you still have a chance!

I applied to the MD/MS combined program here - hoping to hear some news soon.

I remember reading somewhere that those who apply to MD/MS combined program are reviewed by a different committee? Is that correct?

same, interviewed nov. 6th and haven't heard anything yet! good to know I'm not alone

I interviewed in middle-late October and still haven't heard... and others from my day heard over 2 weeks ago. I am thinking of calling early next week if I haven't heard. Thoughts?

has it been 6 weeks for you?

I would say it's ok to call at that point. Just make sure you contact admissions rather than your interviewers.
I had a friend who heard back in week 7 and got accepted. I heard back in three. I think it really depends. I don't know what calling is going to accomplish for you? I would be worried you might be bothering them but thats about it. I'm not sure really what impact it would have.

Waitlisted. Interview was the week of 10/31. IS. I really loved the school and I thought my interview went really well. I was really sad when I heard. Does anybody know what their waitlist movement is like?

This was snail mail? Condolences on the waitlist, I have a few myself :-/

Yeah, I wished they would have sent it earlier. It really stung especially because I really liked it, and they didn't give much information on the process either and I am just trying to be hopeful about it.

Unfortunately, I don't think they had any waitlist movement last year. Not sure how this year will be like though.
