2013-2014 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not a student, but I have read tons of posts on this topic. Seems to me like there are 2 important things:

1. Every school ranks their students so that they have a way to present students in deans letters to residencies (except a handful, and this is being phased out supposedly), so either way you are going to have a rank. The only difference between p/f and a/b/c/d is that you will have a letter grade assigned to it. You are still 'competing' for your spot on the ranking list
2. If you are a person who would be stressed if they saw a C or B rather than a Pass (even if the grade is a 75 or 80), maybe it isn't for you. But if it's the only thing holding you back, I heard you get over it quickly anyways.

General consensus is that every single school will tell you that their students are non-competitive and very collegial and blah blah. Of course there are always the few that aren't.

Hope that helps
I agree. But UMD is the only school that I've interviewed/applied to where it has a letter grading system. Why can't it just change to H/HP/P/F or some variation of that? It would create a less competitive atmosphere, at least on the outside.

H/HP/P/F is the same as A/B/C/D

see the similarity?

Yea I know, but what I meant was why can't it just change it to H/HP/P/F or H/P/F or P/F. A/B/C/D just sounds intimidating and from the outside looking in, it makes you feel like the school is very competitive, where that may not be the case actually.

Yea I agree it does sound better to have HPF or some variation than letter grades. Nothing we can do to change it unfortunately haha

Does anyone-maybe current students-know when second look weekend will be this year? Thanks!

anyone know if there's going to be a facebook page opening up soon for the class of 2018? the page for the class of 2017 was created around this time last year... but I don't know who started it (admin or student).

I'm interviewing here next week after getting put on hold. My stats aren't the best, but I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on the interview? Is it more ethical?

Congrats! I'm not able to comment on your interview question- I would recommend looking at SDN interview feedback though, that might help! When were you extended the interview? I'm on the pre-interview hold patiently waiting and hoping for an II myself.

I was granted the interview last week and put on hold in November! But I also sent an update letter! Yeah, there is no feedback from this cycle or recent it seems! Such a bummer!

Hold in November here, too. I sent an update letter shortly after. Hope you rock your interview, GL!

Good luck on your interview! I interviewed here last week, and my stats aren't the best either. There are 2 one hour interviews, and both of mine were actually very conversational. One of my interviews actually lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The questions I was asked were all related to my application, but to be honest UMB has so many faculty members that interview applicants that you may have a very different experience. Everyone seemed to have a very positive experience though, so I'm sure you'll have a great time =) Let me know if you have any additional questions, and best of luck!

I second everything RoundEyes said-- both the interviews were really conversational for me, and I really enjoyed them both! I had one student (about an hour) and one PhD faculty (a little over an hour, and I actually ended it because one of his students had been waiting to talk to him since the start of the interview and I felt kinda bad... though thinking back on it I shouldn't have worried about that...). I don't remember either of them asking me any ethical questions. The PhD faculty member actually started off the interview by saying he was going to ask me some ethical questions such as blah, blah and other questions on how I would handle such and such situation later in the interview... but we ended up getting so caught up joking about his experiences in Baltimore that I guess he forgot! So I guess my advice is just to relax and enjoy yourself! Best of luck next week!!

At this point, can I assume a pre-interview hold is a silent rejection?

Wait listed. Super bummed since this was my first choice

Is UMD receptive to letters of intent (pre or post interview) and additional letters of recommendation?

Any other pre-interview holds from late Nov/early Dec get IIs yet?

I was put on hold 12/5 and am really hoping for that II!

Yes and yes! I've sent an additional letter and pre-interview update, both of which were received by the Office of Admissions. IDK how much of an effect they will have, but it certainly can't hurt!

Any advice on Post-Interview LOIs? Given that I interviewed back on 1/13, is it more prudent to wait until I get a decision and hold on to my cards in case I get waitlisted?

Hey guys! I will be attending here next semester, yay!

Has anyone heard anything about financial aid stuff from here yet? I already submitted my FAFSA but is there anything else we need to do?

Thanks!

what email should i send pre-interview updates to ?
thanks!

They interview until March 31st according to their website (on Monday and Wednesday).

Has anyone who interviewed in January heard back yet?

Do you remember how long they said it would take to send us a decision?

When I asked they said it generally takes anywhere between 4-8 weeks, but they aim for 4-6. They also said the adcom meets on Mondays.

No they were open. I just received a phone call saying I was accepted!!! So excited!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Congratulations! That's amazing!!! Did you interview recently or it's been about the 4-6 weeks they tell you?!

did anyone call a day before their interview to see whether you had a morning or afternoon interview? if so, can you come in later if you have no interviews at 9?

I had a Monday interview. I was called the Friday before and was told I had afternoon interviews. They tell you you can come in at 10:30 if your interviews are in the afternoon.

Best of luck!!

Thanks! Also how much walking was there to get to each interview?

My interviews weren't too far apart, maybe like a block away?... it was a little hard to tell at first since my tour ended on the other side of campus, haha. I would definitely wear comfortable shoes though since there's a good amount of walking during the tour.

The interview day in general is really laidback. Since I had afternoon interviews, I checked in at 10:30, which was followed by the introduction, financial aid presentation, luncheon with med students and tour. The tour groups were split based off of who had morning interviews and afternoon interviews, and my tour guide walked us to our first interview locations. Regarding the interviews, my interviewers had definitely reviewed my application thoroughly, and a majority of the questions I was asked were about my activities and experiences. I had a faculty interviewer and a student interviewer, but both were so friendly and all in all I had a really positive experience interviewing 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions!
